Trumpeter 1/48 Vampire FB.5 w some Eduard PE (as SwAF J-28B)

Ok guys, finally got the time to start this build thread.
This is my 3rd kit since I started modelling again in November 2013 after +30 years...
The addiction is back and I curse myself for not taking up this hobby, which I love so much, earlier.
Modelling now is like being in paradise compared to the 70-ties and 80-ties, and I feel like a big kid in an endless candy store!

This kit is quite new and a very welcome addition for all Swedes since the FB.5 version or Mk50 as it was called in export version was bought by Sweden and became the J28 B. The Swedish Airforce (SwAF) had 310 J28B in total.

If You wonder about SwAF designations:
J=Jakt=Fighter/Interceptor, B=Bomber, A=Attack, S=Spaning=Reconnaissance

The kit is pretty standard with about 50 parts. But its ok deatailed and panel lines are nice and in scale.
It was well packaged and a big + is that the clear parts were well protected in foam. (Which should be standard if you ask me)
The clear parts are ok in thickness and very clear and nice.
To spice it up I got the Eduard PE set which contains cockpit and fuse detailing. I will also do some standard scratchbuilding.
Swedish decals are from RB Studio and they seem to be of good quality, have only Heard good things about them.
I will do the "Gul Filip" = "Yellow Filip" from the F10 wing in Ängelholm in the South of Sweden, one of my two home bases which I grew up with. Sadly both are now decommissioned as is most of the Swedish military.

Eduard PE

I will not use all of the PE for the fuse, cockpit yes and then some bits to spice up the fuse.
If anyone wonders, I am NOT a rivet counter! I just want it to look good, or You know...if I build an X, Im ok as long as it looks like an X. It dont need to be correct and exact in every detail. No time for that, to many models to build!!!

(Of course I try to correct obvious and major incorrections if there are any and its not to much trouble...)

Will try to do a recap up to were I am now.
Right then...

Started with building the internal parts, including this one (pic below). Must say, Trumpeter has done a very strange design here.
This is a combination part, front Wheel well and part of cockpit floor and detail. Problem is, its open. Now...a pilot flying this plane would freeze his nuts off!

Naa I want a realistic closed cockpit floor and sealed Wheel well so had to scratch build and Close it.

Other than that its a straight forward and easy build havent encountered anything else so far.
Internals ready for priming, what they look like OOB. (-a detail on the cockpit wall on the left, removed for PE)

I use Vallejo primer, thinned for easy spraying.

Done! The Vallejo primer gives a really nice Surface to work with. Brings out the details very good. (which is good and bad, any imperfections will stand out!)

Exhaust in Metalizer, thought dark iron would be nice for a worn and burnt look. The nice thing with Mr Metal is that you can buff it just as much or Little you want.

Fan blades also in Metalizer, aluminium for that nice shine.
Before the metalizer paint I primed the parts again in gloss black.

When buffed to the Point you like they are sealed. The sealer acts as protection and stops the paint smearing of...The parts were also primed again in gloss black

Fan blades done with a bit of ink wash.

Cockpit parts base coated in dark grey (I used RLM66) and post shaded a bit in a darker tone.

The real seat, no ejection, just an all Wood seat!

Mixing to paint the Wood.

Done

Then an oil wash

Finally some clay based wash (cant remember if I used Flory models or Ultimate...well they are the same so)

Cushion made of White tack...

Painted

Great progress! Nice work on the cockpit floor. Those early jet pilots had some balls, flying with no ejection seat!

Lets continue...fast forward to where I am now.

Cockpit parts ready, painted, detailed with PE and minor scratch, washes on, dry brushed and ready for final stage Before bringing it together. W&N varnish is quite thick but a few drops of flow improver does the trick.

Quite Heavy injection Points in some thin places requires careful removal.

Parts fit is very good, a Little sanding and buffing was enogh on the tail boms.

Building the belts...

Secured with tiny amounts of CA gel, to be folded onto the seat.

Cockpit ready for final assembly

The PE instrument panel felt a Little thin so decided to glue it on the backside of the kit one. This also allowed the walls to be secured better.

Top of the instrument panel can be see through the canopy, so decided to tidy it up with a "roof" which I painted black and dry brushed a bit.

I elected not to build the PE Wheel wells, drilled some holes in the kit parts (as in the real Aircraft) and will do some scratch detailing instead.

Cockpit glued and final test fit in fuse.

Had to raise the front canopy as i raised the instrument panel a bit. Quick fix and wont be noticable when finished.

Thats it, build thread up to speed with were I am now.
Will glue Everything in Place and button up the fuse tonight.

Lets move on, not much progress since a got a Fu!##"¤! Cold...

Oh well its that flu time of year so, just have to bite the bullet.

The "raise the canopy to clear the instrument panel fix" after sanding.

Made holes in the air inlets, took som drilling, cutting and filing, will make som kind of sander to fit in there to tidy up the last bits...
Just thought that the original was crappy looking since the "wall" at the back is so visible.
This will give a more Three dimensional and realistic appearance i Think.

Cockpit in Place, and put a fat weight underneath, this baby has huge tailsitter potential so not taking any chances...

So installed Another one even further front...

And also in each wing tank...

Fuse halves glued together

Booms and tanks done

And...well...had to do a Quick mock-up to see what this baby looks like...

Yes, use that decal sheet and also buy this one and slap a "10" on each side...F10 Vampire!

(The Flottilj nummer is the only difference)

Ok Quick update, not much time this week...

Major sanding done, the fit was pretty good so only some Mr Surfacer 500 needed in the front.

Booms and horisontal stabilizer glued together, using fuse as guide to keep track of alignment.

Then tail glued to fuse, You need at least Three hands!

Other inlet about be opened, starting with a lot of drilling...

They fit ok to the fuse (or at least the left one did...)

Will open up the inlets also in the fuse...

Well...starting to look like a Vampire!

Nige, if I remember correctly You posted pics of Your sons first build right!
I loved to see that, You must be very very proud.
My advice: Save those kits for him to see/have in the future!!!
If he continues or comes back to modelling later, he will treasure Those kits, trust me. (if not You will, for ever)
I know, cause my dearly beloved Mom saved four of mine, boy what an experience to see them again now and the memories...

To be able to sand indside the intakes i removed the "fins".
Was going to use the PE ones, but after some dry fitting i thought they were to small.
Kind of in scale, the real fins are quite thin.
But I Think that exactly to scale is not Always what looks best on a model...
So I decided to scrath build new ones, easy job...

Also sanded the Mr Surfacer and brushed on some black to see what we got. Looks quite ok.

Ok Another small step towards when the FUN starts!
(painting, weathering, detailing)

Nice big inlet holes done...

Both intakes including new fins done and in place, also glued pieces in the leading edge in prep of correcting the intakes.

Fit of inlets was so and so, took the gap on the underside of course but will require som filler and sanding.
Sigh...more re-scribing and re-riveting...

Canopy cleaned, polished and prepped...was in good shape so only used the finishing compound, bling!

...And masked...masking canopies is great fun!

Feeling better now and will step it up to get to the paint stage, so I can get going with the SAAB 17 in the Bomber GB.

As for the Saab B17, I assume you already know, and have most likely already been as well, but 'Danmarks Tekniske Museum' pa Fabriksvej 25 i Helsingor have a Saab B17 on display.. sadly and very unfortunately it is hanging under the ceiling but at least you can get some reference pics..

..and IF you haven't been already, it is well worth a visit!

They have a nice Saab Draken on display as well.. amongst quite a few other Aircraft..

Ok, back to the bloodsucker

Three threads now...confusing but Think I know were I left of now.

Semi-happy with the air intakes now, dont want to spend more time on them, unless they turn out to look like a disaster after priming.
Some pics from the process. Thing is, the kit intakes leave a big step towards the wing. This is not the way a Vamp looks like and also the Swedish J28 has an extra round inlet hole just to the side of the big inlet. This is just to correct this, since these features are so visible and to me important parts of the J28s character.

No positioning lights on the kit which is a Little poor. So will make my own, this is the first step, will finalize at the end.

This will be a closed casket...the Trumpeter kit does not really allow for a good open canopy build. Since its a big and clear canopy I Think you will be able to see in there still.

Final touch up of canopy (I do it in two steps, first glue and Place it, after drying see what we got and final touch up.)

Off to spray Booth, finally!!! (now the fun starts) Re-scribed, re-riveted, Polished, masked and cleaned.

First topside base color on canopy frame to get the inside out right.

Primed, awaiting pre shading.

Some light sanding and polishing to take the roughness off the primer. Also detected a minor gap in the nose section which got fixed with a minimal amount of CA gel then sanded and polished.

Then wipe with Micro fiber cloth.

Pre shading done...

Also found a good match for the Swedish orange yellow color, Gunze 413 (RLM 04)
On this particular bird the nose Wheel hatch is painted SwAF Yellow.

Dudes, time for an update!

Time for the base painting and post shading.

Colors used for underside. Main color Gunze 307, its a grey with a blue tone which corresponds fairly good with the original color.
Black and White to be mixed in for post shading, bleaching and darkening.
I also used a Brown shade to already now start the weathering where there will be soot and oil leakage.
The Swedish Vampires were heavily used and often worn and Dirty. (=lots of weathering potential)

Colors used for the upper Surfaces, main color is Gunze 309, a good match for early SwAF fighters.
In the pic underside is done and masked (masking was a pain)

Painted blood sucker, incl. post shading and start of weathering process.
Got some overspray on the underside by the exhaust in "V" shape...have not decided if I will do a touch up or use it as base for weathering...

Next...scratching and chipping. Then clear coat, decals, wash. Also build and paint the gears, Wheels etc.

Took a cup of coffee and looked at some reference pics...changed my mind.
Scuffing, scratching and chipping will be last, Before final varnish.
Want to see the completed model incl decals and wash first to determine the level of wear.
Also want to be able to apply it on the decals in places.
Ok, heading for mancave to put on a couple of coats of clear.

Looking mighty fine, Sir.. great to see such good progress!

My P-47's have stalled, and in order to get my mojo back I will start an old Heller 1/72 TF 104 G 'Starfighter' this evening, in Danish Air Force colours, i.e all over green.. no fancy camo!!

Unless I change my mind and dig soimething else out..
