Hey guys,

I have done some weathering tests for the wood deck this week. I have tried 2 variants; one using Ultimate Dark Dirt mixed with white glue on untreated basswood (left sample) and variant with gloss coated wood and the Dark Dirt and wood glue mix on top of that (right sample).

I prefer the right sample. The bare wood soaks up too much wash so it looks like weathered oak or something - it's not the effect that I'm looking for. I want the natural wood color as a base and use wash, pigments and paint to create the effects on top of that.

Hi!

After some indecision and running back and forth I have finally started preparing the wood deck for variant where I glosscoat the wood before I put on wash and other weathing products. It turned out that building this wood deck is not much different from installing solid wood flooring (only the scale differs ofc), so I started by sanding the surfaces, put on a generous coat of Aqua Gloss. After it dried I sanded it again with a fine sandpaper - because the glosscoat raises the wood fibres and make the surface coarse. After that I applied another coat of Aqua Gloss which will dry and cure until tomorrow.



I have also started working on the base. The box and the tiedowns have been primed.



I then painted the tiedowns with XF-84 Dark Iron and the base with Tamiya XF-26 Deep Green with a couple of drops of XF-4 Yellow and XF-2 White. I did some postshading as well to add some variety to the surfaces. I will also play around with rust chipping and oil dot filters to treat the surfaces even more.

The green colour is one of the cammo colors used on IJN Junyo in the beginning of the war, I think it looks awesome. Much more interesting that the traditional IJN Grey variants (Note: I will use Grey for the elevator floor on the deck, though!)

So this weekend I did the first part of the weathering of the wood deck.

The grooves have been filled with a mix of white glue and Vallejo Black Brown, I tried to use washes first but I couldnt get a dark enough tone, but it turned out that Vallejo paint mixes perfectly with white glue (Tamiya does not btw). I have also used Ultimate Dark Dirt and different pigments. I will probably add some fuel and oil stains on the deck.
I'm very pleased with the tiedowns but the dashed centerline could be improved - maybe I'll do something about it later...









The elevator floor have been have been painted with XF-75 IJN Grey (Kure Arsenal). I will do some chipping of the front edge and weather the platform with pigments as well.

Hey Guys!

This build is finally on the homestretch - it's been fun and I have learned a lot about the Zero. I will definitely get back to this aircraft and build a 1/48 scale sometime in the future. You may wonder why I spend so much effort on a 1/72-scale kit; it's all about testing new ideas without having the pressure of failing an expensive kit with lots of aftermarket. Besides; 1/72 don't take up so much space on the shelf and I enjoy build them as well.

Ok, nuff rambling - back to the build (it's not finished yet and talking will not finish it for me)....
I wasn't happy with the XF-75 on the elevator floor, too dark. However, I decided to mask some spots before I coated it with a lighter grey color.



The result might look a little weird, but I will remove the sharp edges with washes. Maybe applying the mask fuild with a sponge had been a better idea tbh.



I have added Ultimate Dark Dirt wash and I will also put on some Ultimate Concrete to get a lighter tones on the surface.



The metal base have been rustchipped, trying to recreate rust deposits under the paint. I did that by first adding some streaks of Mr Surfacer (to get a 3D effect) which I sponge-painted with 4 different Vallejo rust tones and then partially coated with XF-26 Deep Green. The rust streaks where done with Ultimate Rust and Ultimate Mud.



I have also applied vertical streaks using an black oilwash (artist oilpaint + odourless turpentine).



So... the final stage is to glue deck and base together with 2-component epoxy glue - and apply a lot of pressure!



Next step is to setup the photo-booth and the DSLR and try to get a couple of decent pictures.
