Chief's Tamiya 1/35 Chieftain mk5(3)

Post by chief5437 »

After building the trumpy chally, I've been smitten with post ww2 armour. I love the size of these things at 1/35! So I came home with this the other day, even though I was looking for the 1/32 Revell hunter!

Image

I'm going for the Berlin bde scheme on this...

Image

Wish me luck with that! Lol

Edit- this being the first Tamiya kit I've done in a long while, I'd forgotten how well/quick they go together!

Done...

Skirts, running gear and gun are just dry fitted for now.

It's an old kit from 1977, but it went together no problem. Just a small seam on the gun, but that's it.
Really impressed how this had stood the test of time.

That's it for now, thanks for looking fellas :cheers2:

Damn!! Is that primed or is that the styrene colour Chief? Freaking awesome looking tank, I can understand skipping the Hunter for this thing :)

Cheers dude! It's a beauty. Not primed yet, the styrene is a real dark green. Looks like primer in the pic though!

Dang Chief!
Awesome looking model
Good luck on that cammo scheme, it would require a lot of masking I think.
Would love to see it :thumb2:

@frans, I agree, 73 was the best year ever :thumb2:

Lots of masking to do, started last night, it's a bit fiddly in parts.

@lee, I'll let you know how it goes, I'm getting the feeling it would be best to mask and paint sub assemblies before main assembly. Have you started yours, or is it still in tubs? Lol

You is a funny man...!!!

I haven't started mine yet, but I agree, it would be better to paint in sub assemblies. With this type of scheme should be easy to get away with as the continuity isn't the same as a normal camo pattern :)

There is a little continuity on the pics I'm using, but easy enough to transfer. I can now definitely say sub assemblies are the way to go!!

As for being square, I've got my fingers crossed as it won't become clear til it's completed. Wish me luck! Lol!

Thanks for checking in guys!

Well, after a good 10 hours of masking, it's reveal time. Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be a Berlin Bde chieftain.......

I'm quite pleased with how it's turned out, a bit of touch up reqd in a few spots. But not bad for a first attempt.

I'm also surprised at how effective this pattern is at breaking up the shape. When held up against a breeze block wall, it really plays tricks on the eye!

That's all for now, thanks for looking guys :th: :th: :th: :cheers2:

Very nice work mate!

It's a lot like the razzle dazzle pattern hey used to use on ships.

They had this design for urban fighting in Berlin as the size and shapes are of the colours are the same as the majority of the windows in buildings of Berlin at the time :D

looks fantastic.

Mine is sat on side awaiting build. I'm now waiting for photo-etch parts from Hammnet before start.
That is such a good paint job. Really impressed.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated!

@RED my references say that the colours used were RAL 7031 blue grey, RAL 8025 brown and RAL 9010 white. After looking at various pics and with my limited paint stock I settled on tamiya xf-82 ocean grey 2 (RAF), xf-49 khaki and xf-2 flat white.

For the lower hull and running gear, I found conflicting references. Some say satin black, others say bronze green. I expect bronze green would be more likely, but it's hard to tell from period pictures, and museum pieces aren't usually that accurate. In the end I met half way and used a black green undercoat with dark grey blue topcoat.

HTH cheers

Right then, I'm calling this done for now. I've kept the weathering to a minimum, I don't suppose these got too dirty in an urban environment. The local model shop does their own resin castings, and I believe they'll soon have a nice street base available. So I might get one for this in the future.

I really enjoyed this build, first tamiya in ages, so it was nice having a kit that went together with no problems! If need be I can still take the skirts, running gear and upper hull apart, the fit is that good!

Anyway, on with the pics...

It's also very inspiring! I wonder what a T90a would look like with that pattern?
