A small update just to prove I have not fallen of the end of the earth or burned the diorama in the fireplace
The second Huey is done, base for diorama modified to a square and sheet of "spring grass" contact cemented in
Image
I am going to have the gunship suspended as it has just lifted off and the MedEvac has come in; trying to keep everything inside the area of the board so it doesn't hang over the edge and risk breakage
I scaled back some of the guys to make it less busy

Can't wait to see it finished mate, I know I say that too much but I really do mean it! I'm interested to see how you'll suspend the second Huey. Keep it up :th:

Hey Leo, thanks for checking in
The clear styrene rod on the front corner is hopefully going to be strong enough to hold up the gunship

Yours is looking great though Bob.
I think both of mine muddied up the paint job in the weathering..which I suppose is more realistic.
It is funny we work so hard to get perfect paint coverage and details, then slop stuff overtop to make them worn.

Another small update to show the bird the air
The dio is shaping up ok still lots to do, but I am warming up to it now
For the support I cemented a clear sprue and attached a flat base, then the Huey has a matching hole in its base and it sits on the perch
ImageImage
I found some grass that I have started to make a grass field effect around the LZ; I am cutting it and gluing some into small plants for insert into the board. Quite messy really :ooops:
ImageImage
So it starts to take shape. Lots more detail and ground effects to do as well as gluing the Marines in place. Used a plastic tree frame and got a larger tree in one corner
I have foreshortened the real scene in my transition from flat LZ area to taller grass to shrubs and then trees and finally hills; it is all a bit squished

Thanks for looking :cheers2:

The Gunship helicopter is mounted in a very good pose. Is very action-packed

I took a few days away from the Dio and started working on a MG sports car just to do something different.
Last night, I got back at it and glued everybody down, added some more grass and small hedges then suspeneded the first Medevac Huey just off the ground as if it were hovering.
Will play around with some photography next weekend with hopefully some brighter days as it has been pretty rainy and dark early.
Has been very enjoyable doing a GB and learning modelling and some history with some new buddies
Thanks guys :cheers2: :heli:

I haven't touched the dio in over a week and a half, so it must be done
Just did a little photo shoot this morning and will show some teaser pics

This is a depiction of the la Drang Valley LZ Xray.
The UH1H Hasegawa rescue Huey

Here you can see the attempt at 3 areas of terrain, foreshortened for the display
Grassland on the right, then shrubs and leading into trees on the left
The VC would be in the trees, hills and had bases in the mountains
I will get some more pics into the Final Reveal area after I sort through them
Cheers :cheers2:

Wooah...looking awesome! I think these GB's should be divided into separate groups....one single aircraft, or tank alone, being judged next to a Dioramic scene that has so much to look at, tells a story and has more impact on the eyes and mind, is to me a pointless exercise; a diorama that depicts so much and is executed well, along with including many models...tanks, armor, figures, helicopters and or planes, buildings and scenery has so much more to offer and deserves more attention than a single entity model.....in my opinion.

Good luck mate :) :thumb1: :thumb1:

Thanks for your post and I like your idea
The competition thing for me personally is secondary compared to how much fun I had and how much I learned about my build topic as well as what others made too
This was a really cool experience for me and made some friends along the way
