Cockpit done
Made seatbelts of Jammydog tape, also did some minor scratch building of details that can be seen through the canopy to liven it up a Little.









Tomorrow we will talk about the weapons for the JA37...

Did the Rb99 enter service on Viggen ? I thought it where only used on Gripen, but maybe it was added to the Viggen arsenal due to the delay of JAS39 Gripen ...

The Viggen kits (there will be 4 versions if i remember correctly) are a joint project between Tarangus and MPM.

The uppgraded JA37 D and onward could carry Rb99.
No JA carried Rb 75 as far as I know.

Even the decals make me feel all warm inside, only in sweden do we mark the military aircraft with bright "saftey red/orange" letters

Ok, lets talk weapons for the Viggen...this can be a Little tricky for modellers if Your not familiar with Swedish airforce and planes.

The JA (Jakt Attack = Fighter Attack) version of the Viggen was the final version developed, the designation JA, with the J (Fighter) first and A (Attack) last means its a fighter with limited attack capabilities. (And vice versa for the AJ37, the first version)
An important difference between the JA37 and all the other Viggen versions is the engine. The JA got the more powerful RM8B. All other Viggens have the original RM8.
The JA37 existed in two main versions, the original JA37 and the upgraded version JA37D (introduced in the mid 90-ties in wait of the Gripen).
The upgrade was huge, but mainly internal stuff to do with electronichs and avionics. In the weapon department this meant that is could carry the Rb99 and the ECM pod U95.

Facts and figures:
The JA37/JA37D had the following weopons options:
a 30mm AKAN cannon with 120 rounds (Oerlikon KCA), it could fire 22 rounds per second.
Rb 24J (AIM-9J Sidewinder) from 1978
Rb 74 (AIM-9L Sidewinder) from 1986
Rb 71 Skyflash (AIM-7E Sparrow) from 1980
Rb 99 (AIM-120B AMRAAM) introduced 1994
ARAK pod m/70 (ARAK=Attack Rockets) 6 x 13,5cm rockets/pod
Electronic countermeasure pod U95

Loadout options
JA37


JA37D (uppgraded version, in service from mid 90ties in wait for the Gripen)


Early JA37 with a full load of 4 RB24J (Sidewinders, one on each outer wing pylon and on the belly pylons), and 2 Rb71 Skyflash on the inner wing pylons. Also with the extra tank on. (which could be dropped, and as such a drop tank at war, but in reality an extra tank)


To keep it simple,
If Your doing an early, as in a JA37 (this is the version in the kit exterior-wise)
You can load it with Everything listed above, EXCEPT the Rb99 (AIM-120B AMRAAM) and the U95 ECM pod.
If Your doing a late, JA37D (add two fins on the back, use cockpit and IP per the instructions) You can load it with Everything EXCEPT the early Rb24J, who was then replaced with Rb74.
IF you by any chance want to include the Rocket pods on the JA37 ( blasphemy) they should be on the inner pylons, center or wings.

Ok, so bought some missiles (I have always thought its funny that we call them robots in Sweden) for the Viggen and for an upcoming "go to Town" Gripen and AJ37 Viggen down the road.

Thought I share what they look like.

BTW my wife saw the package asked what those tiny things were, and then declared me insane when she realized I had paid over 50€ for them...


Lets start with the AIM-120A/B AMRAAM (Rb99 in Swedish service)
You get two per package.


Nice PE "Remove Before flight" markers and stencils. Unfortunately the sheet was stuck against the packaging and damaged. Will paint the bands so no worries.


The resin, those fins will have to be removed extremely carefully, very thin.

Nice stencils and PE, plus for the PE guides for mounting the fins correctly.


Resin, these fins are even thinner...also very small clear parts for IR seekers.

Rb75 (used with AJ37 Viggen and Gripen A/B)

The obvious question, is it Worth it?
Hard to say really, crisper than plastic but I was only impressed with the Maverick, not the rest, for the price.
But ok, nice decals and some PE included so I guess its ok.

I will use the AIM-7E Sparrows as RB71s and the AIM-9M/L as Rb74s on this build.

Went by the museeum where I am a member today.
Took some ref pics and thought id share a few on the exhaust/rear end that is a bit special on the Viggen.
No fancy modern ceramic materials, just burned metal in the furnace!

Not like any other exhaust I know...


The furnace, its huge!


Note the three thrust reverser doors, this is the normal "parked" position where the upper hangs down and the two on the sides are retracted.
(I guess when hydraulic/actuator power shuts down it goes down due to its weight and gravity.)
Its in the kit instructions and this is what it looks like in real life.


Detail shot of the "triangle ends", how that lamp survived the blast is a mystery, looks cooked.


The underside of the "spine", reminds me of something from an Alien movie...


There are three openings for the reverse thrust, same here, burned metal!


Ok, lets see...metalizers in different shades, ink wash, then Brown, red, blue wash and some tan pigments!??!


Oh...also grabbed another Draken in the store, they are starting to dissapear from the marketplace!

Build pics are coming, slowly progressing this and the F-15 due to work...

Just wanted to say that the masks and PE are now available, for this one I will only use the canopy and Wheel masks.
But have ordered the camo mask as well for the next one. (was curious also)

These masks are from Maestro models but made by Eduard so top notch quality.


The canopy/Wheel masks are just as any other mask...some dont like em, I do!




This however is Amazing!!
As I have said earlier, doing the splinter without pre cut masks...what a pain!! Now, everyone can do it and it will be true to the original and perfect. Love Maestro for putting these out.
How its suppose to look and where to use the sections and bits. (printed color is off and just to show) Also with color guide.


LOTS of bits!


Huge sheets of high quality kabuki tape!
This masking and painting process will not be something you do in an evening.


I Think Paul has ordered these (since hes planning for splinter) and also the PE which will be interesting to see.
There are both regular PE for details and Color PE for cockpit.

And I have started to experiment a little with the colors since I dont agree 100% with the green ones...but well see.

What a nice build and thread ! Lot's of reference pictures , still like the Draken , Had one in 1/72 scale when I was a kid and was one of my favourites , because of the 'flat' looking , sometimes was a space fighter because of it's shape ...those were good days
