The Spark rollers makes it look really mean

I was able to get some work done on the SPARK mine roller this weekend. And with that I have an announcement to make

I FINISHED ALL THE COMPONENTS FOR THE MINE ROLLER!!!!!

That's right folks, I the only thing that is left to do is attach the wheels and the frame for the wheels.

My camera isn't good enough to pick up all the detail for the mine roller so here are the tires. You may notice that there's that Legend has provided 10 wheels when the kit only requires 8, not sure why but I'll find a purpose.




That's it for now, progress will start in the foreseeable future.

I'm hoping to see some paint on this fella soon. That'll look really cool all weathered up.

It'll get there soon. I've gotten some free time now and I plan to ease back into modelling and readjust to my new schedule I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do. I could do:

-Just plain desert tan
-3-tone NATO
-3-tone NATO w/ desert doors
-Desert tan with green hood

So many choices but so little time.

I like the thre tone NATO myself.
I've never seen the ones with the mismatched doors.

Since I got started getting back into the grove this is my workbench...

That's my OCD kicking in.

And its my inner carpenter, I was always taught to clean up any dust or any shavings so I don't slip in my workspace. I always organize my tools so I don't loose them and so I don't have to go spelunking when I need one.

Also I heard that resin dust is very hazardous to ones health, so I vacuum up after anything major.

Best way to work imo, i couldn't work on an untidy desk, i clear up after every major step in a build and always at the end of the day

I want to make a video like the scenes from M*A*S*H where you just see the doctors face as he tells the nurse what tools to give him.

Sprue cutters......Xacto knife......TET.......Putty!!!!! Quick I need 20cc's of putty or we're gonna lose this kit!

That would be awesome, you would need a large vault with different putty types.

Oh yeah... resin dust causes cancer.
So cleaning it up is really a good idea... but wear a mask when you're working on it and when you're cleaning up.
Or it could be a pine box for you.

Update of my lackadaisical progress:

I painted the tires and I put the base coat on the frame.

I still have to drybrush the frame so I'll post that picture up later when it's completed. Until that's done I've painted the tires black then drybrushed some Middle East Asphalt from LifeColor. This combo looks spectacular to an amateur like me.

I still have to weather the tires but I'll wait until I decide what setting I'm going to put them in. If you don't know tires look different if they're driving on pavement, if they're driving offroad, or if they're transitioning from one to the other.

If you guys have any questions just ask and I'll try to describe it and try to offer some visual aid.





In this picture you can see how the drybrushing really brings out the details of the tire. Tires aren't just black. The LifeColor paint gives highlights and makes each word in GOODYEAR and WRANGLEP stand out. This photo could be better, the lighting is crap, but I believe it displays what it needs to.

really nice I really like the extras your adding to it.. Tanks for the ideas I think... Yes the new tires u got r the way to go. I just got to remember them when I want them.. cant wait to see more pics

Great build log and commentary gave me a laugh along the way although i wouldn't get away with a mine roller 1:1 scale somehow i think she might notice it , im slowly realizing how much modeling has changed over the years and how much of aftermarket parts are available.

It's nice that a lot of new kits are putting in vinyl tires in, but that's not really good enough for me in terms of military vehicles. In normal civilian cars you're suppose to inflate so your tires look round. I keep my jeep's tires at 40psi for when I'm driving on the road.

Military vehicles are known for being off road so they deflate tires in order to gain traction by increasing the surface area of the tire. This means that most military vehicles in theatre have a recognizable sag and bulge. The rivet counter in me has a fit if my kits have the perfect round tires in a combat zone. Until manufacturers mold tires with the sag in them, I'm going to keep buying resin sagged ones.

Glad I could entertain someone with my antics. I'm lucky for starting modelling now when I can spoil myself on all of the goodies that the market has to offer. I don't believe that EVERY kit needs to have the addition of an aftermarket set, but being as I want to make my kits unique and special to myself I buy aftermarket stuff when I need to.

The dry brush colour is right on the money.
I love that copyright law even invades model tire production... Wranglep?

They do it with panzer IV tyres too. Continental is spelled wrong because they can't get the rights.

Superb work and as coen has said the tires look spot on...love the mine clearer thingy on the front will look amazing when its all painted up and ready to roll

Thanks Coen, you're too kind. The only problem with the tire I foresee is when weathering. Either it will cover up all the details or it won't look right with the color. Only time will tell.

So with this new thread about another humvee I've gotten all hot and bothered about my humvee that still needs to be completed.

So I got to work on the SPARK mine roller and made some major progress.

Warning: the two wheel hubs are backwards according to the instructions, but I've seen plenty of pictures that show the mine roller both ways.

My work station:






I used a popsicle stick to make sure that both of the hubs are straight.









These are the wheels and the axle for the roller. All of these are just dryfitted.







Now here's a jig that I made way too complicated. I stacked two kit boxes right next to each other, I then had an audio book case next to a stone slab that I use for cutting PE. I used it to try and glue the roller at its future level. I decided against it in order to attach the hubs.

that looks cool, the mine rollers look like one fiddly kit to put together, I was looking at on stage to get a few sets for my stryker but resin kits scare me lol
