These are great Nige.
I had never realised that that much attention to detail could be put into these. I've been completely biased with the fiddliness of armour.

Primed the model so I could check on all the seam lines

And it showed up some bits I missed which is why I primed it

So out with the masking tape to try and minimise the area of filler

So if I'm careful should not need to much work fingers crossed.

It has to be done though... the primer certainly showed that. It was really obvious.
Planes may have fewer parts than most armour, but I'd be willing to bet that it's the same amount of work to build them.

The worst bit is always trying to get rid of seam lines if your lucky and you build a good kit like a tamyia most just fly together and with liquid cement pressing it together will push the melted plastic out so all that's needed in a quick sand but some needs a serious amount of filler. That's why I prime it shows where it needs a bit more attention like above.
Hope it's not putting you of the Me109 you plan to do Coen.

No not since I was in my early teens Paul.
I was considering attempting that Bf 109 you recommended for me.
Nige here is kind enough to give a bit of show and tell and tips.
I thought that I'd take a few notes.

Right guys sorry to say this but I'm going to take a couple of days off from my modelling the ME is kicking in bad and I need to rest up hopefully won't be to long before I'm back on this. Ill still be around the forum just need to take it easy otherwise ill be out of commission for a good deal longer than that.

Well after nearly two days of doing nothing at all (wife wouldn't let me do anything) I picked up where I left of this afternoon because I was so bored.

Areas resanded and rescribed

Primed again and there we go seam lines are now gone

Then before paint and after every coat I rub it down with and old bit of denim. It just takes a bit of the roughness away read it some where ages ago.

Next up the white for the invasion stripes.

Cheers guys normally just do pacing and I'm fine but with the heat not sleeping and the kids being of it takes it toll but feeling loads better so will be cracking on with this hope to get it finished before we go away in two weeks time.

Just a real quick update

As you can see I painted the whole wing white ready for the invasion stripes.
I did the whole wing for a couple of reasons 1, with brush painting sometime you can see the undercoat especially with something like white because you need a few layers in this case I did 3 coats and 2, it will help the yellow on the leading edges to stand out a bit more.

About the bands, they were 18" wide that's 457.2mm dividing 457.2 by 48 gives a scale width of 9.52mm. Tamiya tape comes in 10mm widths so that's what I used.
The wings were easy the fuselage however was a nightmare and i couldn't get it right so I just masked the area of for now and ill do the black bands when I come to paint it.
Any tips would be a great help.

After doing some research the invasion stripes on most aircraft during WWII were not perfect so I'm going to just get mine as straight as I can.

That's what I try to do with armour markings.
I try to make them look imperfect because... well they were.
They were almost all hand applied with a brush, mop, or a sprayer so they weren't perfect by any means.
I think that it will add a really nice shade of realism to her Nige.
I don't envy you in the painting though... hooo what a job that will be.

As an aside, a possible diorama idea would be to build that picture you have there of the fellas applying the markings.
Nice human touch if you were so inclined.

Was planning something like that with my next spit build I'm hoping to try and pick up Me 262 for my next build and I've got an idea for a dio for it on the side of a autobahn with the aircraft in the woods at the side with a fuel bowser near by and some ground grew and pilot near by getting ready to take off like near the end of the war only problem will be the mottling on the aircraft. Oh and being my first diorama what you think good idea?

I know about the mottling, that's a bugger to paint.
Amazing when it works though..,. beautiful stuff.
That diorama idea sounds fantastic. The trees will kill you though... they're huge at 1/35... 1/32 they're even bigger.
A smaller scale might be easier.
Still it will be a treat to watch that come to life.

The kit I've seen is 1:48 and if I can find it lol. But it should be fairly simple to do I hope because near the edge of the woods they would have too been fairly small so they could hide the aircraft better and when it was pulled back to the bomb proof bay the trees would have been bigger so the could use the higher branches to hang cam nets from if you know what I mean. As for the mottling last time I did it on my Fw 190 I use a makeup sponge and it turned out ok so might try that again.

It will certainly be a show stealer.
The last model show that I took part in was topped by a fella that did a dio of a couple of 1/48 Heinkels being serviced. It was monstrous.
He won his category and he won best of show.

Putting a lot of sweat equity into your kit....looking fabulous. Though, I'm disappointed with Eduard.....thought they would make a better fitting kit.......nothing you haven't handled with great skill.

To be honest I was expecting better Bill some of it might have been down to me not sanding enough of the cockpit walls and the cockpit itself and due to lack of locating pins which would have helped.

I've been reading the whole thread and a big thanks for making such detailed close-up photos of your WIP. I enjoyed the sanding/prime/filler section, as I am doing that myself for the first time ever since I am a beginner. It surely looks like it is going to be a beautiful aircraft.
