HobbyBoss 1/35 DANA 152 mm

Post by garywintin »

Hello all.

Happy new year to you all and hope you had a nice year end. This kit will be my first build log for the year 2014. I am almost ( about 98%) finished with the nashorn so I decided to open up a new box which I have been eyeing to open since I bought it.

( Note to ISM guys - I wasn't aware of the steel rain SIG and only find out about that a few days ago from Gav but it was already too late .... $£%£%$^& )

I planned to make a full step-by-step build log hence I have taken a lot of pictures so please bear with me on this.

Here is the box -
Image

And the sprue shots-
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

This baby has quite a lot of parts and is very well detailed. Let's start shall we-
The instruction asked to start from the cab but I decided to start from the chassis and frame -
Image

A lot of ejector pin marks there which have been tackled with Deluxe material's perfect plastic putty.
Which is followed up those two little things on the front and back
Image

Image

Followed up by the front 4 wheels suspension -
Image

A lot of steps and parts for that block, which goes on the chassis ( is that what is is called?? ) like so -
Image

What comes next is the drive shaft -
Image

which goes on to the chassis like so -
Image

I then put up the suspensions for the rear four wheels -
Image

and this goes on the chassis and attaches with the drive shaft -
Image

The instruction calls to put on the engine but I didn't want to do it yet so I moved on to the lower half of the front cab -
The out side -
Image

The inside.
With the inside, I decided to fully paint it before hand as I plan to show the front wind shield cover open. I didn't do a great job with the painting as it won't be that visible anyway. Just enough to imply it is there.
Image

I didn't want to wast time or paint so I quickly build up the upper half of the front cab and painted it as well -
Image

Well, I will stop here for the first update. See you next update.

Right.. update is due on this baby. I do apologize but I have been busy.

Right, following up what I did, I had to put up this little back wall of the cab. I took the photo just next to the instruction just to let you guys know what I'm talking about LOL.

Image

This back wall goes on like so -

Image

Following that, I decided to put on everything I need to put on the exterior of the upper half of the cab -

Image

If you are building this or plan to build this, BE VERY CAREFUL with these particular steps as there is a crap load of small stuffs to put on. There are also very numerous amount of grab handles which you have to cut and clean with great care and the head light guards are equally hard to cut as well.

I still haven't put on the wind shield nor the wind shields cover.
So I put them on like so -
Image
The instruction calls for the wiper to be put on just after the windshields are installed but I decided to left them off until I have painted the front.

After that, I deviated from the instruction and moved on to the build the turret (because I just can't resist it LOL )

I laid out the parts that make up the gun for you guys -
Image

which build up to to a nice gun ( the barrel is not long enough for my taste )
Image

These are the main hydraulics responsible for the gun's elevation -
Image

The two longer ones are actual working hydraulics which is made up of these parts -
Image

BE VERY CAREFUL when gluing the two halves as you can glue the piston(the rod) by accident. The springs are pretty strong as far as I have noticed.

This is the maxium elevation it can attain -
Image

This is the left half of the turret -
Exterior -
Image

Inner -
Image

and the right half -
exterior -
Image

Inner-
Image

At this point, I have put on all the grab handles, almost all the doors and tools. I still have to put on the hatch and the many little P.E hooks.

The turret dry fitted -
Image
The turret is only about 70% finished at this point. ( yeah, I know, there's no cab in this photo)

Well, that's about it for this update

Right .. Time to update this baby after releasing 3 completed builds ..

Last time, I stopped at the dry fitting of the turret. Let's carry on from there

The next step for the turret calls for the glueing of the little P.E hooks. That hooks are really small but HobbyBoss in all its wisdom put in a pre-made etch folding/bending thingy just for these little hook. It's located on Sprue P.

Image

Image

I was scared when I first saw it but after carefully looking at the instruction, I was very relieved .

After the little hooks on the top, next up is a bit bigger row of hooks for the tow cable.

Image

The little hooks also goes on the back as well. Thanks for the folding/bending thingy supplied, these came out all uniform ( I think )
Image

I followed that up with a ammunition rack for the Anti Aircraft machine gun.

Image

That is one of the best looking storage I have seen and easy to assemble as well. You can also see the other small P.E stuffs as well.

After that, I had to do some kind of ammo feeding mechanism that is right behind the breech and between the two halves.
Image

Image

These twos combines to form this mechanism ( I have no idea what this is though )
Image

With that, the entire turret is complete finished minus the clear parts -
Image

I still have to build the engine cover and rear parts but I didnt want to do it yet so I looked around the manual and decided to finished up the deck area behind the cab.

First I have to build this gun travel lock -
Image

Along with these P.E parts ( again, I have no idea what they are )
Image

And then it is finished off with all these other parts added on -
Image

I still have the engine and the firing braces to put on and I'm planning to take my time with them as they look pretty complicated so let me just stop this update here and in the next one, we will pick off from the engine. Thank you for reading.

Until the next update.

Right, an update is due for this girl.

Last time, I left off just before the engine so let's pick up from there.
The engine is not that complicated but it is a little bit tedious and comprises of quite a bit of steps. No problem what so ever is met.
Image

I also put up the walls of the engine housing by this point.

Next, I put up the storage boxes and what I believed to be boxes carrying the extra charges for the gun.
Image

They go on each side of the engine an form part of the engine housing and the rear structure.
Image

You can see I have also put on the braces for firing position. I will show them as extended to depict the vehicle in a firing position.

Following that, I started building the back/outside of the engine housing. Firstly, I glued on the photo etch Fuel cans folders -
Image

I then put on all the necessary parts on it and finally glue it on the chassis -
Image

You can see from this photo that I also put on the upper roof of the engine housing. Here's a photo from above to show them -
Image

I have left the engine hatches off until I have paint the engine and the interior wall.

Next, I decided to finish everything off by building the brace structure in the middle of the chassis -
Image

I decide to model the steps extended just to give it some thing to look at.

This guy will go on the right side of the chassis -
Image

and this is the left side -
Image

With all that, I primed this girl up, all ready for the shadings -
Image

Now, I have a problem -
As you can see, there's a grating of some sort here -
Image

and this part according to this photo -
Image

The bars are very thin and it is supposed to covered the whole hole and I have no idea how to fix that. May be I will cut a suitable strip of brass from a photo etch sprue and bend it to form and glue it. I don't know. I will see.

Well, that's it for now... next will be the painting ...
Thanks for looking

Finally.. some update on this baby ... I've ignored this girl for far too long ...

If everybody can recall- I cut off the last update after I primed everything so let's pick up from that. After priming everything, I painted the engine and the interior of the engine bay as it would be VERY visible from the engine grilles that I have shown before.

This was my first time painting an engine and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing but I think I managed to pull through. Have a look -

Image

Image

The ugly black lines you see are my shadings lines that I put on with hand brush as I was too lazy to put them on with airbrush ..

After that, I put on the remaining pieces of the PE which were the big engine cover hatches and primed it again and painted the base colours; Mr. Hobby Aqueous H303

Image

This was my second time painting this but I thinned it down with methylated spirit and it just came out so smooth. I never had that much fun painting with any other paint.. well, except maybe with Vallejo Air.

The 2nd colour and first camo patches goes on; again I used Mr. Hobby Aqueous. The colour is H37 wood brown.

Image

The third colour and 2nd camo patches went on. As I already had tamiya black, I didn't waste any further money on Mr.Hobby black and just used tamiya black. Lord, I hated tamiya black. ( Black and white are really hard to paint for me )

Image

After that, I left if alone for a few days and while trying to put weathering on my T-55 Engima, I decided to dirtied up the chassis and running gear like so -

Image

And after that comes decals-

The front cab -

Image

Image

Image

and the back -

Image

I'm building a Polish army version and I just realized, I picked up a scheme that has only those four decals on. While relieved of the fact that I don't have to put on too much decals, I was kind disappointed that there was only four.

Moving on, I applied pin wash to the whole thing. I used AK nato vehicle wash ( the black one ) -

Image

Image

Image

After that, I put on a matt varnish and spray some thinned down dirt/earth/dust colour enamels on to prepare for the upcoming weathering stages ...

Image

Image

Next, I followed up that step with painting of the vision ports and lights -

Image

Image

Image

I have no idea how to make the front light looks realistic.. this looks stupid IMO. I should put on some gloss varnish with brush to build this feel of a glass head light.

Tail lights -
Image

And I also painted the only 3 tools on-board, the tow cable and the straps on the little round thingy and the saw.

Image

and this is how this baby looks now -

Image

Image

Whew... well, that was a big update... all I need now is to followed up on the weathering and I should be done. I will see if I make enough progress to make an update.. if not, then straight to the finished product.....

Until the next update....

The headlights look fine to me, maybe add some spots of dirt or add a dot of lighter shade to represent them turned on.

Thanks man... I think I'd rather just leave the head lights like that. Im gonna make it dusty so I think the dust would cover it more or less
