I've never actually tried preshading before. I sorta just paint everything black. I'm curious to see how yours turns out. Looks pretty good so far.

I did it on the AS90 as well, but after layers of varnish, camo stripes, wash etc the effect is somewhat lost. I have done it on planes and it works well, especially on lighter coloured planes.

the Pre-shading is very subtle ! NICE !

Yeah, what he ^ said lol. I don't know him personally, but he asked if I would do a shout out in my next vid, so was happy to oblige.

I got some more paint down last night on the Challenger. I think (apart from the roadwheels) that the basecoat is now done on everything. I am thinking about adding some Vallejo Dark Sand to the Sand Yellow I have used as the base colour to then lighten some parts, but I will check how this looks against the AS90 first in terms of colour. Its not strictly correct for BATUS vehicles, their sand colour is a touch lighter, but I want this to more match my AS90 than anything.





Next step will be to get the camo stripes on. However that will entail bluetacking all the side skirt sections on, and the fuel drums on the back etc to ensure pattern continuity across the vehicle. They can then come off again as I can't get the tracks on if I glue the skirts on, and if I glue the fuel drums on then it blocks painting access to the details on the rear of the hull.

That pre-shading has a good affect on the kit. Can't wait to see more!!

So tonights antics were sort of ok, but also sort of not.....

So I got the camo airbrushed on without too much trouble, but I have yet to figure out the proper psi and paint consistency to enable to me to freehand airbrush camo without getting splatter and overspray. I have also noticed that the paint dries very very quickly on the needle of this airbrush and builds up.

Coen - any tips on how to stop that? I have Vallejo Retarder Medium, but I don't think it works very well.

And the reason I now need to mask some bits with blue tack and go over the camo edges again.....



Bloody overspray and fingerprints! Going to have to sand this bit back a little when its dry and do it again. Now you can see why in the end preshading isn't that noticeable! All the extra coats fixing mistakes etc.

I am happy with the general camo, just need to spend some time over the weekend sorting out the edges. I don't want them hard edged, so will get the blue tack out and sort it.

Fairly thin paint, and and 25 psi is how I do it, thats with a H&S Evo though.

With that brush and all my other badgers they work best at lower pressures than others. I ran that one with 12-15psi most of the time with a 60% paint to 40% thinner ratio.
That was with model master acrylics thinned with x20a.
I never had a problem with it at those settings.

Fingerprints aside, looking good mate, ya gotta love the BATUS camo scheme

Now you understand how I got my opinion on painting 3-tone NATO camo scheme lol. Sad about the fingerprints, but at least it's fixable.

I think an evenings effort should get the camo sorted out, meaning I can move on to painting details and pin washing etc.

I need to go through and blue tack mask the camo edges and re-do them to get a neater edge than I had, as well as fixing some overspray etc.

are you not afraid of leaving glue residue with the BLUE TACK mask ???? just the name freaks me out ... don't you mean Silly Putty ?? Blue tack is pretty hard core stuff...

Don't know if you can get silly putty here in the UK? Blue tack has worked ok for me before. I might have another go first of touching things up freehand, most of it is ok, its just the last camo stripe on the turret that needs some work.

I only used that stuff to hold posters on walls... and its is stiff as hell.

I used it to do the camo on my Mosquito with no trouble. Its quite low tack really, and luckily didn't seem to leave greasy marks, and if it did, they were hidden under the varnish coat.

Will keep you all updated. I think if I can get some work done tonight I will get a video update done as well.

nive preshading buddy

I've used both blue tack and silly putty with out any trouble Norm. The tack has never lifted a part or paint yet, and I don't use primer.
It might be a brand issue, I just use the cheap crap they sell at Sobey's (a grocery chain in Canada).

Gav use white tack as opposed to blue tack as its not oil based so won't leave any residue at all, and it's the same price as blue tack.

I have some white tack, but its so used that its uber sticky now, and its more hassle than its worth to use it! Got some blue tack that didn't leave any marks when I tried it on the Chally, so if I need to use anything I will use that.

Well I have some leaks and over-spray "touch ups" to do on the T-90 and I will give this a "try" versus trying to mask with Tape again... Hard to follow Camo lines and all...

Since I never done it.... there will be a steep learning curve ! but I welcome the new technique addition to my Arsenal !

No no.... It's all going to be OK!

Ok so I thought it was high time I got back to this and try to clear it off the "WIP" shelf and get it ready for the finished shelf.

I got the airbrush out and sorted out the overspray issues etc and neatened up some other areas. I then painted in some of the various details on the hull and turret, got the wheels painted and got a coat of Klear on. As I type this I am pin washing the tank, which I will then clean up. I then need to mask off and paint the black panels BATUS vehicles have for their ID numbers. Then decals, and a matt coat and the tank itself should be done. I then need to paint the tracks.

Cheers guys. Coen, go on go on! This is a lovely kit to build. One day I will get it again and actually build it up with all the extra armour etc and paint it up in a desert scheme.

So more progress.

The black areas on the side skirts and turret were masked and sprayed.




BATUS vehicle carry these to make the vehicle ID's easy to see. I don't want to overload the vehicle with markings, so have used some decals from the kit for the turret markings, but left the hull ones blank. Looking through references, it seems that its not uncommon for this to occur.

Some aerials were added using stretched sprue


Then the model was matt coated (literally just had enough matt varnish left to finish the model) and the lenses etc were all uncovered.


The orange beacon was painted using Tamiya Clear Orange and then stuck on


Exhaust staining


Dusting of sand colour over the lower hull etc

No pictures just now, but I got a coat of primer on the outside of the tracks last night, so tonight I will get the rest done then perhaps give them their paint (just a bit of a metallic look to the track connector ends, and the guide teeth, then a dusting all over).

I got the uniform on one of the crew done. I am not 100& happy with it, but tbh you won't see most of it anyway when its in place on the model. I will get the 2nd one done and show you them both together.
