Eduard/Airfix BAC Lightning Mk 2 1/48

Hello fellow model makers.

I joined recently and had a good look around and I must say that I've seen some great things on here and everybody is welcoming and friendly. So (gulp) time to share..... my name is Will and I make plastic models etc....

Bought this a few years ago and it got put to one side with just some work on the cockpit.


I've had some time over Easter to get the fuselage together.



I caught ChrisandAlexmodelling video build on youtube and decided to go their route in painting the spine and tail, decaling, washing and sealing in with clear. I used Tamiya xf-8 flat blue. The next job will be to mask it off and Alclad the fuselage.







The wings are together with the photo etch wells sandwiched inside. There is a lovely thumbprint on one wheel well (good old superglue).

This is the scheme I want it to get to.



So the next stage is to mask off the tail and spine and prep the fuselage for some Alclad. I want to achieve some variation in the panels so it may be a slow process and it will be my first attempt at NMF

Good luck with the Alclad! I haven't summoned up the courage to attempt it yet, but, it looks so good when done correctly.

Did you grow up in Leicestershire, or moved there? Where in Leicestershire do you live? I grew up in Thurnby off the A47 Uppingham Road, and just a village away from Stoughton Aerodrome. Every year when they held the Air Show there, I used to sit in the back garden of the "Rose and Crown" pub to watch while enjoying a few beers....it was a great view and they always put on a good show for a small aerodrome. Battle of Britain memorial flight, Harriers, F4 phantoms, Red Arrows, Mosquito, Army Red Devils parachute team, Vulcan Bomber, Concorde, Vampire, Meteor, Lightning, to name a few.

Lestah born and bred mate. Live in the beautiful garden city of Coalville Somebody has to.

I remember the Airshows very well. My Uncle's company were one of the sponsors so we used to get in the VIP enclosure. Would be early 80s. The Vulcan used to thunder over making a noise like a volcano! Fell in love with the Mozzie there too. The sound of crackling twin Merlins. I don't know if there are any more flying nowadays. Still get over to Stoughton every now and then as the Cow and Plough does a great pint.

Thanks for the heads up on the Alclad. Been biting my nails but it's got to be attempted some time.

I've lived in the USA for almost 15 years now, so I have no idea if Stoughton still put on a show, or not?

Envious that you used to get into the VIP enclosure! Were you allowed to get up close and personal with any of the aircraft before or after the show?

Don't think they do shows any more, more's the pity. Bruntingthorpe have some stuff going on and there is plenty of other places close by like Coventry airport, Newark and Donnington.

Don't be envious, was too young to appreciate the strawberries and champers and didn't get too close to the aircraft, but still, ringside seats.

I'm envious of lovely New Hampshire. Great part of the world.

Hi Oliver. Thanks mate. It is a nice kit but a bit overpriced if I'm honest. It's a rebox of the Airfix plastic with some PE and a little bit of resin although I don't know where the resin (mainly cockpit bits and bobs) has got to (been at the bottom of the stash since 2010). I like the etch wheel wells as they seem easier to fit in than carving away trying to fit resin in there. The one omission that strikes me as strange is that there are no resin nozzles as this is the part of the kit that really needs an upgrade. Luckily I've got a few quickboost sets from other Lightnings in the stash.
I bought it in 2010 when the airfix kits could only be picked up on Ebay (yeah, did that too) and way before the reissue last year (yeah, bought another). With 3 Lightnings in the stash it may turn out that at least 1 gets done.
