Acadamy 1:48 F4U-1A/C/D "VF-17 Jolly Rogers"

Ok men, my first Acadamy kit. I'm not expecting much of a follow with this if I'm honest, there's been a few Corsairs lately but stay with me as I'm gonna need a bit of advice......proberly.

Lets have some box art to start off with...



Some plastic bits... PVA glue is used to temperally hold pieces for painting..



Seat and floor made up....



Fiddelly cockpit detail needs glueing into sides...



Who the hell designs this stuff !!!!!!!!!



Prepping for paint, wings in background...



Not keen on some of this detail, various bits and bobs need to be glued the place, which is fine if its fits. Ultimate sanding sponges are good though...





You get a choice of wheels with the kit. These aren't the correct ones for the variant I've but they are the ones I prefer, so there...



Question... Don't know which one to do? I like the fuel tank but the bomb is nice too.... C'mon which one?

This was the third 1/48 scale kit I got for my stash (after my lovely brother decided to get me 2 Airfix 1/48 kits for my birthday - I now have about 30!)

And after I finish my 1/72 kits (see sig) I'm thinking about starting with this one....love the Corsair!

Chris, yeah Corsairs are rather brutish with that moosive prop and short fuselage. Just get on with it mate... Tank or bomb by the way? How's that Beau?

BTW I havent had much success with Academy decals of late (on 1/72 birds at least) silvering everywhere! Used plenty of micro sol too..

As I bought a 1/48 Tamiya Corsair (want to try a folded wing version) without decals, I bought a set of aftermarkets

The Beaufighter has decals on and just about to start weathering, again, can't wait to start the 1/48 nightfighter version in the stash!

Ok Chris is it the way forward, to get AM decals? Anyone else had any trouble with Acadamy decs?

Yesterday I managed to get a bit of paint down. "Office" was done in Mr Hobby Mr Color 351 zinc-chromate type 1....



Which looks like this....



Seat..



After a bit of painted chipping and washing..



Oh no! Who put these in there...!



Also I've used Mr Hobby Mr Metalcolor, the buffable stuff.
1st Stainless..



Next, the prop is Aluminium as are the wheel hubs...



Yes they're a bit bright but ill sort that with washes and the like. I also know that they aren't Alclad but I'm not geared up for all that cellulose flying around, so I reckon they make a decent substitute.

That'll do me for now, thanx for looking and you must tell me where I can improve lads, don't be shy now..

Nice work joe, as for the alclad I think the mr hobby buffable smell worse personally, there the worst smelling paints IMO.

Opening up the spent ammo opening in the wing, could do with a little needle file really



Completed engine, proberly going to leave this off the fuselage for as long as I can, you know just for convenience



I'm certainly not the worlds best PE installer, but the more you do it....

Not bad, it's shame that you ain't gonna see much of it when the canopy goes on (its not great), the instructions doesn't show it open but I wonder whether I could have open

Already done Chris, used Citidel sepia, but you wouldn't know....obviously....
These Corsairs are nice to build up mate, got a moosive wing on her.

No worries - I think I'll crack mine open soon. Started an Airfix 1/48 Spitfire - vintage kit picked up cheap, raised panel lines, not a very good fit (and I've found the fuselage is warped fore-aft). Will not put much more effort into it I think, try some more painting skills and then move on.

Got 2 Tamiya 1/48 Mustangs recently (RAF and F-51 versions) - may do one of those side by side too!

The scheme I'm doing is the tri-colour one, you know dark blue, mid blue and white, the question is any special measures to paint the scheme? Any tips on freehand airbrushing?

Love the 3 tone paint scheme on the corsair you can make the finish really faded but I can't help with the free hand finish think Paul maybe your best bet.

Properly thinned paint (50/50) so you can do thin lines with no splatter and a steady hand, get you general outline lightly marked then fill it in with a circular motion. Also don't be afraid when doing it, just get on with it is the best advice i can give

Prime it up... Lets go!! Using AK grey primer here..



I'm going to use Mr Hobby Yellow Primer as a weathering pre-shading thing... Hope it works..



Something like this, you know with it "grinning" through the top coat to give a blotchy effect..

Hey Tim - looking great!

How did you go with the AK primer? I'm having some trouble with it - not sure how far away and what PSI and any thinning (if any) is necessary?

I seem to have good/bad/ok experiences with it - what settings are you using?

Chris, I'm no expert by any means and only use AK by recommend of his lordship (Paul), but I don't seem to have any problem with it. I don't thin (I didn't think you could) and pressure's 25psi, just light dusting coats.. Which is where I nearly always go wrong as I end up with a big thick splatter
I've got a little Neo by the way....

This build was always going to be about the colour scheme, so here we go.
I'm using Lifecolor paint this time, lets start with LC01 Matt White..







Went down fine lots of light coats but the last coat has a drop of medium sea grey mixed in (not sure you can tell )

Next up is UA045 Non Specular Intermediate Blue...







Again went well..

Finally UA047 Glossy Sea Blue..







Yuk! Don't like this one at all, not nice.
I've used Lifecolor for a while now and I've thought they're really good BUT recently bit the bullet and used a couple of Mr Hobby Aqueous on a little Airfix FW 190.... Yeah I know they're much nicer to use than Lifecolor it's just I'd already bought these paints before my Mr Hobby light went on!
Anyway, thanx for looking........

Hmmm..... Much too light will need toning down me thinks..

Oh yeah and a bit of a pin wash, light grey enamel paint massively thinned down down with white sprit...
