this looks........ AWESOME
really nice finish
now i know that i have to move mountain of work before mine looks like this
maybe i missed it but is there a location where it is placed?
as the disruptive camo you used was used in the Netherlands aswell
now that is a diorama idea a marder and a nice scratch build wind mill
that should keep you busy
it will be a real show stopper

Yeah, it's in Holland somewhere... Could be even my hometown, for I have some ref pics of this Marder driving here.
Funny thing is, it crossed my mind adding a windmill... blown to pieces that is.
But as I said, still thinking what to do. I know I could build a windmill though.. tempting..

Just saw it on thes photo's while posting... Nah... no prob, lots of sanding to do

I'm at work and it's a Bank Holiday with no one in the building and I drew the short straw for this shift.
I sat a flicked through this build and watched with increasing amazement at your skill and intricate work.
It has all been said before by colleagues how great this work is but to someone coming out of a 30 year "Modelling Holiday", your work is something to marvel at and take inspiration from.
The world recognises Piccaso and Van Gogh as artists but really should also look at these models as art and the modellers as artists.

Were BACK!

I have told you guys I would not close this thread because I was planning something for the Marder.
Now It's time to tell what these plans are. I did a lot of thinking what to do.
I thought this Marder deserves a small dio.

So I bought this:

Witch contains a lot of these:

Put it all together, and you'll get this:

And here's the Marder on the bridge:

I'm planning some water under the bridge, and a large rock that holds the bridge.
So I started the build at the rock first.

10 pieces of Styrofoam stacked together with wood glue and toothpicks.

After carving and sanding,

Then I covered the Styrofoam with cheap toilet paper (clean ) and wallpaper glue.

When this dries you'll get a hard surface that can be painted easily.
also you can give it a light sanding to roughen up the surface, and shape it a bit more.

It has to dry overnight now, so that's the end of this update!
I hope you guys like my idea so far
The toughest thing of his dio is going to be the water, but we will see that in upcoming updates!

So good so far. ..
I want to use still water from vallejo. And water efects to make the water moving.
I haven't got experience with it, did some small puddles and water Wells with it though.
I want a plate with the water on top of it. So you will be able to see the water level.
I have to make some kind of box for it that I can take away when the water dried.
For veggie manly some tall grass and rocks.
I'll decide that when I'm a bit further with this dio..

And the story continues...

Welcome to another episode of rock painting and bridge building for dummies!
lol... feeling silly tonight, sorry for that.

The rock I made from Styrofoam and toilet paper with wallpaper glue yesterday, has fully dried and hardened, so I could begin painting it.
There are a lot of ways painting it, but I like the quick and fast way..

I mixed a black wash with some water to make a highly diluted black wash.

And covered the entire rock in being with the black wash.

Then, with a piece of kitchen paper, I began to take of the wash in a irregular pattern.

Then, with the paint still wet, I applied a dust pigment. I covered the entire rock.

And gave it another black wash.

Then it was time to let it all dry really good...
When it all dried up, I took a fine sandpaper and began to sand the edges of the stone, until the white colour of the paper was showing again. Had to be careful not to sand the paper away so that the Styrofoam was showing again!
But luckily all went well

And here it is supporting the bridge. The bridge I already painted in a dark brown colour as a base.

And with the Marder on top...
The Marder will be standing on the rock too later, but it can't right now, for there is a dirt road planned on top of the rock.

Ps, if anyone knows how to poor still water in some kind of frame that can be take apart again so you'll be able to see the level of water, (water without the frame I mean) Please let me know for I've no idea how to do that without the water running out again. nice progress Frans
a smooth surface is what you need
i spilled some on my cutting mat when i used it just let it dry and peel off
so a frame made of styrene plate should work just let it all dry and remove the frame
and you may not like it but that takes forever with this stuff
and you sayed it yourself that you like fast and easy
so iy is easy just not that fast

I will give it a go soon. I've got a lot of plastic sheet, so that would be ok to build a border. Just hope that it won't leak out.

I know still water takes a lot of time to dry, had that experience with my African well in my Tunisia dio.

But I've got the time with this dio, for it is my competition model as you know, so it gets a lot of time and attention..

it is very inportant that the base is waterthight when using still water
this stuff crawls in to all little.places and will find a way out of the frame if there is one
i.made that misstake.on my sws dio and i was lucky that i made a rough surface on the sides on purpose so all i had to do was sand it a bit and paint over it
it is just too bad that there is so little info on this product
since it is a handy thing when building dio's
and it can be mixed with paint to give it some color altough this has to be done very careful as it spreads like crazy trough the water and slows down drying
well then that is all i know about still water

The modeller in that video builds a container mould into which he places a diorama of a bridge and two bridge supports. I'd imagine that once everything is set, the container is deconstructed. The water is poured into the container "mould" in thin layers, all the while building up the colours of the water.

One thing you might want to try with the rock is to run some graphite along some edges of the rock. Natural rock isn't always straight matt, but has some sparkle in it due to the glass, sandstone, marble, etc.

Right then...
I need some things to test and figure out about the water thingie so I can make it happen.
Meanwhile: I added a dirt road on the rock, put some foliage on and started to weather the bridge.
I worked the edges of the rock with graphite for a more shiny look, thanks to a tip from becsta. Thanks buddy
the bridge is weathered with a wood aging solution from MIG. When the bridge is in the water I will finish te weathering on the bridge like chipped wood, moss etc.
So this is what I've got so far...

The white sheet the bridge is standing on, is the total dimension of the dio

The dirt road is know the same height as the bridge, so the Marder can stand partly on the rock.
This will be the setup that I had in mind..

I hope to show you guys a river in the next update

That's amazing... Fast like Alex of AlexModelling.

I have a lowly suggestion... But only if you keep the marder on the end if the bridge like you have it in the photos.
You could add one or maybe two infantrymen marching in front of the marder to give balance and a bit more flow.
If you move the marder more to the middle of the bridge I don't think that you'd need them, but I think it might look at bit more interesting with them.

And can you read my mind? I was thinking about adding 2 more figures, but not marching.
The marder is standing still, the driver is leaning out the hatch.
All they need to do is hold that bridge for the backup troops that will arrive soon. So preventing the allies to take over the bridge.

I was thinking of some sandbags maybe with a MG , a figure leaning over the bridge rail.

Hmmm...
I'm concentrate on the water first, then I'm thinking of adding more figures, but they deffo will come!

It's a first time for me too...
So I'm testing things out first on small scale.
I want to work with Vallejo still water, and Vallejo foam for the effects of streaming water around the stones in the water.
I really can see the picture in my head (witch is good) but I need some practice runs first.
If I do have a good test run, I might do a video on it...

Hi guys!
I'm a bit struggling for making the river underneath the bridge, for I never did that kind of modelling before.
But here's what I've got so far..

First, the base.
A piece of MDF and some plastic strips to make the border.

All held together with duct tape and masking tape.

Mixed plaster with Small stones, sand and brown earth paint.

To poor it out on the base.

While still wet, added the bridge. Putted a heavy candle light on top of the bridge to push it down into the plaster.

Bought a rock mould and lightweight plaster from woodland scenics to make the rocks for in the water.

40 min drying time

And these pop out

After painting the rocks they look like this:

I treated the rocks with some klear to prevent the Valejo still water being sucked up by the rocks.
The same thing I did with the plaster base, otherwise all still water would be sucked up by the plaster...

Glued the rock in place.

And poured 2 layers of Valejo still water into it. Each layer has a 24 hour drying time.
Sadly all rocks turned out a bit darker, but that's ok.

That's it so far
I can now take down the border, for it will be a shallow river.
To make the water move, I'm going to use valejo water effects, but that's on order, and didn't came in yet.
Water effects is a thick paste, so no need for a border...
I don't know how it came out just yet, But I can always build a nice frame around the base in case it looks horrible

You know... That way that the river bottom turned out, it looks more like a deep muddy river more than a shallow one with a sandy bottom.
If you added some white caps and swirls it would really look like it.

It sure looks like it.
As for the swirls and white caps, that's exactly what I've got in mind.
Just ordered water effects, and the foam I got in my stash.
Going to run a small test with the stuff when the postman came in, to see how it looks.
It's the first time i'm doing water at such big scale, so fingers crossed...

My younger brother is into modeltrains so that i how got to know them
These companys that are for trains often have stuff we can use aswell
I have some reet from noch that is ideal for this kind of dio
But i should build the marders first though
I'm building the command marder at the moment so that will be ready for paint and then it is back to the golden marder
While the paint of the d9 is drying atleast that will finished first

Hi guys!
And welcome back at the last update for know.

Making the water stream was a real ain in the butt, I can tell you that, but more later...

First I started to apply Vallejo water effects with a brush. Its a white thick paste that will dry up clear.

Then with a spatula I made the swirls in the water.

After that dried, it was looking ok, but for me not good enough.
Ah well, continue...

I wanted to make some white caps onto the water and against the stones, to give the water a streaming look.
I used Vallejo snow and foam for this task, and that went horrible wrong..
For some reason I cant get the look I want, and kinda blew it. I'm guessing that I need to do more practice with this one.
It's out of my modelling box.
See for your self, and opinions, hints, tips, are most welcome for i'm a bit stuck with this one now...

It doesn't look too bad though... But I do have to make a decision.
I'm taking the MarderIII with me to the modelling contest without the bridge diorama.
If I enter the competition with the bridge, it will be under diorama's, and the bridge dio isn't good enough (due tough competition) to stand out. I even think because of the bridge, my Marder where I worked so hard on, will not stand out even a bit.

So decisions made, This Marder is going onto a simple wooden base, and will compete in the military vehicles class.
When I got that base ready, I will post the final pic.
The bridge will go on the shelf for now, for I want to concentrate on the D-Day GB.
The bridge will be used as a display in my own cabinet, If I find a way to make it more realistic.

So far this bad modelling day for me guys

No way Frans!!! It's Wonderful!!!

I can see what you mean about needing some more practise with the product, but in all honestly buddy... you nailed it for the most part.
It's a little tiny bit unusual around the rocks... but it doesn't look wrong. I only saw it because you pointed it out.
I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.
It looks just like angry muddy water dude.
Success! The wet on the rocks looks bang on.
I don't know what the restrictions are for your competition, I'm assuming that it can't be a vignette or display base because it has a structure in it... so a diorama class is a must. I've seen the dios in European shows...

I'd never bring my work there... no way. Yours is an excellent piece, but it's the Marder that tells the tale when I look at it. Not the bridge. The bridge is the eye candy... the wow factor and distracts from the amazing Marder.

I'd leave the dio at home and just use the Marder for the show if it were me... I wouldn't be happy about it... but that's what I'd do.

But i understand the decision on the entry
I may have an idea on how to make the waves or what ever you want to call them
If you let it set for a couple of hours so the toplayer has time to set
Then you could use a hairdryer to blow it in the direction you want
I haven't tested it though as i don't have a dio planned that would need it
atleast not soon but it is something i wany to try
So maybe for a other buuld it could be usefull
