If all the hatches were open and the tank placed in a fixed 'hull down position' diorama then empty cases scattered around would work. But as you have it in a buttoned up finish then any used casings would be stored inside until a lull in the action would allow them to be chucked out. Of course in the end the final call will be yours but you did ask for opinions, I hope mine is of use!
Yeah I appreciate the feedback, don't forget on the king tiger the hatch for spent shell casing was a tiny hatch on the roof so it could be opened at any time really to lob out a spent shell.
I'll see what it'll looks like once finished.

I agree that the 6th pic would work well as an avatar because of the angle of the barrel makes for a square picture full of tank, if you see what I mean. There are pics that show more of the PE detail though, like the last pic. I have seen at least one animated avatar on here though so why not a short video running forwards then backwards just showing from, say, front left corner (something like the position in pic 4) to rear left corner (pic 8)?
As for the look of the beast, I love it! The shell casing on the back can be explained away in so many ways - dropped in a hurry when enemy was sighted, for example - so it has to stay as it looks SO good!
As for the half painted look, I agree that it would look fantastic but to make it easier how about front half painted? Like it's being driven through a spray paint booth and only got half way? The more I think about that the worse it sounds...

Cheers for the feedback phil, i like the idea of leaving half untouched but i think its deserves to be fully painted and it will be.
I cracked on with dismatling the tank today, anything that could be removed has been ready for priming. Ill prime the PE in alclad primer and i have an idea for getting some texture on the turret.
She looks naked now
Started with the tracks today, using AK's burnishing fluid, ive made a video about the process ill post it once its sorted.
One completed track next to the untouched one, it worked very well giving a good effect.

Awesome work Paul, like the idea of half and half mate, quite an original idea...!!!
Have to agree with Dave about the shell casing bud, would work in a dio but not on its own - IMO of course bud

She is coming on great Paul. Shame in a way to paint over all the extras added to this kit, but at the same time she needs a proper paint job.
I would get rid of the shell really, one lonely shell on the rear deck doesn't really make much sense I don't think. If she is placed on a small dio where you can add some more around about it to suggest its been in a period of fighting, then fair enough.

So for those that havent seen it i did a video on the friul tracks

So alclad grey primer to ensure all the PE is properly primered
And today Vallejo red oxide primer ready for its base coat of xtracrylix dunkelgelb.

Wow... that looks perfect.
Paul, if you get a second before you do the yellow, can you get a closer shot of that PE zimmerit?
It looks really good in the other shots. I'm just curious about the depth is all.

Yes ill sort, that tomorrow for you, it's a good effect the only place I'm not happy with is the turret centres where a centre square of PE were added you can see the glue lines were ive filled the edges, I'm gonna have a play with it (easy tiger) tomorrow and see, if I can blend it a little better if not it is what it is.

So when I first ordered the hull mounted mg barrel I got the wrong one, I got a sleeved aircraft one, I thought I could let it slide but its been annoying me so I ripped the old one out and ordered the correct aber one which arrived today.
The other rb one cost £4 these aber ones were £10
Some close ups zimmeritt for coen
And after a few coats of xtracrylix dunklgelb, I'm still not happy with those turret squares, will have to have a look what I can do.

Thanks Paul, those were perfect.
I see what you mean about those squares, I'm not sure why they did that.
You would think that they would just offer two different sheets one with the cut out for decals and one without.
Probably to save money.
I'm afraid that I don't have any ideas, none that you haven't already tried I would imagine.
Tamiya putty is about all I would do. Thinned with some TET. Then try and blend as best as you can.
Other than that the rest of the zimmerit looks great.
Would you consider doing another AVF with PE zimmerit?
Or is it crap in your mind.... inquiring minds want to know?

Yeah it would have been better with the two options, if I had known the problems I would have left the squares out but I'm not keen on that look as I always think it looks odd.
What I'm going to try is what I did the the mg hump (which does look better than it did) ill go the work with a real harsh sanding sponge to take off the superglue "bumps" then I scribe out the superglue from the zimmeritt lines with my micro chisel and see how it looks.
If I were to do zimmeritt again I would be happy to use PE but I would be tempted to try a resin set or even roll my own next time.
I'll be back.......

Ok so I sanded the PE with a sanding sponge and removed the visible humps and lines.
Sadly this also removed most of the PE detail, so I tried the putty and zimmeritt tool trick over the PE but,it looked odd and inconsistent next to the PE zimmeritt.
So I've removed the sheet either side and will order a full 1 piece replacement set.

Good work trying to sort the problem shame it didn't work out.
Best of luck with the rest of the build.
This may be the same sort of question as Coen's earlier but I shall ask anyway - Do you think the PE zimmeritt would work on a smaller turret with straighter sides?

Just try to get some Cavalier or ATAK Zim sheets to replace what was lost!

Good luck with fixing this!

I wasn't happy with it from the start, I've managed to get a verlinden PE set for half price of ebay, it has one piece zim sides for the turret so that'll do fine.
I'll be back on track soon enough

Yeah it'll be sorted soon enough Phil.
I sent some pics to emodels for their Facebook page and a comment about the zimmerit made me think this.
This is the Ultimate build of this tank for me (hence why ive spent over £220 on it now) and although its a late king tiger and wouldn't have had zimmerit mine has, late tigers also had a hard edged Camo pattern, mine will be soft edged and most tigers had the turret mg/cupola ring removed for ease of access, mine is present here. I'm not a rivet counter so don't care it's not 100% accurate date wise, I'm basically using artistic licence to build my favourite tank. A late king tiger with zimmeritt and soft edged Camo work.
That's not a rant btw, just me stating how this build is for me.

At a loose end today now so will get more ism vids done

Benn away from the forum foe a while so sorry I haven't commented on this build Paul. All builds have some sort of problems and by adding all these extras can give you complications.
I do see what you mean about the zimmerit tho. Gutted for you mate, however you never hang about getting things sorted.

Ok so im back in business
The verlinden PE zim arrived this morning
Looks good as good if not better than the eduard, but more importantly one piece turret sides
I knew it was going to be about to fit being one piece and getting it to bend to the contour of the turret.
First off I set to work with the dremel to remove the remnants of the old superglue.
I then put a slight roll on the zim sheet using my small shop roller.
Then using thick superglue I set it in place
What a nightmare to place, a couple of mm short at the front and too tall height wise, so I use some squadron white and my zimmeritt roller to replace the missing front section and trimmed the top and blended it to the turret using superglue a roller and my diamond file.
This was then primed in Vallejo red primer and once dry, given a couple of coats of xtracrylix dunkelgelb.
Much happier with it now, i just need to attach the spare track link holders and I'm back to where I was 3 days ago

That is looking soooooo good now and I bet any doubts you had about taking the zim off are just distant memories.
Seeing how good your Tiger looks brings to mind a great quote -
"All labour that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence"
Some would argue that Martin Luther King wasn't speaking specifically about scale modelling, but that's only because he never got to see this fine bit of craftsmanship!!

Sorry for the double update, but I got a little more done this afternoon.
I decided to make PE track holders for the turret.
The supplied verlinden ones were a tad long
So I cut them in half
And using my bending machine made two bend a sharp 90 and a soft, the sharp to go on the turret.
Glued in position awaiting the bottom brackets and paint
