Trumpeter E-50 Dunkelgelb painting tutorial

Post by Panzermeister36 »

Alrightey guys :D This is going to be more of a "Dunkelgelb Painting Tutorial" than a "Build-Through" because I know that Dunkelgelb is a really hard colour to mix unless you're using dedicated paints  so I thought I might help some people by showing how I mix it using Tamiya Acrylics :thumb2:

So first off, the vehicle to be Dunkied: Trumpeter's E-50
IMGP1676 (600x450).jpg
Superb kit, though the tracks were simply unacceptable so I got some AM ones :( You can see the some of the paint I'll be using, as well as the colours I'd use for a camo scheme on the left ;)

I also added a cast texture to the mantlet, gun shield, the cupola, the two armoured guards for the mufflers, and the laser-randefinder covers on the turret sides:

And wiring for the IR gear and headlight from the inside of some broken earbuds:

So to start the painting, I first wanted to add a heavy shadow/unpainted look to the lower hull, as seen of the boxart:

So I painted it with JGSDF Brown:

I did this on the inside of the fenders too :D

For dunkelgelb, I generally use these colours here, staring with about 60-50% XF-60 and lightning it with about 40-50% XF-57 (brownish tone) or 40-50% XF-55 (beigeish tone) or with 25% XF-55 and 25% XF-4 (yellowish tone).

However, for this pale late-war shade, I used about 70% XF-55 and 30% XF-60:

And then I just ABed it on:
IMGP1705 (600x450).jpg
In that photo it looks a ton more yellow than it actually is, this photo of the colour on the wheels is more true to life:
IMGP1706 (600x450).jpg
This vid shows the colour as it really is at 0:30 and covers the stuff I was just saying: :D

Next I applied a yellowed tint of the previous colour (10% more XF-60/XF-4 Mix) to the vehicle to make some tonal variances to the places that would be a bit more in shadow and to certain areas for not apparent reason other than to break it up:
IMGP1708 (600x450).jpg
To make it actually visible, the areas horribly painted black in Paint are the areas that DID NOT get the slightly darker yellow tint:
IMGP1708 (600x450) modded.jpg
This photo shows the two colours much better; on the top-left, the original lighter base colour (forgot to darken the lower plate ), and on the bottom, and area that got the darker tint near the turret ring: :thumb2:
