The SO spent the evening next door drinking babysham and brandy with her Owl (long story) and the afore mentioned twins are asleep, shattered from picking raspberrys and tayberrys at the 'lotment'. This left the house blissfully quiet and so I decided to fetch the appropriate equipment from the cave and pop my photo etch cherry.

The cockpit, I decided, was too dark. I drybrushed it with a lighter grey.

And here they are, my first ever pieces of photo-etch.

Now, this is an Eduard zoom (meaning basic) set. It comes prepainted (cheating a bit really) and is self adhesive. I still however used superglue and my new superglue tool.

Eventually both sidewalls were done

And the main parts of the cockpit.

I have not used ALL the harness etch as it looked too busy for my liking, my technique was awefull and I should have used a better knife/board. But! it was my first etch and I think it looks the dogs danglies.

I recieved a text saying that more brandy had been poured. This gave me the idea of closing up the fusalage and adding a few more etch pieces.

The major parts are all now in place.

Etch wise, there is still the 'revi' sight and canopy fixings to do. Then scratchbuild the underwing cannon gondolas, fit cannon barrels, fit gear, mask up the canopy and yhen I'll be ready to start painting it.

Dogs danglies, I just didn't want to be got by the swear filter. Think of a bit of a dog that dangles! Means the best bit, important bit, that its good.

I keep forgetting this is INTERNATIONAL scale modeller and some coloqualisms just dont transfer.

Another evening with an hour or so free means time to start catching up on where I should be with this build.

I added the last few mm of the forward fusalage, complete with prop shafts

And the radiator air intakes, these did not want to fit, we had words

The molded in wingtip lights, now you see them

Now you don't

Replaced by a blob of paint and some clear sprue

Don't worry, they get better. While they dried (over painted with mr hobby cement 3 times, I screwed the test piece up by not waiting long enough or using enough glue) I decided to fit the landing gear.

This is the first propper test of my gear relocation. On a normal aircraft, even twins and quads, you still only have one pair to balance on, they level themselves somewhat. With four different gear legs they have to be spot on and all level, if one is longer or shorter the tyres wont all touch the ground. Do they all touch the floor.

YEEEEEESSSSSSS!

I want to leave those wingtip lights as long as I can, so I'll try scribing a panel line into the fairing, this will be a continuation of the one on the kit. Out with the dymo tape I got off ebay last week. Never trued this before.

Oh, wait a minute, can you scribe wood?

Apparently so, you can JUST see the line.

Now to dip the canopy in Klear

And mask it up, I cut the open section masks on the cutting mat, the others, on the part.

Airscrews on,

Spinners fitted, and a scary hole (thats a scratchbuilt wing I'm attacking, I do NOT want to do that again.) drilled

The hole is for the cannon to poke out of.

Now back to those pesky wingtip lights, file down, then switch to finer papers as you get close to the wing. This method is shamelessly stolen from Gary (Makingmodelsagain)

But it appears to have worked, hopefully they will look better against the paintwork instead of the grey plastic. Are they still clear enough?

Honestly this build is incredible, there is nothing like throwing the instruction sheet out the window and building from imagination and ingenuity. I had some doubts (as I'm sure you did) when I first saw your plan for the Group Build as to whether it would be possible without becoming incredibly stressful but boy is it coming together and working

Amazing work. This is a very ambitious project you are undertaking. Scratch building takes model building to a whole new level. Just remember to keep it fun.

I'm trying to. It'll be a lot more fun now 'most' of the scratch building is done, judt the undr wing cannon gondolas to build now.

I really wanted to get the Zwilling done and ready for painting before we go on holiday next week, which meant Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights next week between going away this weekend and holiday as of Wednesday. But I managed about 45minutes on it tonight.(as well as 20 minutes or so turning hyperdermic needles into exhausts for the beriev and recording a video for youtube). So not too bad an evening.

So what have I done?

Well, I started of with a wump of wood,

Then cut with my exacto saw and sanded to shape

I drilled holes for the cannon barrels but all of my potentials were either to narrow or too thick

See too small

But it will make a great pilot probe (which numbskull here broke off).

They were superglued on

And filler added around to blend them in a little more.

And all this after gutting the in-laws old caravan for its electrics, I HAVE been a busy boy.

Now I know that the gondolas used during the war (that were very much disliked by the pilots) had a flat bottomed section stuck out at the bottom (I think fot shell case ejection but I'm not sure I will be doing that bit. We shall see how much time I have after this weekend.

In that there will probably be about two weeks until I can do any more on this, here is a little interesting snippet for all you ‘Zwilling’ nuts out there (what do you mean it’s just me?)

The Blackburn Twin Blackburn.

A twin fuselage aircraft built nearly 30 years before the 109Z

the BTB was an anti zeppelin fighter developed in 1915 to counter the first strategic bombing attacks on Britain. It was built to have long endurance and be able to climb above the zeppelins.

It had a short career, with only 7 being built and saw little action, scrapped in 1917.

An update at last.

Well I left on holiday knowing that the building was done and painting was required after I came back.

The cockpit and wingtip lights were masked and a rattle can of vallejo primer did its work.

It was a mess though, grainy, lumpy and the cowlings were obviously misshaped. Sand, spray, sand spray and I think I managed to get it lookinh OK. Then to preshade.

I didn't know wether to be pleased or not with this, it turned out OK though and when vallejos RLM 02 was added in many many layers the result is starting to look promicing.

But there are some strange pools on the model though,

Anyway thats about all the actuall progress this evening/early morning. I also worked on the StuG and painted the kitched and entrance hall in the house. One result is that I'm tired. The other result of tonights 'geekery' is a dead airbrush! Sad face!!!

My own fault, broken during cleaning. It looks like its the hairy stuck for the forseeable future. This is a shame as I am really pleased with the sublty of the preshading, hard to do with a brush

Afraid not, I snapped the material tip thread and 90% of it is still inside meaning the material tip is now loose, not enough thread to hold in. Have toyed with the idea of gluing it in, as long as I avoid the needle channel and dont disrupt the airflow around the material tip. Probably wont take the pressure though

The Bf109Z is now officially German

Balkenkreuz and stensils on but no unit markings

Speaking of stensils, when I was a lad I'm sure we didn't have stencils! You got the crosses and maybe a unit embelem, these things take ages.

These ones I had to cut to fit the new wing section.

The swazstikas with the kits came in 4 pieces to be placed together, I used a couple of the aftermarket Techmod swazstikas, they are very thin, which means they look great but I tore both rearranging them.

Feels like I may get this done in time.
