RLM72, 73 are unique to "Seeflugzeuge" and beautiful shades of grey.
Interestingly both colors are named "Grün", green...

I'm sure now, this will be a real stunner!

Thanks again, Patrick, much appreciated! I love the two shades of grey...they do have a subtle green tone to them, but calling the Grun on the bottle got me worried when I saw the actual shades. But, after research, I came across a few subjects displaying these shades.

Revell 1/32 Arado AR196A-3 Seaplane "Build Update #5"

Well guys, 8 days have passed since my last update, but, the wife had Good Friday and Easter Monday off work so last weekend, I didn't get anything done except spending time with family. Anyway, in the last 4 days I did some catching up and wasn't going to do an update until the "Final Reveal". So, instead of waiting another week to finish her, and finding that there was a lot more to do, here's an unexpected "Build Update #5":


First, I started off by adding water to activate the previously airbrushed Hairspray so that I could add chipping to the plane, the engine cowlings, the propeller and the floats:














I then sealed the chipping with a gloss clear coat prior to decaling:







When that had dried, it was time to apply the decals, and in doing so, they went on great with no silvering:





I started with the port-side wing:







Followed by the Starboard-side wing:








I then moved onto the Port-side fuselage and added my own aeromaster after-market "Swaztika" decal to the rudder:








It was now time for the starboard side fuselage and rudder to be decaled:








And, finally, the floats were decaled:





After allowing time for the decals to set, I then sealed them in with a gloss clear coat prior to beginning weathering:





Before beginning the weathering though, I fitted/glued the engine cowling assembly onto the front of the fuselage:





I started my weathering with a pin-wash to the underside of the plane, to highlight the recessed panel lines. I used black oil paint mixed with a little yellow to make it dark brown and added mineral spirits to get a thin watery consistency to enable it to flow along the panel lines by way of capillary action:








When the underside was completed, I continued onto the top-side of the plane, then finished with the two floats:











I then taped along the sides of both floats and mixed a dark brown with a hint of green oil wash to create a water-line and staining on the sides of the floats:








I then moved onto creating my smoke, soot, burn stains from the two exhausts beneath the fuselage. I went a little heavy because I want this plane to look like a well used war-horse:





I then created a rusty/brown shade of oil wash and applied some oil, fuel and wear streaks and staining on various areas of the aircraft, including between panel lines to simulate accumulated dirt:






















I allowed the oils to dry over-night, then I sealed them all in with another Gloss Clear coat so that I can apply another filter wash and some more highlights on top of what has already been done:





When the clear coat was dry, I checked over the sub-assemblies to see what I needed to touch-up and decide what else I wanted to do to it, then dry-fitted the sub-assemblies together to see how she's looking so far and for your viewing pleasure






































Well, that's it for this update and the next one will be the "Final Reveal". To get to completion, I still have another filter to do, some highlighting, mask, paint and assemble the canopies, assemble the whole plane, add rigging to the support struts and a aerial antenna cable. Although it will be the "Final Reveal" of the plane, I will also be building a diorama throughout the year to put this model into.

I just completed her this weekend and will be uploading the "Final Reveal" details tomorrow. It's the "Final Reveal" for the plane build, but next, I will be building a diorama for the plane to go into.

Revell 1/32 Arado AR196A-3 Seaplane "Final Reveal- Part 1a":

Hello Guys,

Well, It's been just 3 days over a month since I started this build on March 17th and I've finally completed the first part of this planned project...the Revell 1/32 Arado AR196A-3 Seaplane! Yippeeeeee!!! My second part will be to put this into a diorama, of which I have yet to design, plan and acquire the products, materials and equipment necessary for me to accomplish my first ever diorama. I wouldn't normally bother with a diorama, but, we still have eight months left on this GB and I thought to myself..."You've never done a diorama and you have plenty of time to do one, so go for it, take the challenge"!

Anyway, enough waffling, the following images show what other steps I did on this model between my last "Build Update #5" to get it to this "Final Reveal".

First, I mixed a olive drab/green filter with oil paints and mineral spirits, using black, green and yellow oils, until I got a shade I liked. I then brushed it all over the plane to give it another tonal variation and wiped away some of it when it had dried, using cotton buds / Q-Tips;











I then created another filter that had a slimy greeny/brown tone to it, to apply on top of what I had previously applied on the floats, to create a water staining effect where the floats would be beneath the water-line:








When I was happy with how everything looked, I then sealed it all in with a flat/matte clear coat. As always, I used Model Masters Flat Clear Coat:




When that was dry, it was time for final assembly of all the sub-assemblies, along with all of the rigging, the aerial and antenna cable and the fiddly small parts such as light lenses, pitot tube, aileron counter-balance weights, door handles, rear machine gun and bombs.

First, the portside support strut and bomb were glued into place, followed by the starboard side wing bomb;







It was now time to assemble the floats and struts to the underside of the plane, along with making some rigging to fix between them. I therefore used the stretched sprue method by heating and stretching out sprue with a lighted candle, stretching the sprue until I got a thickness/diameter I was happy with;











When all the rigging was in place, I taped the plane to the floats to hold everything place until set:





I then moved onto fitting the folded back Portside wing by gluing it into place, then using some of the stretched sprue, I cut a length to use as the tie-cable between the wing and the side of the fuselage:





This was followed by fitting the upper wing fixing bracket that attaches the upper wing to the side of the fuselage beneath the cockpit:





The rigging and tie cables were then painted a steel color to finish them off;





Next, I wanted to scratch build a couple of steel tie-ropes/cables that go either side of the cockpit and fitted into the side of the fuselage. I used fuse wire and cut two equal lengths and twisted them together to simulate steel cable, then hooked over the ends and super-glued them into their respective locations. They were painted with a steel color before gluing them into their locations. The two black parts are the molded versions that I was replacing:











It was now time to mask the canopy, which consisted of 12 separate framed panels and each one having two sides for the inside and outside of the aircraft. Therefore, 24 windows to mask!





When that was done, I airbrushed a black base coat onto both sides;





When the base coat was dried, I airbrushed a light-olive drab onto the inside frames:





And when that had dried, I airbrushed the outside frames with RLM 73 Dunkelgrun;





And, finally, when that paint had dried, I airbrushed a coat of Model Master Flat Clear Coat on to seal the paint:





I allowed that to dry for 30 minutes before I removed the masking tape so I could check to see how the frames look, and, I thought that it had turned out okay;





Next, I removed all of the engine bay doors and cowlings that were temporarily held in place with putty while the aircraft was painted and weathered, so that now, I could fit them into their open positions to display the engine compartments;











Before I fitted the canopy sections into place, I painted and fitted the gun-sight onto the top of the instrument panel:





After this had set, the canopy sections were put into place, the aerial was fitted and I made and fitted antenna wires using 0.010" thick EZ-Line. I then fitted the light lenses, pitot tube and counterbalance weights beneath the wings.

I'm playing around with a few dio ideas and need to do some sketching and then decide on the design I'm going for. I have 4 ideas presently floating around my head. We'll see....still 8 months to go to get the dio done!

Good look with your "Russian Front" dio...I expect that will have a very chilly appearance to it! You might feel "snowed" under with your first dio attempt!

Revell 1/32 Arado AR196A-3 Seaplane "Final Reveal- Part 1b- COMPLETED!!":

Hello Guys,

Following on from the "Final Reveal - Part 1a" post of yesterday, I assembled the canopy onto the fuselage, attached an EZ-Line antenna, glued all the light lenses into their locations, glued the pitot tube and counter-balance weights onto the underside of the wings, along with door handles on the canopy frame sections, and, fitted the engine cowlings and engine bay doors in their open positions to complete her!! So, here are the "Final Reveal" images of my completed Arado AR196A-3...enjoy the views!



























































































































Well, there she is. I hope you enjoyed the views as much as I enjoyed building this fabulous kit that is extreme value for money!

Now, I have to start designing and planning part two of this build, which will be the diorama to set this plane into. I have 4 ideas presently floating around my head, but first, I need to sketch them all out and calculate my material requirements and costs before deciding which design idea I go with. I'm a little anxious as I've never built a diorama before and have no clue where to start, so, I guess watching some fellow modelers "How To" vids are my next step!

If my plane turns out half as good i still call it a star in my collection
It looks really nice and then tons of modellers say Revell isn't all that good
I made a He 111 last year from them and i was extremly suprised by that kit and even the decals wich in my opinion where competing with cartograph
I may have missed it but are you planning on building a base of some sort for this

If your plane is treated the same way you did that massive crane/train build thingymajiggy, then you'll have no problems!

When modelers say Revell are no good, I believe they might be referring to the kits that are made by Revell USA, which actually are molded in China and are really poor quality. No disrespect to Chinese molding and manufacturing, I just think the people at Revell USA responsible for sourcing Chinese suppliers were crap at identifying quality manufacturers. As a Director of Engineering for a large Injection Molding company, before I retired in 2013, one of my jobs was to identify quality Asian resources that we partnered with, which required travelling to these countries for two weeks at a time, meeting with the owners and executive staff, then checking out their machinery, processes, standards, quality control, assembly and finishing capabilities. Two in Shenzhen, China, one in Singapore and one in Tokyo. When Identified, I was responsible for managing the manufacturing we contracted out to these companies/partners.
If you buy a Revell kit, go for a recent (within last 10 years) Revell Germany (GmbH) kit....superior engineering, as this kit is, akin to Tamiya. I had zero issues with this kit and the details are awesome, molded parts are crisp and clean. I've bought two more Revell GmbH kits that I'm looking forward to building now, both 1/32 scales; their BF109G-10 Erla and the Spitfire Mk.IIa.

I am planning on building a diorama for this plane, as we still have 8 months left in this GB. I have 4 ideas in my head what I'd like to do, s, I have sketch/design them out and calculate material requirements and costs, then make a decision.

Martin , i'm not going to praise you , as my opinion is that you make such a good job on all your builds, specially the paint job , and I like a lot all your yt videos and threads here , again on this one you did such a good build , really a TOP shelf build mate ! i must say you have done a fantastic job on your build of the arado 196 and yes i must admit that the revell kits in the past 10 years until present are far better than the old ones.
i notice that your going to build the spitfire mkii and the me109 earla ...both are superb kits but there is two areas you have to look out for on the me109. first the wing join is a bit dodgy and the under carrige is very weak and prone to break easily.
the spitfire is a superb kit but the centre under cooler is shaped wrong and the decals are good but you will get silvering so i would recommend you buy a aftermarket sheet.
otherwise than that you will enjoy them as i did
