Not to worry I wasn't 100% happy with the work anyway just couldn't bring myself to strip and redo, so it's a blessing.

Ya, I know the feeling
I stripped paint on BOTH my Space shuttle builds for the Space GB last fall
It is what it is with airbrushing sometimes and trying to push yourself to do better

Up date on the painting, I re-primed and dust coated (twice) everything again, the finish is dull, almost grainy, slightly rough to touch and I'm still getting particles which is starting to drive me mad! :wall:   It's as if the paint is drying before hitting the surface but it isn't.:   I stripped them all again :wall: and tried various things, higher/lower pressures, higher/lower ratios (20 - 70% of levelling thinner still much the same result with the dust coats.  :wall: :pistols:

If I wet coat it's pretty good but then not drying even after 3 days in an airing cupboard!  :pistols: I also noticed when wet coating particles are back, having fished one off the surface they are flake like, I think the paint is contaminated somehow, could be me but I don't know how. :wtf:

This is the result with Tamiya X-1 2 dust coats one wet coat, same thinner and airbrush, it's got to be the paint!

I've now stripped them yet again and switching to Tamiya, I think Mr Hobby isn't for me or there's something wrong with the jar I've got! :pistols:

Maybe try doing a Tamiya (TS) rattlecan decanting thing. Paul mentioned that in one of his latest videos with a few coats on his skyline cars and such. Must be something to that. They do look awesome.

YA go to your Tamiya and some lacquer thinner and all will be good
Gotta be the paint after you have tried all the other variables....three day drying tome says a lot about that paint being 'off'

Chin up mate, you will get it...and learn in the process.

Ok the saga continues....................... I've been waiting for the new paint to arrive and as you know I stripped all the bodywork yet again.

While waiting for the paint and in between work which has gone mad, I refilled rubbed down the areas that the stripping removed liquid filler, only to discover the plastic has caved in or worn away!  There has always been what I though was an air bubble but as it turns out I think this is just where the moulding/thickness of the plastic is at fault.  Where there is a locating dowel/hole on either side of the tank half the area directly above them has broken through, after several attempts to fill them they are just getting worse,  The areas have now dropped below the contour on the tank!

I've given up now, this kit is fighting me all the way it's just one thing after the other, I'm settling for how it is now and will just top coat and clear maybe it won't look so bad just want it finished now and move on.

If you look carefully you can see the particles I've been suffering, luckily these are sitting on dried primer. I've got no idea where thy're coming from!

Ok, I had another go at the indentations I just couldn't leave them as it were.

I gave it another go with a different putty and that didn't work. I dug out all the putty, you can now see the holes I've no idea why they're there it must be a manufacturing defect or something.

I've now cut small plugs and glued these in with extra thin, once fully hardened I'll sand to profile fingers crossed that should be this issue over!

There's a very slight shadow on the left hand one but I think once colour and top coat are added it will disappear, it's Sunday and that means pub :cheers2: :cheers2:

Glad you didn’t give up, was thinking ‘gotta add some more styrene too big for filler’
Go have a pint and relax
There is something in your air...how about putting the parts into a clean plastic tub to dry???

The holes weren't that big to start with, they started as tiny marks, then pin holes to finally holes, I said I think these are due to a manufacturing faults. :wtf:

The particle issue isn't happening while drying it's happening at the point of them being airbrushed :pistols: I do place just painted items inside an upturned plastic container, it's when I place them under the container I notice the particles :pistols: I've got a new BV300S and I've only started using it on this build. The vent is so good it creates an air current in the whole room, as I'm air brushing particles are being pulled down and into the vent right past whatever I'm spraying, some particles get stuck to the wet paint or that's my logic. I've changed a few things on the spray both now, I wasn't using the hood I've now fitted it, I've also ordered a air purifier. The room isn't dusty as such, but the carpet, my chair, footwear etc are I think creating fibers, and these particles are small fibers, so my logic here is clean the air.

I also will now hover the room once every few days instead of the once a week/fortnight as I said the room isn't dusty, I'm confident I'll beat the particles.

It's not too bad mate, there's a small shadow on the left hand side one, but I think once colour and clear coated it will disappear :th:

One of the plus sides to all these issues is, I've had a lot more practice at using the airbrush :th:

Ok another up date, as you all know I've had more than a few problems with this build, especially with Mr Hobby Aqueous paint Shine Red H23 and particles.  Aqueous first,  I thinned using Mr Hobby levelling thinners as is recommended on many modelling forums, although I got a lovely smooth finish. After 12 hrs I would leave glove marks and slight finger marks after 24 hrs, after 48 hrs in an airing cupboard it appeared cured.  I only found out after spraying the second colour and removing the masking it was still soft, the levelling thinner as you know contains a retarder so I thought I'd put too much thinner in or perhaps hadn't given it enough time to harden.  Interestingly I did spray some mule pieces and these remained soft for about 9 days!

I had little choice but to strip the print, this would be the first of what is now 7 full strip downs!

I've tried various ratios of thinner (30% - 70%), tried air pressures (7- 35psi) different needles (0.2 - 0.4), I stopped using levelling thinner and used Mr Hobby Aqueous thinner and Ultimate thinner, although now drying/curing I was was getting was dull/rough looking finish with particles, more on them later. I tried light dusting coats, one or 2 dusting and a wet coat and everything in between, still dull and grainy finish. I wasn't too fussed with the dullness as the clear will put the shine on but it is supposed to be gloss, it was the grainy/rough finish that was getting me.

I replaced the paint with another jar of H23 (it was the same batch No but from a different supplier) and repeated the above nothing worked, after stripping the items 7 times I was at the point of doubting myself and giving up on this build.   In the mean time I've been tackling the particle issue, these are not dust but tiny fibres that I tracked down to my sport sweat shirts/hoodies I wear while at home.  I also believe the carpet and plastic castors on my chair are creating static which isn't helping.  I'm also using my new spray booth a BenchVent BV300S-D, which works so well it forms air currents within the room, the booth comes with a detachable hood which I wasn't using so as to increase visibility and access above it.  What I now believe is particles are floating off me and up, the static isn't helping here by I think charging the air around me forcing any particles up and away I not sure how, as static normally attracts but I know it can repel.  I'm not an expert so I could well be wrong, but when working in the evenings I don't use the room light just my 3 desk lamps, 2 (Lightcraft tripple tube) are over the assembly bench and 1 (Lightcraft LED) over the spray booth, when I walked back into the room after getting a drink I could see many floating particles.  These were being drawn into the the booth from above,  eureka...................!

I've now fitted the hood and bought an air purifier, the latter is capable of filtering a room 4 times the size of my work room.  I now hover once a week, turn on the purifier 30mins before hand, turn on the booth and blow the work area thoroughly and prepare the paint.  Ok back to the paint......... I  remembered buying Mr Color Shine Red 79, which was going to be my full back, well I'm glad I did,  I thinned with a mix of plain Mr Hobby thinner and levelling as per their website (1 - 2) and this is the results

Image
The paint is now smooth, glossy and cured enough within a few hours to handle  :th:

At last I was really beginning to wonder if it was me and bikes/cars was out of my modelling reach.  Sadly the indents on the tank are still there but, I'm not stripping it again they can stay there as a reminder.  My conclusions, Mr Hobby Aqueous H23 Shine Red Batch No A0Z1 could possibly have a problem, it doesn't like levelling thinner, neither is it a gloss, now it's still perfectly possible it's me, but as you can see it took no effort at all to get a very good finish with Mr Color shine Red 79. To me Aqueous should be the same, but even using Mr Hobby Aqueous thinner try as I might I couldn't get a glossy or non grainy finish with 2 jars of the stuff.

Having never masked up anything like this on a model before, except the last time I got this far with this build before having all the soft paint issues.  :pistols:

What is recommended for where the line edge (see below picture) are proud, do I just leave it and let the colour coat sort it or slightly rub down?

I'm a little concerned about the very prominent edges, not sure as to whether just to leave them a clear coat or lightly rub down.

After lightly rubbing down the masking edges I've now added the first coat of clear ready for the decals.  :th:

Things have been mad at work of late, not had much bench time until last evening and today.

Decals are on, as is the first coat of clear just got to rubb down the odd bit and then the final coat and wet coat. I have to say I'm really impressed with this Mr Color GX100 Super Clear 111, it took bit of fluffing about to get the thinning ratio right as it's really thick out of the jar, but the finish is amazing. :th:
