1/48 Revell SBD Dauntless (Guadalcanal Theme)

Hello mates, I just finished this and wanted to share. Despite the raised detail I'm very pleased how this turned out.

Is it one of the older Revell kits that has the really flimsy thin parts? I made a P-40B Tiger Shark in February...the parts were from a mold made in 1964, and it was really poor quality. It was difficult to keep the joints together, because the slightest pressure when handling the model flexed the material and cracking the joints in the process.
I have to say it was the worst kit I had ever made.

I didn't have any problems with flimsy parts on this kit. The mold is from 1960 which is older than I like. I did use a lot of putty at the wing roots, injector pin marks all over the place on this kit and don't get me started about the seam lines and flash. I bought a lot of Revell kits when I got back into the hobby and have been trying to rid my stash of them. Considering I spent money on them they will all be built. I'm glad you like it, I'm very pleased with the result considering the work this kit needed.

I had to use filler all over the place, but it just cracked open by the time I'd completed the model. It was my first Revell kit and I was a little concerned about buying another one, but I went ahead and bought the P-51D Mustang.....they're at opposite ends of the spectrum....the P-51D went together like a dream and the molded parts were thicker and sturdier. So, the P-51D gave me some hope. I want to buy another one to color it with the second option the kit comes with...it only cost me $11.99 from Hobbylinc.com when I bought it....they just had a price increase, though.

I have the P-40 kit as well, your comments are starting to worry me lol. At the end of the day, it's all in a days work, at least that's how I look at it. A learning experience if you will, this way when I break open an expensive kit any issues I have will seem elementary.

....but the large star decals...I didnt want to ask before and pee in the pocket of a great build, but why are they like that? Old kit? Or are they supposed to look withered?

I wondered that too, I assure you they are decals. My research indicates that these planes got repainted at the last minute by hand. The intermediate blue on the outside of the decal is suppose to represent that hand painting.

Yeah right. I thought that may have been the case, given the tough fighting of Guadalcanal, but wasnt sure at all. That's a cool historical detail in the kit

Sadly Lego I would not recommend this kit to anyone. The mold is extremely old, interior detail is horrible, pilot and seat are molded as one and it looks real cheesy, also major fit issues at the wing root. I custom fit the instrument panel, control stick and seat from a P-51 my son destroyed to make things look better. I know its not accurate but it looks ten times better than what the kit came with. If you wanna build a Dauntless I would choose a more updated kit.

PS Thanks for looking and for the Redskins we will just have to wait and see. I stopped getting my hopes up a long time ago.

In my experience/opinion,mMost of the Revell 1/48 single engine kits now are pretty much bottom shelf junkers as I found out from previous builds and my current TBF Avenger build. They are re-releases from old kits that were produced by the old Monogram (the Avenger was a 1958 kit)

I agree that if you want a good kit, find a different one!
