Effective Engine Exhaust & Soot - Product Recommendations?

Hi All,

Just a quick question regarding what you use and find the most effective way/products to simulate soot and engine exhaust staining on your model aircraft?

Is there any particular product that stands out over others? I've been looking a the usual suspects, eg: Mig, AK, etc. though any advice much appreciated.

Tamiya smoke airbrushed is what I use.

Hi Simon, I have seen a build (not sure where) and the modeller used a 50/50 mix of matt black/red brown for exhaust staining which was dry brushed and that seemed to work quite well from the photos.

I just used Vallejo pigments for the first time on the C2:





It's on the exhaust grill (rear/side of the tank).

It's a dry pigment, I put some on the area, they I used mineral spirits to set it, I and a bit more before it dried.

Ah, there lies the problem, I am still an air-brushless modeller.

I use a Tamiya weathering master the 'B' one ...it has snow , soot and rust , to me work ok , but I must admit that you can have other products cheaper in the market that work nicely , and this Tamiya product look like make up , and i suppose that make up could do the job (didn't try it but really is what it seems to me ... , also for rust and oil stains I use MIG weathering products . Also you have Tamiya Smoke , it is in their range of acrylics it is X-19 , some guys airbrush it in the model But other more experienced than me may give you some other ideas .

I was contemplating buying the Tamiya weathering (3 colour) kit that included soot, though will hold off and give your recommendation a try.

Now that looks really nice - great job! As a newbie I was holding off entering the world of pigments, though may have to be brave and venture forth.

I was contemplating buying and trying out the Tamiya weather master than contained the soot, though hadn't heard any reports from anyone that had used it. Will try the 50/50 paint method kindly provided in a post earlier in this thread, and failing that (ie: I make a hash of it) I will give the Tamiya product a go.
