Thanks guys... It's was just dumb luck that the paint came out the way it did.
Really really... Nothing special. I added the ultimate thinner... That the only thing that I did differently than I normally do.

And Frans... This is for you compliments of Paul.

Dude that gold looks awesome! I had heard that the VMA metallics were very good, because the pigment is much finer than some other acrylic metallics, and that helps give a much smoother finish.

Lovely!

It seems to be the case here... it looks wonderful so far.
I need to hit it with the micro mesh and give her another thing coat mixed with a tiny bit of silver to make it a tiny bit brighter.
That should do it...
I hope! :D

Thanks Chief, I almost did.
I need more practice with the alclads first. I need to get used to them before I spray them on a big project like this one.
Yeah she's gonna stick out a bit, that's for sure.

Busy busy busy!!!
A second coat of the gold on her today.
This one is 35 parts Vallejo gold, 3 parts silver, and 3 parts Ultimate thinner.
It's not the smoothest finish... but the amount that I've learned from doing this build is incomparable.
Probably one of the most constructive builds of the year for me, skill wise, next to the figure build.

The B17 is going to be camo. The P51 Red Tail that I'm planning on building next year will be the next BMF that I try.

I think so... Here are two shots of the F86.
The first one is just straight gold... the second is with three drops of silver.

Today I spent probably 4 hours all told working only on the Golden Hawk Sabre.
It was a long day to say the least. I ripped the gold paint not once, not twice, not three times... but 7 times today while removing masks for the polished aluminum trim. I managed to fix it all, but wow... this build looks like shyte.
Bad construction on my part, crappy paint job... not my best work at all.

However... the most important thing about this entire build... and it's the only reason that I even continue on with it looking as bad as she is... is how much I've learned from her, and how much I continue to learn from her.
It may look like Nana in her saggy stockings but wow she's a hell of a teacher and I love her for it.

Remember to squint when you look at these and I may save some face haha.

Next is the gloss coat. I was thinking about using Johnson's Klear (Future) to clear coat her, but Paul has mentioned that he's hear that there may be a problem between Klear and Vallejo paints. They don't play well with each other. I haven't confirmed this myself yet.
I may have to use my old stand-bye of Model Master's Acryl Gloss Clear, which has never failed me. It just doesn't have the shine that Klear has.
After the clear coat it's on to decals then a wash. Then a simple base. So maybe 3 to 4 more days work.

Well... that was fun.
I'm sorry to say that I'm going to have to put the F86 aside for the time being and I'll have to step out of the GB.
The Klear ... turned green in a reaction with the Vallejo metalised paint.
The only way that I have been able to successfully remove it is to remove all the gold and repaint.
I don't have the energy to do that right now.
I'd rather put her aside and come back to her when I have more mojo.
So for now... she's a shelf queen.

It will be fine Nige,... Just time consuming. I will sand it all back and repaint.

I'm not going to do it now though... I don't have any mojo left for her right now.
A month or two from now maybe. :th: :th:

Sabastian, I was close... When I first came down to the cave and saw her she almost got smashed to wee bits. :eeek:  :o

I am so sorry to read about this setback - it was looking so grand too. Easter will be a good time to resurrect it perhaps? :)

Sorry that this a bit late in the day but Vallejo themselves recommend not to varnish their model air metallics...(from their FAQ page)

6.3. Should I varnish the water-based Metallics in the Model Air line?
Some of the metallic colors in the Model Air range are made with aluminum and copper-zinc alloys, which will not rust in a water base, but the metal in these colors will only be dulled by applying a varnish, and these colors are best not be varnished at all. The aluminum and copper-zinc alloy pigmented colors which are better not varnished are the Model Air references from 71.062 to 71.068. The Model Air iridescent colors reference numbers 71.69-71.073. can be varnished; varnish will enhance them.
