1/144 F-14 Tomcat

Post by JP23 »

I bought this kit (my first) when buying kits for my husband a few years ago. I chose this one because I was a big fan of J.A.G at the time and was inspired by the groupbuild to finally get it out of the box (much to my husbands delight)

This is the kit, the snips I used and the overly stinky glue. I ended up borrowing my husbands snips as I found these a little clumsy to cut out with

This picture below is why I have always been afraid to do kits, my brain shuts down! Thankfully I had an experienced modeller on hand who was able to help me translate it as I struggled when one picture contained multiple instructions.

I found this bit really challenging as the wings kept falling off. I needed a helpfull assistants finger to hold them in place while I used the stinky glue

The wings move so I must have done it right.

Swift progress there, don't forget to put weight in the nose if you want it to sit on its wheels propperly.

The wheels looked complex so I decided to go with it flying, thats how I am used to seeing it. but there are no pilots. My husband suggested making some out of the spare frame from the kit.

I tried to make it look like the pilot had a head
The last bits left to stick on is the missiles on the bottom but the instructions are not very clear so I guessed where they should go, I hope I got it right

The missiles look fine to me, and that is an inspired pilot you made.

Because the groupbuild ends tomorrow I have been trying to finish my model.

I enlisted some help and advice for the really complex parts.

I have painted and glued the pilot (I'll call him Harmon) and his GIB into the model

And was shown how to use masking tape to cover the glass so it does not get paint on it

I have borrowed some grey paint that looks about the right shade and painted the whole model
IMG_3121.jpg
I was then advised to paint it with humbrol clear gloss varnish. I did this and then painted all the little bits like the missiles and the nose as the instructions say. The instructions are tiny though so I'm not entirely sure it is right.

Tonight I have been shown how to do a wash using VERY smelly white spirit and some oil paint.

I will post some pictures tomorrow when it is dry.

What time does the groupbuild end tomorrow

Wow! You've made some fast progress on this, looks great. I'm impressed with your pilots, I'm too lazy for that and would've just sprayed the canopy with tamiya smoke!

Thank you but I do not think it will be finished in time as I have been told that the build looks like it ends at 6pm and not midnight as we thought.
