Tamiya 1/48 Mitsubishi A6M3/3a Zero

We'll here goes. I posted an introduction a day or so ago about getting back into the hobby since I was a kid. Real life has allowed me me to start getting back into a hobby I truly miss so I'm jumping in with both feet. Starting with a Tamiya Zero. I must say this kit is a little intimidating just because it looks so good I don't want to screw it up. But I'm going to give a shot.

I was impressed that the kit came with canopy masking and photo etch.

So here are the parts for step #1. Quick question...is it easier to build the canopy and then primer and paint it or is it better to paint each individul part? I have watched many of the build videos on this site and its seems that most just paint the whole canopy then try to go in touch up the individual parts afterwards. Sorry the newbie questions

From what I believe, this is one of the best Zero kits around - in any scale and if it's anything like it's little 1/72 brother, it's probably the perfect kit for returning to the hobby with - the engineering expertise that Tamiya put into these kits is second to none and it makes for a very easy and stress-free build. What you might call a shake 'n' bake kit! Enjoy!

I have. Put he cockpit together but couldn't find any vallejo primer local in grey. I did manage to pick up some white and black. Can I just use white or should I mix them 50/50 to make a grey?

Well I finally got back to working on my Zero. Real life came calling and slowed things down. Cockpit has been primed and painted XF-71. While this dries I 'll get started on the body and hopefully there are no bad seams

I don't have any putty, any recommendations? I have access to Tamiya putty locally but there are two kinds. Not sure which one I should get? Tamiya white or Tamiya basic? Whats the difference? Also whats Mr Surfacer used for? Is this just a liquid version of using a putty? Should I get some of this too?
