Power outage at work today, so got day off. Gotta ditch the engine mount to get moving on this build; you guys are kicking my butt on your builds. This kit may be the death of me though





Stripped screw for the floor pan, so had to thread a brass pipe and tap the hole larger



Drivetrain trouble as well. Gearbox fits like socks on a rooster, driveshaft is wonky arrrggghhhh


Longing for nice clean, simple Tamiya engineering

I assembled to test and work out the bugs, but new ones seem to crop up.
Engine has to go in early to support the frame, so no point in engine stand
This one is a real challenge

This build is one of those life lessons of futility that our parents would say "builds character"

I made new driveshaft and gearbox shaft....polished aluminum with some step ups in size. Took about 15 mins
Then the front wheel fell off after a connection unscrewed and both parts went scattering across the floor.
I spent the next 30 min on my knees with a flashlight and actually found both pieces.
Too late for any photos of the work though, will do some tonight

Yes good point.
New house will be wood floor, but my workshop is cement with acrylic and flakes in it....I might wanna re-think that
An LED flashlight pointed level with the floor looking for the shadow of the part worked for me
I found a lot of dog fur while I was on down there too.....can probably knit another Bernese Mountain dog

Underside with two new polished aluminum shafts...everything is now in place with friction, screw or Ca glue


Top side before I start closing it up with body. Brass alignment rod for gearbox...will likely make the shifter and brake from metal stock.


My favourite parts: Front grill and body colour (almost) brake covers, tires are sanded to remove seam line


I will say that a white metal kit has a nice hefty feel to it in your hands...substantial if you will.
Similar to a die cast, just with better detail and customization

that's looking amazing Scott really coming together can't wait to see the body on with that grill all that hard works paying off now, knocking it out the park I think is the saying I'm looking for

The test fit was a good idea, but new fit issues crop up when you start tightening screws and cementing parts

You nailed it again my friend, exactly right GREMLINS
I had to laugh when the wheel unscrewed and bolt/screw went went flying
It took longer to find the scattered parts than it did to make the aluminum drivetrain

My son and I went to to this modelling meet today


Mostly cars and mostly boring North American manufacturers, but a few gems in there. I chatted with a guy who had this Revival Mercedes kit

He laughed about it being an impossible to complete with poor instructions and lots of work to file etc etc. I told him about the Bugatti and he wanted to sell the kit to me because I understood what I would be getting into. So for $30 I have drifted farther into crazy Italian model kits. But have a look at it, especially the wire wheels, they are phenomenal





The kit is worth upwards of $250, so it is really a smoking deal. I really must be a glutton for punishment, but good Karma that it was there for sale at a steal price, so I went for it.

Yes, but the ones that come with the 2014 new kit have the right wheels on it - well same ones on my "real" '14 mustang.

Pegasus Hobbes in CA have a great selection on wheels (and War of the Worlds kits - hint hint).

So I made some stuff today
The shifter handle and fuel screw cap. Both are very prominent on this car as witnessed on this one


True to form, the parts are disappointingly plastic in the kit.
So my shifter is brass base, aluminum flattened and shaped to a tube, styrene handle...kit part is black on the tube for comparative measurements.



Then painted with Ultimate's black primer using, wait for it, a brush

I will cut the long stalk shorter and paint the end aluminum so it looks like the release button

The gas cap is half done. Made from a solid brass tube rounded with a file and a bezel soldered to it.
This is immediately after the heat is off soldering....don't touch, it is freaking hot!!!


I am setting up for soldering the wings on as the next step. You can see the sad plastic kit part above


Had to do my chores so hope to do some soldering and then polish both parts up
I plan to do some threads so the gas cap actually screws on and off....gotta find my large tap,and die kit that is packed away somewhere

Ok let's see the gas cap progress
It was not easy, the silver soldering took a few tries and different attempts at jigs and stabilization....in other words it was a royal pain in the azz!




The second pic shows the black plastic kit part placed and you can see how small it is. Not totally fair as I have enlarged the opening for the aluminum sleeve that will accept the brass rod of the gas cap. If you look at Jay Leno's type 37, you can see the prominent gas cap by his top right shoulder. My scale is maybe on the big size, but I like that.


The other brass doodad is the brake lever shown here and then test fitting on car. Brass bent to shape, silver solder handle and soldered attatchment rod so it slides right on

I feel shame for not putting more effort into my build when i see this fantastic metal wonder taking shape here...
The Bro in Law Dan and me was looking at some awesome... but expensive.. white metal kits last weekend at the show on a second hand traders stand... still £50 + just for starters.... About $100 ... Basic kits too i think..
Please keep finding time and sharing the progress buddy.... it'll encourage me to get my finger out... though to be honest i have been busy picking away at mine..
Anyways..... keep working that kit, its truly one of a kind here on ISM..

It is funny because this is just putzing around, copying parts and making improvents (hopefully). Anyone on here can make custom parts out of plastic or metal if they want. The soldering with the brass has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get a smidge of confidence...oh actually it is like golf, then you will suck more at it

I am a pretty sure it IS the same guy, he is like omnipresent.

I am sure I could point you in the right direction and get you soldering with some little tricks without risking your home or eyebrows. No guarantees on fingers though, you WILL burn those a few times.

Much appreciated. I've been formulating an idea for a little vignette and it would require some metalworking (well, not require per se, but I sure think it would be better). But that's months away, I need to clear my bench of a few things first.

I'll be asking for advice soon enough!

Holy wonderbread batman that's looking nice now Scott since the last time I was one here ( not been on for a bit ) loving all the little bits of brass sets it off a treat, oh and Andy did take a crap load of pic I'll get on to him it always takes him an age to put pics on keep on doin what you're doin and stay safe

Been busy with house build so got NO modelling done the past weekend on the Bugatti

Ha ha , Friday night modelling after a hard day of manual labour cleaning house
These little Buggatis had a manual oil pump that could be used to get more oil to the engine during a race. Here it is in Mr Leno's car on the far left in the cockpit, wood handle with two rivets.


The plastic kit one was ok, but my brass copy works. Here it is at the rough test assembly stage...final shine up to do still

The Bugatti is four pages deep in my posts, so time to move my butt.
We are working on the dashboard and this is the reference photo, especially the magneto the black thing with 8 wires poking out. Don't even ask what the kit one was like..a blob of plastic

And then the dash\firewall I have conjured up with telescoping brass cylinders to connect the two as the kit has obscure reference and no mating surfaces for things to align. Weird.




That is a pretty good Friday night modelling session for me, happy to get out of the magneto rut and move forward

I'm running out of superlatives for this. Just out of curiosity, how lumpen was that piece compared to the one you made?

The plastic black part that goes though the dashboard is the kit's part. Everything else I have added and modified shape

Hey Wednesday night modelling...who knew that happens
It is as rare as surprise mid week enamours from one's spouse
Anyhow, got the firewall and dash cemented together, belt made from my band aid and a test of the wiring harness location




I broke my soldered gas cap, on the last pull of the saw to trim the brass rod...... so I got that going for me

Damn looking real good Scott. Shame about the solder tip though buddy..
Continued success, did you say this build is gonna start and drive once complete? Lol..
