Coen's Trumpy Challenger 2 Just paint :( hahaha

Post by Coen »

Well since Paulywog couldn't hold his wad anymore haha. The BB begins... I knew you couldn't wait till the weekend hahaha.
Kid in the candy store.
Of course I'm no better... and I feel shame... No I don't haha, and the only reason Nige has to wait is because he can't figure out how to be in two places at the same time. Sheesh... I thought everyone could do that.

So I'll be doing the exact same kit that Paul and Nigel are building. I think that I'll make this one an old fashioned photo build. I haven't done one in a long time and I haven't been spending anywhere near enough time on the forum since the holidays.
Time to fix that if I can.

So here's the obligitory sprue shots. :)
Lets get this party started!

And a video of my original box review that I did when Nigel first sent me the kit.
Cause that's who started this whole fiasco...
Nigel got me one.....
I got him one...
Paul got Chally envy and had to get one... then got hit with keeping up with Jone's and had to buy 4.32 tonnes of resin haha. (That I'll enjoy watching come together... it will look SOOO COOOL!!!!)

When I saw Paul's thread announcing this build I couldn't believe my luck - and now I see that both you and Nigel are also building the same thing, I'm checking the calendar to see if it's my birthday and Christmas all rolled into one!!! :cheers2:

I'd better stock up :pop: :pop: :pop:

Just got in from work and I'm knackered and I see another thread on here I will get the box down and get sprune shots if I can be bothered to drag my backside of the sofa and up TWO flights of stairs to the stash yes my bedroom is on the top floor. So if I can I will post start a thread soon promise.

And mike it's your own fault you said you wanted one so the kit fairy made it so. Really looking forward to this build and from learning from two masters so bring it on.

Hahaha.
I don't now yet Gav, I'm thinking the NATO colours. Recent deployment to Iraq... Maybe I don't know yet. I want to do more research and look at more photos before I decide for sure.
She's going to be battered all the hell though. Missing armour, mismatched wheels, chipped, rust, a real war pig! :th:

I have a wee bit of PE Rodney... And some came with the kit. Mostly I'll be using stowage to dress her up

Well British tanks are only ever painted in two schemes. All over sand for desert, and bronze green/black camo for other ops. We don't use NATO tri-tone here, too good for that!

Well you might have some, but they aren't in any active use anymore are they? I didn't realise this til recently that your governments budget cuts had resulted in getting rid (or trying to) of all your tanks. Guess they will keep trying to sell those they didn't.

So this will probably be the only vid that I do for a while on this, the rest will be in photos and text.
I'll be posting some shots after supper if things go as planned.

Wheel assemble... straight forward... NOT... the return rollers are weird on this thing. The arms look like they go on straight by the rollers are angled. I couldn't find any reference shots of what it should look like other than pictures of model kits built up.
They look wonky to me.

Image

The dry fit of the major parts... ZERO fit issues so far. What a mean looking machine she is.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Here's the suspension assembled and the wonky return rollers. You won't see them once the side skirts are on. Still it would be nice to know for sure how they were to be assembled. The kit instructions were no help.

Image

Image

Image

The rear plate took me 3 hours to assemble... there must be 40 parts for it plus some PE... It looks cool but wow that was fiddly business.
There's a lot of gear on the rear of these machines.
I'll be spooling some wire onto that comms cable wheel at some point. I don't know why they didn't give any in the kit.

Image

That's Freddy Duarte in the background... and some ugly bald dude taking pictures. haha.

Image

Image

Image

I had one big fit issue with the kit so far and it may be user error that's caused it. I dry fitted the upper and lower hulls after I attached the rear plate and they wouldn't match up. Not without bending the upper hull in a weird way. What I might do is take the rear plate off and attach it after the upper and lower hulls are together. I might be able to get a better fit that way.
I'm pretty sure that I've screwed something up along the way.

I had a visit from Switcher yesterday morning, he'd come but to pick up some parts for his M3 Lee. In his wake he left a tiny panzer III knocked out on my bench, some artist's texture gel and a stippling brush. We had a nice chat and he's going to join the chally 2 BB with a Tamiya Chally 2
Cool!!!
Thanks Switcher :)

UR :welcome: dude. Modern armour sure has a fear factor not really found on old armour albeit many were indeed revered. Looking good. I have put mine on the back burner to catch up on Nige'ls build. Watching this closely! Can't see what you mean wrt the return rollers.

There's no fixed dated Switcher, you can start whenever you want bud.
The return roller issue is kit specific I think.
I cut mine off and rebuilt them so that the rollers are straight now.

I had a great build session with Paul on skype last night, though he was leaking snot and blowing boogers all around his man cave the whole time.
Fun....
Hahaha.
Hope you're feeling better today bud. You looked like Shyte last night.

He's what I got done while Paul snotted up his unit.

Image

Image

I want this girl to be all battered by the desert and heavy use. I've seen a few shots were they weren't always so clean and pretty all the time.
So I popped some of the rivets and I'll be scratching her up. She'll have a rough paint job too.

Image

I have some fit issues that need tending. The upper and lower hulls don't fit together very well. Both Paul and I had a bit of trouble getting them to sit right.

Image

Image

So I'm going to start some work on BT-7 for another build today, then this weekend I'll be working on Nigel's North African GB. I won't be back at this until Monday most likely.

Mike, for your painting, remember the British vehicles in the desert were just painted the sand colour over the existing green colour. So might be worth doing a similar thing to your Leo 2, in painting it green first, and then wearing the sand colour back to the green.

And remember that modern MBTs aren't really made of shiny metallic steel under the paint, but rather composite materials, so chips won't go back to shiny metal like on say a big steel M4. And as a result I feel sure that these things don't rust either.

Hope you get the fit issues sorted dude.

Thanks for the tip Gav. I sort of knew that and I appreciate the confirmation, not unlike camo being applied in the field vice 3rd line maintenance or the factory.

Thanks Gav,
The photo that I'm using for reference shows quite a bit of rust actually.. for a modern vehicle.
It's what inspired me to do the build the way I plan to.
The paint is wrecked, mismatched armour, rust, dirt. Just lovely. :)
A real veteran.
A clean tank is just .... Wrong! Blah.

I never use shine for my chipping. I may use it a bit on the OVM tools and on the edges of the track links, but never to show metal on the tank.
Even WWII tanks didn't do that. It would be a dull smooth grey if the metal was exposed through crew passage and the like, then it would rust right away if it was left alone.
Right after a ricochet or scratch there might be a bit of shine where it hit, but it would be all rusted by they end of the day or the next unless it was repaired.
