So I've gotten back to work on this big bad boy, and made a few vids.
I have a hard time trying to remember whether or not I've posted it in the spots it's supposed to go.
So it's a bit late. I have an awful memory for things like that because of the PTSD.

just a question: why build an early(er) version from this kit?
is it that you like that type better or something else
but i like the video's it is what got me into buying this beast
also i like that you point out several detail in the design that need attention

Good question Mark,
Mostly I wanted to see if I could do the conversion.
I also like that version of the Tiger I the most.
I like the look of them with all the gear on them and the old cupola with out any zimmerit.
I also don't have a Das Reich Tiger I yet.

I should be getting back to work on her soon. Once I finish Blue Thunder and the ISherman I plan on concentrating some time on the Tiger I.

I am planning a dio Mark yes.
I have a rough idea as to what I'm going to do, but nothing solid yet. It will be big though.
Grassy field with maybe a pair of panzer grenadiers running along side the tank. I'm not sure yet.
I think that Hamilkar is planning one too.

Me too... it's sitting on the floor of my cave because I don't have a table big enough for it to sit on. With all the extra stuff that I've bought for it, it weighs a tonne so the box is falling apart now haha.
Time for me to build this pretty lady and get her on display.

i don't know of you still looking for some hatches for the driver and radio operator but i got a link from Jaycub on a german company that makes working hatches and they are not that expensive maybe you should check that one the link is on my built log
they also have other stuff for tigers in this scale

So as promised, I've dug the big kitty out from hibernation and she's back on the bench. I've been working steady on her for at least the last day and the Mojo has returned.
I've even mocked up part of a diorama with her.
There won't be any videos on her I'm afraid, but I'll be lambasting you with photos as I go.
I don't remember where I was or what I was doing in the last video update, as I haven't watched it (I don't watch my own videos haha).
So I just opened the box and started working on the biggest thing that I found. haha.
That happened to be the PE grills on the engine deck.
That may sound easy, but the grills on a Tiger's deck are actually two pieces not one. There's two layers.
The outer layer is the one that most PE sets offer, the inner, more fine layer, I had to source myself.
I have a small pile of PE screens that I save for making engine grills, so that was put to use.

Then I decided that I was also going to replace the moulded on crew hatches for the radio operator and driver with a pair of metal ones that I bought last year.
The two that needed to be removed were made from very thick plastic and didn't go quietly. I had intended to leave part of the old hatch to simulate the small rim that encircles the opening for the hatch, but one of them didn't play according to the rules and .... poof. I had to try to replace it... not so well. Mr Surfacer and Tamiya Putty to the rescue. The other ring I saved.

I also removed the jack block on the upper hull next to radioman's hatch, as I and replacing it with real wood and PE straps.

Next I replaced the Mid production commander's cupola with an Early production dustbin one that's appropriate for this version of the tank.
Also... that sounded easier than it really was. I had to remove the small locator ring that was on the turret roof for the kit supplied cupola. Then I had to scratch build a new base for the cupola as the older dustbin versions had a welded ring that they sat on that was 2 or 3 inches thick. The metal replacement cupola that I bought didn't have one.
I had to cut the ring from a thick piece of styrene sheet... twice. It wasn't thick enough so I had to laminate it. My hands are not happy with me now... sore..

I'm not going to worry about interior detail as yet, because I don't think that you will see it once the commander is in the turret.
In the end I managed to install it without too much drama.

Then I installed the rear hull plate... that didn't fit very well and I'll have to get out the putty and styrene strips to do some work on the gaps back there.

Then the bow plate... no fit issues there.

Then I put the upper and lower hulls together and glues the living piss out of it.
That's when I discovered the idea for the diorama and began the basic mock up... I took pictures so I wouldn't forget. haha.

These two dudes are having a chat about what is about to happen while the boss is listening in...

The company CO is standing on the upper deck with his signal pistol about to launch something... a march order... attack order... whatever.

So that's where she sits now... I'm hoping to get a tonne of work done on her this weekend as the wife and kids are away.

Been waiting for your next update - and how you were going to "earlier-fy" the HB early/mid/late Tiger into shape...

Ive been scratching my head working out which model Tiger I I'll do for my build and been stuck into research (using mainly the books you recommended I think in your first video?) and made a hash at a spreadsheet detailing the month by month changes to the production cycle, e.g when did the new starter plate start, when did they change to cast ice cleats on tracks etc etc

The HB is a real conundrum in that respect - bits everywhere in the production cycle!

Looking forward to more - I need to actually build a 1/35 Tiger first to get my head around the beast, only built Panthers and Stugs so far.

You're right about this HB kit being a mixed bag of modifications.
Its a hack and slash build for no matter what version of the Tiger that you want to build. The basic hull and turret dimensions are good enough to make a go an most of the variants though.
So it's a nice cheap way to get started I think.
It's a crap load of work though.
I agree that starting with the 1/35 tigers is a good way to get your feet wet as they say. The tiger doesn't look very complicated, but rivet counters and all the tiny modifications that were made in the production series can make building one a real research headache.
I'm sure that you'll do fine though, it's all about the patience. Take all the time that you need to do the research that you want, make notes. Get a fellow modeller to check your choices before you implement them (a second opinion if you will). Then just start... and take your time with it.

I know a bit more about the KT but i don't know that much about the tiger except that they where big , heavy and came in 4 basic production runs

Another day of slogging away at the big kitty.
I managed to finish with the upper/lower hull assembley. She's all buttoned up now.
All of the major sub-assemblies are added as well... the cupola, turret pistol port, feifel assembly parts (mine will be in the partially disassembled state. Feifels and the smoke mine launchers were in the process of being deleted from the tiger at the time of this tiger's service)
I also started working on the tow cables.
I filled all the locator holes on the hull and replaced the texture with Mr. Surfacer 1000.

So here's the shots ...

The loader's escape hatch has been added.

The engine hatch props are now scratch build...

The first tow cable is built and the locator holes have been filled...

All of the white metal except the barrel has been painted with Mr surfacer 1000 and textured with stippling.

The last few days I've been busy working on the little flower class corvette for my little brother so I haven't been doing a lot to this the last while.
But before I shifted gears I did do a few little things.

I started working on the fine details like the tools and fixtures.

Not much drama, just a few modifications and additions. A bit dirty, but I'm happy with it.

I've replaced the kit offered barrel cleaning rods with micro dowels that I bought at my local craft shop and scratch built the mountings and brackets from styrene and some PE I had.

I totally modified the towing cable and C-clamps system. I cut off and replaced the styrene cable with some home made cable. Then I removed the moulded on bracket that was on the C-clamp, cut the locking bracket off and hooked the towing eye on with the U-bolt. Then I reattached the locking bracket and called it done.

I moved the exhaust fan armoured cover to the correct position and rebuilt the base from styrene.

Then I totally scratch built the entire antenna as the kit never included one.

Then I scratch built the left over remains of the feifel system that remained on the engine deck, as I'm modelling this vehicle as one that is in the middle of her modification.

I made a milliput rag and added it to the engine deck only because I had a bit of it left over and didn't want to waste it. I'm considering leaving the jack on the engine deck as stowage as well. Just to make things different.

I added the bow machine gun and realised that the kit doesn't include the ball mount for the gun. That sucked. Scratch building rounded surfaces is a pain in the ass. So that's why I had the milliput out. Once it dried I shaved it into a more rounded shape and hollowed out the muzzle.

I also dressed up the only headlight that is included in the kit. Since there was only one I made it look like the other one was knocked off due to battle damage.

I've done some more... but I'll post that in the next bit.

Im stitching to start mine - I finally have sorted out a subject - one of the 8 ex-Meyergruppe June 43 models attached to the 508 Battalion that participated in Anzio in 1944: "von Eschnapur"

Learning so much from your build here - as mine will have similar but not all features of yours (I can get away with the cleated tracks for example and a few other things)

I'm going to start some 1/35 kits first - do a 504 Battalion in Italy (late model) as Ive not yet done a Tiger!

Theres a chap in Japan selling sprues from the 1/16 Tamiya Tiger kit - around about $20USD each - Im sure there was some spare headlights in there?

Just before I went away last weekend I started working on the track changing cable. The one that came with the kit is too short and was underscale so it needed some attention... I went for total replacement.
I had a kit for the PE clamps and brackets but I had to make the cable myself and modify the eyes.

Here's the shots of the work

They were about a million eye twisting pieces. haha. They even worked. I ended up fixing them in place though as they were really delicate as well as expensive to replace.

That I just threaded through and glued in place as I went. Hoping to get a bit of sag as I went.

Then I finished off with the face plates for the clamps.

Next I scratch built the front mud flap locking clamps.
There's one on either side of the bow, but the other photo was too blurry to use.

Then I PEed the fire extinguisher... that took 3 hours all by itself.

Then it was on to on vehicle tools.
For these I removed the kit supplied moulded on clamps and took a razor saw to the handles to create wood texture. For the small shovel I completely replaced the handle.

I scratch built the jack block as the kit one was moulded right on to the hull and looked BLAH! to me.

So that was what I got done before I left to go camping last weekend.
Next post will be what I've done since I got back.

This week I started with the tow cable brackets. They took about 2 hours for all four of the large ones and another 2 for the four smaller ones on the enging deck.
They work and they're a complete pain in the arse to build.

After those I started with the S-Mine launchers on the lower hull.
First I drilled the mounting holes.

Then I built the mounting brackets. The parts were mixed up in the bags (another kit that I bought) so I had to figure out what was what.

These are the ones for the turret... no instructions with these I'm afraid.

An hour later... Done.

Next it's the rear plate... I'll start with the convoy light.
But that's the next update.
