Yeah they all look so nice - I chose this one because of the cockpit, be sure to check out the instructions for the ones your interested in on the Wingnut Wings website to help you decide.

Love the wood effect and thanks for the step-by-step - great work with the PE and that wicker seat is the nuts!!! Or should that be - the Wing-nuts (sorry, couldn't resist!)

Spent a very enjoyable hour while watching Paxman's WW1 BEEB documentary (as a historian his take/ language on some aspects is interesting to say the least) building up the Bentley BR2 engine.

A stunning and well engineered kit in it's own right - just need to stick down the push rods, clean them up carefully as they are very fragile and add some magneto wiring.

Looking at the engine it's crazy to think that as a rotary design all this spun at the same rpm as the propeller, must have been a handful to control.

Should be a joy to paint and weather

An incredibly enjoyable session today has brought the engine to about 60% done, I added some washes to represent caster oil and grass stains as the underside of the engine when spinning was exposed and the airfields these planes used were simply fields.

As ever just a few pics

Here are the parts after the primer and main metal coat.

Cylinder heads added along with the mentioned washes with the fuel lines removed at this stage.

Back

Front - I tried to make the weathering a bit more subtle on the front to represent the fact it is facing the wind created by flight etc.

All together with fuel lines added.

First time doing a larger scale piston engine so let me know what you think

I don't know about taking painting lessons, you should definitely be giving painting lessons!

Fantastic job and like Andy said, it looks very real, you can almost smell all that lovely oil!

Seems to be the common bug after viewing one of these kits. Make sure you get one for the WW1 SiG - you won't regret it unless Lee slates the one I sent him for review

OK so the engine is at the point were it is done until I mount it on the plane at which point I can line up the push rods and add some fine wiring.

These engines are available by themselves so I think I shall have to pick a few up as they are really relaxing projects.

As it stands.

With the wonderful propeller dry fitted.

Next I think I will have a go at painting the propeller

- which will be an interesting experiment.

Taking it for a spin

Decided to have a crack at my first propeller with bare wood, here is my 'make it up as I go' technique:

Firstly I masked up the two tone wood grain, rather fiddly.

The effect after paint application - very pleased.

Now to cover that good work with the Snipe's red stripes.
More masking, pushed my patience - thank god for the Winter Olympics in the background to keep me entertained.

With the red paint added and masks carefully removed.
Also dry-brushed the front wood and metal parts.

Finally some thin coats of gloss.

50% done - next will be the blades which are a far simpler black back and grey front

The propeller is 100% done now after another masking session doing 4x of this

Resulting in this... not perfect but very happy considering I wasn't sure how it would turn out.

The next job will be to take apart the cockpit to add the control lines and touch up some areas.

Biplane modelling seems to be it's own beast as it necessitates that items be completely built up and painted out of sequence usual aircraft builds. With allot of the fiddly parts out the way I made a start on the major parts which need fully completing before plane assembly - this is the wings.

This evening was another case of making it up as I go along - the method I used proved to be a bit clumsy.

After priming and painting the wing I yet again reached for the masking tape...

Because I don't have the airbrushing skills to follow the tape lines I opted to brush wash adding more pigment with progressive layers. This resulted in a build up along the edges of the masks making the stitching unclear in places. To recover it I carefully painted a lighter brown onto the areas that had been masked and then applied a brown wash to bring out the stitch detail.

lots of parts in that photo that need touching up.
Tomorrow I will blend the edges with some thin base colour and experiment some more

Dan amazing work!!! I just caught up with this thread. I have two Wing Nut Wing kits in my stash I got for Christmas. You make me want to start one now but I have been waiting because i just started modeling and am waiting for my skill to develop. This thread will help a lot when I start them. Thanks for taking the time to explain the wood grain painting.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

After a short break recharging my early aviation batteries I brought this kit back to the bench and painted the fuselage insides - I used the same wood method as before and took care picking out the struts on the linen areas.

All the parts so far - the cockpit components need a brief touch up and control wires placed before they get glued together permanently.

I finally plucked up the courage to attempt all the control wires, below is the result of a very fiddly and intense session - after these wires I think the rigging may be a piece of cake as the thread for that will be thicker.

You will need to squint at the centre

Another first ticked off the list in this build

Wish me luck keeping them from breaking.

The time has come - the cockpit is finally complete and held together with more than kinetic energy

Now that the intense mini kit is complete the rest of the kit should fall together in a short space of time, many new skills learnt and overall damn good fun.

Here is the cockpit with the engine added - this is the reason I chose this kit and it hasn't dissapointed, really tempted to build the airframe without the cockpit and engine

Can you make one? definately yes - the Wingnut Wings kits basically build themselves and I haven't seen a bad one built whether by a novice or an experienced builder, as long as you take them slow and steady it will be a blast.

If you are not sure Coen has purchased one and I am sure he will do his usual video build and he doesn't hide anything so if it is a pain in the ass he will say so

I tried a different technique on the cockpit covering to give the impression of umber treated wood. Instead of acrylics I used pastels shaved and mixed with water. If you like the result (as I do) I will do a guide at some point so let me know below

This will be given the hairspray treatment so some will show through the paintwork which will go over the top.
