Airfix 1/72 He-111 H

As a bit of a treat after our house move, Nick (Daishi12) Nick said I could choose a kit from Emodels. Because I liked the shape of the He-111 (and it was reasonably cheap) I chose the Airfix He-111.

Emodels gave their usual first class service and I had the kit after about 4 days..

I was impressed by the usual high quality Airfix artwork.. Then things haven't gone quite as well as planned.

The first sprue out the bag was the clear sprue... talk about 1970's NHS glasses. Very thick glass, distorted, and clear + had to contact Airfix for replacement starboard nose cone. (2 days delivery for this, gotta say that I can't fault the Airfix customer service)

Then onto the main sprues, VERY thick sprues connecting nearly directly to the fuselage. Raised panel lines all over and some significant distortion to wings and fuselage.

(Nick had his suspicions raised by this state of affairs and found that the kit is a few years older than he is, original kit 1963 with new parts added (possibly) in 1975)

Anyway, build so far:-








Note in the following photo you can see high badly misaligned the clear nose cone and wings are....






Undersides get even better









Next thing is going to be a lot of filling and sanding..

(I can only hope the Heinkel made better planes than the Airfix attempts )

OK, some updates on work so far,

He-111 masked out for filler..















Now Perfect Plastic filler applied and smoothed with cotton-bud (Q-Tip for our U.S./Canadian friends ) + water






(The Ventral glazing had a HUGE gap on the forward edge - Nick thinks it would work out to about 8" on the real version)







Should I invoice Airfix for a roll of 6mm Tamiya tape and a tube of Perfect Putty ??

Wow! That's a terrible looking kit! I think it's a crime that they can still sell this stuff in shiny new boxes! When will they stop?!

However, your doing a great job of it, and these bad fitting kits will help you improve your modelling skills way quicker than a good fitting kit. So there is an upside to it!

If only The Airfix business model was as good as their customer service!

Agree with chief Airfix really need to stop doing this.

But you are doing a fine job setting to rights all the problems great work.
