Ok super stoked about this
I found a free Foose mag wheel file and decided to try a large 1/8 scale print of them
Hot off the print plate into glass IPa bath


These actually printed much better than the Cragar mags before


Little preview under the Stingray


Now to print of the fronts and the caps, then try the black rubbery resin for tires


Cat update: she is doing ok and eating like crazy. No cancer found, likely this blocked bile duct.
She seems to be getting back to normal. Thank you for the concerns guys

Exactly
The grey is the diluted resin in the bath. But too long in iPa early on makes your resin print a bit softer and so weak.
So I put it into the cleaning vat with MrClean cleaner for 3-4 mins, wash that off and another quick wash down of iPa
Let air dry and then off into the UV curing box for another 3-4 mins.
Then the resin is solid and not flexy at all

My tire resin arrived. It was an absolute fortune and then another on top $24 more for import duty…stay with Amazon stuff from now on

I also ordered Amazon a tea strainer for small parts cleaning and a large silicone mat that will go under everything so it catches drips or spills



My clear vat base ‘fep’ is showing signs of a deep scratch. I think I will tear it all down, clean everything, put down the blue silicone and the new screen protector, change the clear FEP and then re-zero the build plate.
Definitely a weekend job

Cleaned up my 3D station and got the silicone mat down



Likely need to change my vat’s FEP film as I see some damage starting and would hate to have a leak as the resin destroys your screen

Have not touched my machine since last year
A bit nervous with that vat bottom leaking on me, but it is my daughter’s birthday and she is studying some Greek Mythology.
So I found some files and got the SLA humming again

This is a Greek warrior




Then roughly sprayed white Ultimate to simulate the limestone they were carved in


Funny enough I re-sized it to exactly the same as Jack Sparrow…total fluke


For her birthday we had dinner downtown and saw Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel art show


Good to get the machine humming again, but it is not perfect and getting some layer separations. Had a Pegasus horse figure fail twice on me They are eleven hour prints!!
Have to do some fine tuning

They are a hoot to paint
I went Ultimate primer grey and then oil paint the shades, some more acrylic for teeth and eyes
You cannot see it but there are three shades of green oils on Rex then some red and brown oil accents down his back.
The references of dinosaurs have some amazing colour combos…that someone dreamed up
The “Spitter” Dino is from Jurassic Park and his fan will be fun to paint….he is the one who kills Newman (from Seinfeld) in the movie
Not sure how to display these

One of the universities my boy has got acceptance into for the fall has the mascot The Spartans.
So……


What a fun little print, I will give him this for his desk
I might do version II where he can hold a memory stick in the right hand

Note to self: Be sure to keep all windows open and evacuate fans blowing when processing larger resin prints or
else your wife will go on a warpath about how she is dizzy and the whole house stinks and she won’t be able to sleep with the smell…or shut up about it all night even after it is all cleared out

There is an old saying that
“Calm seas make for poor sailors”
Heard that in dental school as an explanation as to why things went wrong and that you had to deal with the issues and figure it out
Basically you learn more from screw ups

So a rough sea afternoon/evening resin printing for me tonight. Trying to print out the Merlin engine parts.
Firstly a big shout out and thank you to Matthew bfrd for helping me decipher the voodoo PC coding for how the files were stored and what programs to use to get them. I would not have gotten them otherwise Matt

I made a photo of my build plate, laid the parts out nice and low so we minimized the height and this the number of layers and thus speed 1hr, 45 min. So the flatter the object to the plate, the less cycles of light to cure and the quicker the print is made. Good


Blue are the highlighted parts…engine block, heads, valve covers etc. The grey rectangle represents the build plate..a moveable aluminum piece that the machine vertically controls dipping into the resin vat where a light shines up through from the bottom in a specific shape to cure the liquid resin onto the plate and subsequent layers off light cured resin.

The issue is with this number of flat parts, there is much contact between the plate and the clear film in the bottom of the vat called the fep. A large surface area between two flat objects equals much suction and sticktion. Supports are placed to help reinforce the hold of the layers and squareness. This means the parts can warp out of square and get wonky ass, when that metal plate repeatedly moves up and down. We see that here, the part has square areas and warped curvy areas


This happened again today with that pictured build plate


So how do you fix it?
Two ways
1. Angle the parts so less surface area is contacting at the same time between the two flat surfaces. Only a small corner or edge of the part Vs the entire flat half of the engine block is curing at any one cycle
2. Increase the size, strength, number and cross connections of your supports to hold the Pat layers tighter to the metal post

Problem:
Angles make height so more layers which means more time. The plate above was 1hr:45 min
Larger supports to hold the parts still makes for more stalks to trim off the part, surface defects, altered detail and removal damage

So back to the drawing board tomorrow to alter the angles and change the supports

The transparent green is the Anycubic enviro one:



It looks cool printing, not too expensive and does well on the clear resin settings I have dialed into the unit.
BUT:
It smells something awful…way worse than the grey or clear ones so I have to keep the spray booth running or I get house complaints.
It does a weird foamy thing when rinsed with IPa so I can’t recycle as much IPa as easily.
It looks really cool and prints are very solid
I certainly prefer the clear resins to the opaque ones

I took a print out for my daughter and brought it to show her while still on the plate.
Big mistake, green smell all over and very mad wife

Yes try the clears/transparents. They are a hoot to work with and you can even light them up.

finally have gotten over keeping the supports to use for scaffolding or something later..that I never will

A real world application for a 3D printer:
Making a marker’s stamp for leatherwork
With the aid of a super talented computer wiz, my sloppy pen signature was transformed into a 3D file





I then took the stl file and sliced it in Lychee slicer and got a printable form


Printed some out in two sizes


And got four workable stamps, though I dropped one and damaged its edge







Now I can 3d resin present out a ton in these in unrestricted sizes to use as stamps to mark the stuff I make

Catheads for the Black Pearl. These are carved wood pieces that are on the ends of beams that support the anchors.











They will sit on the ends of these anchor support posts

Lots to learn about old ships and their terminology. The ropes and sails go way off the deep end for that.

and Yes I will take a free well done STL file any day and modify it to my needs so the door knocker worked perfectly.

Then today onto a fun and useful project with the printer
I take off my glasses for closeup work. I need a spot for them as they dig into my head if I pop them up
This seemed like a great solution



It is a Māori figure found on Easter Island modified to hold your glasses…works like a charm











I put him flat standing up first try and had a horrific eleven hour print failure (overnight while sleeping mind you)
Then re oriented him and beefed up the supports a bit.Good result
I print stuff rotated on angles and as horizontal as possible. It reduces flexing, stress, failures and sticking to the FEP plate.
It is the way that works for me.
