Nice progress on this one, Jos. I built this kit 20+ years ago. In fact I've just found the "reference drawing for decals and painting" sheet. An interesting choice of schemes provided.

New update


Painted the plane. First airbrushed and some details painted with a handbrush.


Painted the bottom (and invasion stripes). First airbrushed and then hand painted.


Here I made a little mistake. I painted invasion stripes on the top but they weren't there at the real plane. I had to paint green over it with a brush because I had already cleaned up my airbrush.

You've got some nice ideas going on here. I love the paint scheme you chose.

It seems a little rushed in places though. One thing I would recommend is that if you are brushing paint on by hand, thin it out some more. It's ok to put on several thin coats instead of trying to do everything in one coat. The advantage being that you will be less likely to see brush strokes and unevenness. When you paint small details, use the smallest brush possible. It will give you better control of your lines.

Nice to see your video and the progress you are making.

What I meant by using a "small brush" is that when you have tiny details such as your window panes, or possibly details on something like an instrument panel, that's where I use a small brush. You will find though that it is much easier to mask and spray your canopies. When I started out as a kid I did it all by hand like you are doing. I just built the 1/32 Tamiya p-51 and it's up on the site. If you go back and look at the build thread, you can see how I mask stuff like the invasion stripes, other colors and canopies.

Paul's videos on YouTube are also fantastic. He does a lot of masking work. He recently did a series of basic techniques where he built a German warbird. It's in about 10 parts I think. It's well worth going through it. It covers the entire process. I've modeled in one form or another for about 30 years and I still learn stuff from him and other guys. ISM is such a great resource.

Just out of curiosity, you mentioned that you have an airbrush. Is it single or double action?

Also, you can probably find some after market decals from a company like Baracuda decal for a p-51 in that scale through Amazon or Ebay. They are awesome. I used their 1/32 set.

Final Reveal

A small rant:
The first time when I tried to put one of the Fujimi star and bar decals on, it broke because I wanted to correct the place of the decal but it was already stuck on the wing. I tried some star and bar decals from a kit I bought recently, the Smer 1/72 f4u Corsair ( the decals almost had the same size). I put the Smer decals in some water, let it rest, take it out and then I saw a few cracks on the decal. when i tried to get the decal from the paper, it broke completely. I tried it again with another Smer decal: same result.
I continued putting the Fujimi star and bar decals on the model, and they came out quite nice. I used some leftover Revell decal because I only had 3 ''usable'' star and bar decals and I needed 4 of them.

I wasn't very careful when putting my black enamel wash on: I broke some small parts of two decals with my fingers while holding the plane. No big deal, I repainted them and they still look okay.
