Yep, certainly the biggest and baddest beast to come up against. Having a 128mm gun does tend to render the opposition's argument irrelevant!

With such a large surface area, there's room for the detail. The rest of the weathering process should be fun, although I'm beginning to shudder a little re the winter wash plan. I'll be watching Paul's Ultimate tutorial before I even open the bottle!

Still a ways to go yet but the Big Kitty is getting there.

Applied Ultimate Dark Dirt today.



I did the wheels and rear panel too but the pics were naff

Then spent a solid hour wiping it off. Had a bit of a mare with the hooks for the spare tracks. Damaged 3 with my over zealous wiping off of the wash. Managed to save 2 but will have to 'fake' the 3rd one as it went to sprue heaven and will not be returning.




Happy with the wash. I was desperate to make sure the yellow camo didn't darken too much and I think I succeeded in retaining its lustre.






A light tan filter is next but its late in the day now. I'll get back on it at some time tomorrow.

I got stuck into the tracks today. Following Coen's guide I painted them black then applied a spray of rust then finished off with a metallic dry brushing. I took pics as I went so here's the detail.

Primed



Base coat Tamiya black



I've painted tracks dark grey previously so this looked REALLY black to me. Started to get a bit nervy at this point. Decided to press on though.

On with the rust



I used AK Interactive dark Rust and it went on like a dream. I was careful not to over do it as I wanted the rust to appear on top of the black rather than totally blocking it out. When I finished though, I still felt it was too bright. With only the dry brushing to go, I thought I had dropped a clanger because here I have tracks that I already think are too bright and I'm about to dry brush them which will surely make them lighter.

Thankfully I had some Steel metal coat which isn't too bright and the result is really pleasing (to me anyway), somehow it has degraded the lustre of the rust and I've ended up with something that looks ok.



What I'm really pleased with though are the spare track links for the hull. I over did it a bit with the dry brushing but reduced the effect by brushing on some thinner and lifting some of the dry brushing off. They'll get some specific rust streaks later on but for now I'm happy.



Here's how the tracks look on the vehicle.






I also glossed the hull again today after the Ultimate wash so its all ready for dot filters tomorrow. After that it will be time for the whitewash.

Got some more done today. Tried dot filters for the first time. Result is reasonable although I may need to refine my technique. I think I went too heavy with the thinner brushing and that has caused some streaking. It looks ok but I will be better prepared next time.

Started on the lower plate of the forward hull.





Then worked my way round the rest of the hull





Spare tracks on. They and the rest of the hull will get some rust streaks before the whitewash goes on.



Glued the tracks on, happy with how they look against the hull. The wheels are a bit clean at the moment but they and the rear plate will have a very heavy pastel wash soon. They also will not be whitewashed as I'm only going to apply it to the upper hull, front and back deck.




So the whitewash is just around the corner now.

The big Kitty has got its winter coat on!

And as I put the Ultimate wash on, my first thought is - why oh why did I bother with all the work on the camo, the chipping, the washes? Its all gone!



Its only when its dry and I start to work on it that it starts to make sense. The detail begins to come through and it encourages me to keep going, unearthing more of the hull colours as the winter wash comes away. This is the final result, also with mud added to the wheels, the rear plate and a darkening down of the gun (undecided on that one at the mo).




The more I got into it, the more I could see how it worked, using a wet bud on the edges to remove completely and a dry one just to reduce it back on the flat sections - that's code for I don't know what I'm doing but hey, fake it till you make it!














It needs a matt varnish then its more rust streaks and more chipping. I'm trying to portray the KT as having worn its winter gear for some time, hence there would be some rusting and chips on top. I may add a touch of light tan to the matt varnish just to 'off' the white. Don't know yet.

Giving it a winter wash is also a way to get rid of the white streaks you mentioned in your other thread

Thanks guys. Its been a learning process for me too. Trying to follow Coen's guides and learning from various YT vids as I go. Since the last update I did the rusting and chipping so she's all done now. I will post some pics to finish off later.

I'm not really planning a dio although I do have a primitive Bastogne themed snowscape I could put it on. Its reserved for a Sherman with a few US infantry running alongside but if I tilt the gun down and open the rear hatches fully it could look abandoned I suppose. That way I could still put the troops on it.

It would be a cheat but who's judging!

I tried it but in a case of life imitating art, the JT was too big. It looked too big for the size of the base but beyond that it was too big for the snow road I had made! The tracks were too wide

I'm trying out dot colour rendering for the first time on my 1/16 Sturm Tiger and I've got similar results to you (used to much white) but I think it'll work out ok (I hope) but using oils has so much promise that I'm determined to persever with them.

As to your Jagd, I think it looks absolutely brilliant

As for the oils, I completely agree, its a new exciting medium for me too. I grew up on Humbrol enamels then moved onto acrylics only last year when I bought an airbrush. Now I'm squeezing tubes of oil paints! Its great having all this stuff at your fingertips.

As for my dot filtering streak problem, along with less white Paul B advised I needed more thinner on my brush in future so I'll be careful to remember that. Next up for me is a fw190 but after that I'm back in armour with a Sherman E8 so more opportunities for trying to be Picasso!

I was really pleased with the winter wash. Scared the hell out of me when I first put it on but I think it came out ok in the end.

Its a superb kit. Goes together like a dream and the link and length tracks are just beautiful to work with.

Nice work It sure does take a bit guts to cover all weathering with white wash, but it sure make sense in the end. Layering man, layering.

I couldn't back out once I said I'd winterise the big Kitty! Still, it was great from a processes point of view as I tried to follow Coen's guide to weathering. Next time I plan to winterise a vehicle I'll miss a few steps as they're not necessary.

I've got a Sherman easy 8 in the stash so that will have all the processes done on it and I definitely will not be winterising that baby! Then I've got a Nashorn which I will winterise so the hopefully the lesson learned on the big Kitty will be helpful going forward.

Thanks Guys very kind. I was very pleased with the whitewash. My sister likes it too. Whenever she comes round she says, 'That's my favourite, its lovely' not quite the effect I was going for but I'll take the positive reinforcement! LOL.
