RS models heinkel 280 V3

Post by PhilsModelMaking »

been wanting to add this aircraft to my model collection for a few years now, so when this kit came out not only did i buy one straight away, it jumped the queue for building.
Image
nice box art!

Image
the cockpit. i added the side consoles and busied them up with some spare bits and bobs.

Image
Image
seatbelts from an eduard set were added, these belts are actually for either the me 262 or arado 234, so i thought they would be appropriate for this aircraft.

Image
noseweight! lots of it! this pic is about half of what i eventually squeezed in there!

Image
as she is now, this kit may stay at this stage for a while, as i've started finishing a kit, that was started by a member on another site i use, who unfortunately passed away suddenly last month. a good friend of his, who is also a member of that site and with the blessings of the family posted that, they (the family) would be more than happy to have kits from his stash sent out to members to build in russells memory.

Interesting subject there. The reverse elipse wings are odd, they almost look like they are on backwards. Its a nice and neat little plane by the looks of it though.

Sorry to hear about the friend.

Another of those German aircraft that were beautifully designed but didn't see favour with the RLM.

Looking forward to seeing it done, even if I understand you are currently building something else and the reason behind that..

Looking good. I wish Trumpeter would put this out in 1/32.
I came into this world with out my consent and will leave it against my will.

hello all! glad you like what I'm doing on this, i've been "off the grid" throughout may, due to work commitments, a holiday and the fact that as soon as the weather got nicer (stop laughing!) mrs philby wanted all sorts of jobs done in the garden and house.
the other kit I talked about is nearly finished, because I was able to put in 10 mins here, 20 mins there, and I think a solid couple of hours modelling will complete it.

then back to the 280! I did spray some of the parts in RLM 02 as a sort of primer, and the jet pipes in alclad jet exhaust whilst using both these colours on the other project, but that's as far as any progress has been.

A little more progress! got the tailplane on,
Image

And I'm in the process of fettling the engine nacelles. which to be honest look like they will need quite a bit of test fitting, trimming and filler!

I did read a review of this kit in a magazine recently, and the reviewer did say this kit needed no filler, which is not my experience at all! don't get me wrong, it will build into a very nice model, it just has the feel to me as I'm building it, of a limited run cottage kit, a very good limited run cottage kit mind, this isn't really a criticism of this kit, i am really enjoying building it - honest! :th:

well i seem to have somehow neglected this thread since last summer  long story short, the 280 got finished and i'm very pleased with the way it turned out.
its painted with xtracolour RLM 02, after being lightly preshaded as i don't think the real aircraft would have too much wear and tear, after decalling i then gave it a coat of humbrol's matt varnish No. 49.

Oooh, that's really nice! :D Love those kinds of prototype aircraft, especially german. And short-run kits too. You have done a superb job on that kit. Looks very clean and sharp.   : : :

Completely agree with planemaker. A lovely, slightly quirky looking aircraft nicely built. So glad these types of kits are available. Indeed the hobby seems to be in incredible shape!

I must say that you got a fantastic result.
Great work and skill mate.
As a Luftwaffe nerd I have this on my list. Have had my doubts of the quality and if it would be worth the effort.
After seeing your result those doubts are now gone.
We will probably never see a proper 1/48 kit of this historically important aircraft, sad.

Great build!!! :th:

:cheers2:

There is a 1/48 scale version of the He 280 and it's a Eduard kit!
It's quite an old kit but because it's an Eduard kit then the detail would be nice and it will have recessed panellines. But it's quite hard to find, but I think you can get it from somewhere. Definitely on my list to buy. :D

I know, its from 1999 and from what I have read its unfortunately a crap kit that is a nighmare to build. :ooops:
So havent looked for it.
I would not mind if they did a new one now though!!!

Thanks for all the kind words! With most of my builds there's usually something I'm not happy with, however with this one I can't say there's any niggles with it.
It was almost a surprise how nice it turned out when I finished it!
