It is also the 70th anniversary of the United States Air Force! It was established as an independent branch of the military on September 18, 1947 (I know next year is after the fact but I'm used to late birthday presents!). We have a ways to go yet to make 100 years, but, it's still an important date.
I'm also up for:
Multi engine jet or prop plane
Bombers (again!)
WWI (anything)
Cold War planes
Vietnam (again!)
ON THE BENCH: Do I have to say? :(

Could we extend your Heavenly Helicopters idea to include any VSTOL aircraft (Harriers, F-35s) or even sci-fi stuff with vertical take off (X-Wings, Eagle Transporters etc)

And following on from the conversation in Stokesy's X-Wing thread there's the Exceptional X-Wings vs Terrible Tie Fighters idea as well.

Nice to see this thread :-)

so my sugestions :

WWI , it will be the 100th anniversary on the end of WW! , so a SiG on this will be a good idea !

Smoke On - Acrobatic planes , civilian or military , jet or propeller

Duel in Desert : a SiG for Mediterranean/North Africa WW2 (a lot of possibilities )

Let's celebrate : a GB on Planes depicting comemorative colours

God Save the Queen ! - All UK from 100 years war , Zulu wars , WW1 , WW2 , Modern wars (Falklands, Iraq , Afeghanistan ), all conflicts , military or civilian

:cheers2:
Cheers ,

I'd be down for that, all kinds of bombers, night fighters, recon planes and unusual aircraft like the F-82 Twin Mustang.

Also another thought, any vehicle/aircraft/whatever not in it's original design/production country's markings. Lend lease, captured equipment, export stock, licensed (or reverse engineered) production etc.

I would guess about 90% of my stash is Tamiya, Bandai & Hasegawa but I've also got kits lurking around the back from Asuka, Bronco & Zvezda (and probably others I've forgotten) so I'm wondering if there'd be any interest in a "Not the Usual Suspects" build - ie build a kit from a manufacturer you've not done before.

Leaving aside the suggestions I'm interested in seeing how many folks turn out to vote for these and then how many convert into entries, I was thinking about this given that there were 68 votes for the Space SiG this time last year and yet there's currently only 12 build threads. I know there are reasons why people can't always follow through with what they intend (life, work etc) but it seems like there's been a low turn out for a number of the GBs & SiGs this year. Is it down to the general migration to Facebook especially following the Photobucket fiasco or are there other factors at work?

I've really enjoyed the builds I've joined and appreciated the support, encouragement and advice from the crowd so I'm just wondering what could be done to encourage more people to participate.
Cheers, Neil

I agree well said

I've only been on the forum for just over 18 months and I've noticed a drop introductions and posts. It's also surprising how many start GB's only to after disappear after a few posts!

Personally I don't do or use facebook or any other popular social media, much prefer the board/forum.

I like the out of the ordinary idea...got a few of those in the stash

The ISM forum is getting killed by Facebook IMHO and it is especially noticeable in the drop in general forum postings as well as participation in gb’s and sig’s
Some guys have been starting a sig or gb build thread with just a Facebook link and no other info :
Easier and quicker to fly into fb, drop a pic and leave. Photobucket fiasco has not helped at all for forums
You will notice that most of the live show members have dropped off on their forum participation, posting and gb/sig activity as well...sorry to say but true

I guess I just don't understand how the linear nature of facebook is more appealing than a structured forum? I am not anti facebook, but I just don't want to use it for a modelling venue.

Nor I my friend, nor I
Ease of use, speed, quick response, instant gratifications those are the FB attractions.
I always thought the Zuckerberg Guy was a creep, maybe that is why I am resisting.
It is so much easier to do a build thread in the forum set up....I do it for myself so I can remember what I used, what worked and what I messed up. It is easier to find my forum postings than trying to remember a video someone made or where something was discussed on a live show....god you cannot find anything on those again

Also, when I signed up an account on FB at home one evening, I had three junk phishing e mails from Facebook with Facebook logos the next morning on my work computer email...I said F it, no way.
I still get those daily: “Things have changed since your last visit” “you have 15 new messages” and my personal favourite “meet me for a sexual rendezvous in Atlanta”...she never showed

I'm a university student studying Information Technologies and I don't have a Facebook account, which makes me a very odd outlier and probably has flagged me as a possible school shooter in many government databases, but I still hate Facebook. It makes me very sad that there doesn't seem to be a decent (highly) active modelling community outside Facebook. Don't get me wrong the posts here on ISM are of very high quality, but it's not as active as I'd like. And don't get me wrong, I don't think there's a decent modelling community in Facebook because there's just nothing decent about Facebook. Sorry for grumbling.

When I was a fairly new modeler I did the F-82 twin mustang. Believe it was 1/72 scale. It was one of my best models that I did. More detailed than the others. All brush painted. The Two heads are better than one are like the naval aircraft such as the tomcat and it can't seat more than two.

in the interest of research I did a couple of quick searches on FB for 2 different amour vehicle's and what resulted was in my view extremely light weight compared to the build postings on the forum.
So That's my view face book is a LIGHT WEIGHT , But people are attracted to it because people are basically not wanting to put in the extra effort....yep there is a word for it

Some ideas I've thought of to hopefully keep things alive..

OOB(Out of box) - Only whats in the box can be used, no additional aftermarket, scratch building etc

Specific brand build - Any model, scale, type from one kit manufacturer

Commemorative/anniversary/special liveries - Something that features a special scheme

Classic Jet Age - Any jet that was introduced/flown/produced between 1940-1970

In enemy hands - Captured vehicle, aircraft etc in opposition markings

Figure or Bust build?

Wheelie good time - Land based things with wheels (Bikes, cars, trucks etc)

I like that idea covers my planned builds for next year :th:

Or what about
Classic Grand Prix, F1, GP, I of Man etc winners.

What they won on or in, the cars or bikes world champions won on/in

The odd ones. Car/bikes that never made it, 6 wheel Tyrrell P34, hub steering Elf Honda and Bimota Tesi 1D of the 80s etc

Hey Guys

Anything with a Swedish connection is an auto-vote from me :D

I also really like the idea of these:

Enemy Hands - captured vehicle
Happy birthday theme (RAF 100 yr & USAF 70)
Braille scale (1/72 and 1/76 scale) - any kit
Cold War (and Hot Jets) - any cold war era jet aircraft
Training Day - school aircrafts any scale or nationality

Lysus is busy enough battling the Hydra that life is throwing at him at the moment to get the proposed Racing GB off the ground so how about including that idea into the official pot? Really simple - anything (car, bike, plane, boat, horse) in racing/competition livery.

The other appeal of that proposal was a longer build time so is there a possibility that one or two of the GBs could be extended to six months rather than four to accommodate the slower builders or those that want to go big for example with a dio that would be tight to fit into the usual 3 or 4 month build times.
Cheers, Neil

I second that. :th:  :cheers2:
Thirdeded :thumb2:
Fourth. Fourthed. Fourthded. Me too.

Free time lately just doesn't seem to exist for me :ooops:

Not a ton of plastic kits for it, but heck even a little dio or something with a boxcar (HO boxcars are cheap and roughly 1:87 or something)

I love weird and strange things but I'm not so sure how you'd define what is and isn't weird or strange for GB purposes :

The Germans certainly came up with a lot of crazy things, I like the suggestion :thumb1:

Those weird things were in the aircraft department. They had two He111s combined as one, do335 push-pull airplane. When I was starting out modelling there was a F-82 twin mustang. I know you can still get it at more of the mainstream hobby stores that aren't dedicated to the modelling.

How about something Russian tovarich? There's oodles of aircraft, AFV's, figures, ships and missiles out their these days. This could cover WWI, WWII, Cold War and contemporary. As these things come in differing scales e.g. 1/35 AFV'S, 1/350 Ships, then there doesn't need to be much restriction on scale (anyone so inclined could enter. It could just as easily be UK, US or German for that matter. Just a thought.
