So received my gundam from Japan Cool in Leeds. Here's my progress so far


Nice Box art


Looking inside the box beautifully moulded parts ( no flash at all).

All colour coded and instructions in Japanese only but easy enough to follow.


It was too tempting not to start so I did. Only equipment used pair of snips and a couple of sanders.


I was amazed at how easily the parts fitted together


So far an easy and enjoyable experience well recommended.

Well i have just ordered a Gouf custom and a Aile strike ver.RM master grade kits
Now i don't know anything about the subject but i have seen a bunch of examples so i thought lets give it a try
Too bad the Sazabi i wanted was too expensive and out of stock
But i am in

Awesome! Always a pleasure, Mark. Yeah, Sazabis can be pricey...I have a powerful need for one. Gouf Custom is an awesome kit from everything I've seen.

I just looked at the Gouf box art
So i can't tell how nice it is or isn's but it has a huge gun so that is good
But i wanted to try building a couple after seeing so really nicely painted and weathered builds
From what i have seen they look a bit toy like straight from the box but that offers a nice challenge to make them look a bit realistic (if possible)

Ya, they're based on animation, so a "straight" build yields a kind of toy-like look. Part of the fun is adding weathering and whatnot to make them appear real, or going the other way and making them even more outlandish.

Those are some cool examples
I saw one a while back that was converted to a samurai style figure wich looked pretty nice and even some with african tribe style war paints
But i think i will keep it a bit more basic

Oh and one more example of throwing a mobile suit into history, so to speak:

It wasn't the one you linked
The one i saw was a bit more refined in terms of painting
The line work was really fine and i couldn't tell if it was brush painted or masked and sprayed

No worries man! Been thinking about proposing this for weeks, yet I started one a week ago anyway

This won't be a super serious GB with judging and all that, just a door prize for a build thread + reveal thread with a finished kit. If you can, hang on until the 21st to continue and set up your build thread, otherwise you can always grab a second one and continue with this one

So are we ok to set up a build thread and show what we will be building and any ideas we may possibly be doing with the kit?

If you want to post pics of the kit you're going to do and share your plan here then go for it! But wait on the build thread for now, the purpose of this thread is to get a head count for interest so I can ask Paul and Lee for a sub-forum.

If we have enough people then we can get our own like the Summer Sci-fi SiG and you can open a build thread there

Right now we're on track to earn a spot, and I'll make the official request of them once the poll ends (December 14) OR we hit say 35 at any point before then. If it works like last time then they'll open the sub-forum on the day (21st).

Wow this one has really snowballed since the last time I stopped by

I like the idea of opening it up to all kinds of mechs and other robots - might have to look at an AT-ST as well as the robots... I don't need more stash, I don't need more stash, I don't need more stash... I already bought an extra robot... arrrghhh!

I also like the idea of running until April mainly because I'm unlikely to be able to get anything started until the other side of the New Year if I'm honest.

Hi Jason if I come out of retirement and buy a kit may I enter with my hairy sticks and my paint by numbers chart approach.

ive built that same kit myself does look nice once done , and its great as its one of the newer kits so has the inner frame work...

this time I will buy a more better quality gundam and actually finish him the way I wanted, I really wanted to do a german solder but now I am going to make a German ww1 sturmtropper I PROMISE

did an order from banzai hobby last week so hoping that will be here next few weeks:( as got plans to build one of them for this and hopefully something else as well

righty oh, im up for this one as i intimated on FB. But, i aint got no gundams and am completely lost in this field...up the wazooo without the appropriate means of propulsion so to speak.
Ive got the revell 1:6 Cylon Raider kit if that would be eligible but i dont think its quite the same thing really.

so that being said ive looked around a bit and think something along the freedom/unicorn gundam side of things looks pretty awesome, tho the Stein up above looks badass too. Kit complexity would have to be Master grade type level just cause of parts count. I like the build just as much as i enjoy the painting.
heres where i ask for your help, fire me over some suggestions and links either here or on FB and ill take a look. Price can be anywhere near the £50 mark but thats flexible. I look forward to seeing what you come up with, im open to building pretty much anything.

It's in Korean, but you can click the tags at the top of the menus to switch it to English. Left side is what's in the box, the right side is assembled kits.

Freedom 2.0 This one is less than 6 months old and a fabulous update for details and articulation. (Have this one myself)



Jesta If you're into the grunt/special forces thing. There's a "Jesta Cannon" version as well with armor etc.





Geara Doga I push this one a lot, but it's a fantastic design for the baddies with a WWII feel.



RX-0 Unicorn There's a ton of versions for this one, Destroy Mode, red frame, green frame, the Banshee, Banshee Norn, etc. They're all different in some way.



I could fill the site with recommendations, honestly. Do you prefer grunts (the cannon fodder/storm trooper), the hero (Gundam itself), the baddies, the weirdos?

Weirdos like a Ball Ver.ka?

I've not, but I imagine he's mixed up some colors to be ready to go out the bottle for some of the kits (like what you'd find in a MIG Panzer colors kit or something). Otherwise if you want "accurate" colors from the call out you'll be doing a bunch of mixing. Bandai lists Mr Hobby colors only, so matching can get tricky.

If you're going to go the custom route and paint it up as something else, just whatever you feel comfortable with works.

I've had the kit for probably...15 years? Been looking for a reason to build it! It's untouched except for I did open the bags...is that ok?

Some help with Bandai translations: color guide, symbols guide.

There's plenty of cheaper options. High Grade (HG) and non-grade Iron Blooded Orphans (IBO) kits are in the $10-$40 range with most $10-$25. There's even some Real Grades (RG) around the $20-$25 mark and those are like 1/144 versions of Master Grades. Have a look at some, there's so, so many.

Or that Got a couple 1/35 Patlabors, but that 1/48 looks pretty slick, too.

I'll take a close up and post it here. I have a translation app on my phone but it doesn't work all the time...made for some good laughs tho!

I'm still amazed how toy like these things look when you build them

Question: I have a lot of Gundam kits already assembled with the intent to paint them later. Would they qualify as an entry or does it have to be a completely unstarted kit? I don't mind either of the two but the first option gives me more...errr...options. :p

Just catching up on four or five days of ISM forum updates including this SiG, so I promise I'll get to it today. And that goes for that translation I've worked on for the EVA as well...and some other questions asked along the way!
