For wood I always just painted it brown then a heavy dry-brush with a lighter brown then a nice brown wash.

For wood i use AK chipping fluid, i paint the item with new wood colour, then apply the chipping solution, then paint with old wood and once dry just chip away some of the old wood paint.

It depends on what thickness I need. I also have a small pile of balsa and bass wood that I got from an art and craft store (Michael's Arts and Crafts) cause it's really cheap.
I'll build the box that I need from photos, then stain it with burnt umber and raw umber oils. Then I'll weather it to match the scene or vehicle.
It's a bit old fashioned but it works and your boxes don't look like anyone else's.

I think you're right that if possible it's always best to use some kind of real wood.

I might look in to TankArt. I saw something about that magazine/book on the internet.
There are some awesome examples of builds in there.

Update:

I decided to make my T-34 into a little simple diorama.
With the figures that came with the model, some mud and snow.
I want a specific pose for one of the figures, so I molested a few old ones;
ripped of some arms here and there and cut one in half to use the legs and because
I had to cut of a part of the upper body I had to cut a peace out of an unused tank part
to create a belt part for the figure.
Am I a Dr. Frankenstein or what!!

I looked up some self help sites for making my own snow.
And found a home brew solution:
It's baking flower and hair conditioner!!
To this recipe I added white glue to get it to harden.
I made a little patch to test it. Wondering how it's gonna work out.
It's not very white, so I'm gonna have to paint it white when it's dried up.

I love that snow idea! Definitely be trying that out one day. The model looks superb, so many different weathered colours, fantastic. I feel a bit out of my depth offering you advice on painting wood but here goes: I'll paint a light wood colour (like a yellow shade) over the whole area and then do thin lines of a darker wood colour (a brown shade for example) over the top for the grain, possibly with a a few pencil marks for knots in the wood and then, to blend it all together better I usually do a brown wash over everything which gives it a more natural feel and ages the wood.

Road map and road sign.

I googled images of roadmaps and road signs.
Printed them out real small.
Folded the roadmap and gave it to Igor.

Cut a peace of cardboard to stick the sign on.
And cut a wooden stick into small match like sticks.

Now I gonna paint and weather the sign.
And then it's on to making the dio!

Wow, generally speaking, Tamiya figures are usually complete crap.
Your paint job however makes me want a few, DUDE... you did an awesome job on those.

Fantastic work on the T-34 Han. Weathering is top notch. Looks like a war hardened veteran.
Wood looks best when you can see the grain showing through....with a new, sharp no.11 x-acto blade scribe wiggly and segmented grain patterns into the plastic. Basecoat a med. tone brown....dark wash the newly scribed routs....then dry brush a lighter brown or tan to highlight. The routs take the dark wash, but when you scribe there's a curf ridge left on both sides of the scribe.....the dry brush will highlight this. This method works pretty well for me.

Build update.

Time to start building the dio!

From the forrest I got:

- Little roots for making trees. Roots from real trees make excellent trees! they have more 'branches' then the real branches from the same tree.


- Little blobs of moss and loose moss


- dry leafs grinded into tiny chips and Sand


For the base I used a photoframe. Removed the glass plate.


For making the mud I used Modellers Powder mixed with water


For the road I mixed sand through the power to give it more structure.


The completed dio before painting and snow
The areas beside the road I did without sand mixed trough to keep it smooth because it hase to be smooth for the snow base.


I sprinkled the leaf ships and little pebbles over the road and along side the road.


I stuck some loose moss and some foam green here and there where it might show up even after the snow has fallen..


Now all we have to do is wait for it to dry.

Yeah, I love to go out huntin' in the forest for 1/35 scale stuff. Anything that can pass for tiny.
And of course it's cheap! And nothing makes nature like nature itself.

The roots might be oak or beech, I'm not sure.

By the way, the smooth surface is just the base for a new snow paste recipe consisting of baby powder and floor wax, I picked up the internet.
I made a little test patch, but I'm afraid it won't dry.

Old photo look is color and light and dark treatment in photoshop and some old scratches blended in.
Filter hue and saturation: colorise and choose sepia like color.
Light edges on duplicate layer which I made lighter with a ovale mask to only ajust the edges.
Googled a picture of scratches and put it in an extra layer which I set to 'screen'.
Voila, old picture.
