Ah, glad to have cleared that up.. But now I wonder what a pimped up Panther would look like with 42" alloy wheels?!?

A gentle wash of Burnt Umber oil paint applied to start the weathering process;

Dot filters next, four tones chosen, raw umber, raw sienna, buff titanium and titanium white. Darker dots kept to appropriate areas and lighter ones in more exposed parts.

Then blend in with a brush moistened with white spirit. The idea is to slightly change the hue of the base colours and start to get a subtle streaking effect (which can be enhanced later)

I,m still a bit cat foot with the dot filtering, have not had much success yet.Always keep buggering up the base paint.
But that affect is just

Thanks, if you want to do the dot filter, there are a couple of golden rules;

1. Always protect your base coat. Use Klear or similar otherwise the weathering may attack the base coat.
2. Use a good brush.
3. Pull the brush down straight for vertical surfaces
4. Don't overwork the paint or the risk is that the dots will blend too much and unify as one colour

More boring than watching your side miserably exit the World Cup .... Chipping!

Have started the chipping on the hull roof as the image below will show. Used three different AK colours to map out the initial scuffs and scrapes, then over laid German Grey.

Oh well, must soldier on as they say, more chipping whilst I decide which team I can follow instead!

Thanks Manloon. The German grey is over the AK colours that are in the photo, the technique used here is over a base colour apply chips and scratches with a lighter tone of the base colour, then fill these in with a dark colour to form the deep set damage.

I have quickly knocked up a scrap plastic example to illustrate this better, bear in mind that it looks awful as a. was done fast and b. have painted very, very large to help to show the effect rather than down in scale!

dark tone added


usually apply via fine tipped brush or sponge or combination of the two. The sponge is really effective but harder to control (not used on my Jagdpanther)

Thank you very much for taking the time to do that. That's a brilliant technique that mirrors a lot what I do with edge wear in photoshop with outer glow on game textures.

Just waiting for the weekend. one the chipping is done it is time to pre-dust the model in preparation for the pigment application, and to paint the tracks to get them to the same stage as the tank.

Who needs the world cup when you can browse a work log like this, some really neat tips and tricks with well executed photographs and write up, this is way better than the Tamiya offering although it is a good kit... the suspension alone is just brilliant, the tracks are a really nice touch and im happy i logged in today to find this thread.
