Make your own tiles

I have always found the tiles you can buy at the modelling shop a bit overpriced for the material you get. So I came up with a fairly easy and inexpensive way to make your own tiles for sidewalks etc.
Maybe for some of you I'm reinventing the wheel here and there are of course tons of other ways to do this, but anyway... Here's what I do:

I saw that my wife had used up her eye shadow the other day, so I took the empty container which looks like this:

It consists of these three parts:

I used the rectangle-shaped aluminum part plus some air-drying modelling clay and a hobby knife.

As I have already said, making the tiles is pretty simple. I take a piece of modelling clay and fill the makeshift eye shadow mold with it.

I make sure that I fill it out completely.

I cut off the excess with a hobby knife.

The tile then looks like this.

You can even out the surface if you want a rather new looking tile, or you can leave the tiny craters to give it a more vintage look. Then I lever the tile out with a hobby knife.

This of course dents the edge of the tile a bit, so some careful re-modelling is recommended. If done carefully enough, the result will look like this:

With this method you can easily produce a number of equally shaped tiles.

I think the size and shape fits pretty well with 1/35 scale. I'd like to hear your opinion on this. Cheers!
