I'm so pleased I decided to build an aircraft in the run up to the Bomber SIG. Its a completely different mindset to armour building. I know you don't do tanks so maybe you don't see it but it feels like almost a different hobby. In a way I can understand why some people ONLY build tanks or ONLY build ships / aircraft etc.

Another reason I'm pleased I got back into wingy things is I'm starting to drool over the beauties I've got in the stash too.

It took me a while to get my aircraft head back on if I'll be honest. But I reckon by May 1st my powers will be at their zenith and I will be fully ready NOT to win anything again!

Got the paint onto the upper surfaces today, a mix of Tamiya light grey and white. The marbling effect hasn't come out so well this time. Maybe I was a bit heavy handed, or maybe it was just too light a colour - I honestly don't know. I think I'll have to do some research on marbling for very light colours.

Paintwork is a bit rough in places too. Something I frequently struggle with



It still looks nice but after the effect I achieved on the underside, its all a bit under par. Still, its all new to me and I have no problem with taking it as a lesson learned.





The masking came out ok. A little touch up required on the lower cowling but other than that, not too bad.



You can see where the touch up's needed.





Overall the session was good and bad. Next up is a gloss before decals.

have a look at doog's black basing 201 series...



it'll take some time to watch them all but you should get a better understanding of how it works

Had a look at what to do with the paintwork today.

Where it was so rough, it started coming away like a powder against my fingers so I wiped the upper surfaces down with a dry tissue. It came off like dust. I think it must have been the paint mix. I used Tamiya white that had been sitting in the pot pre-thinned for a while, maybe it had gone off. Whatever the case, I managed to wipe the surfaces down a layer to where it was smoother then used some decent paint to cover up the mess. The mix was a slightly darker tone so the paintwork has regained a little depth.



The finish was smooth this time so I went ahead and glossed it with Alclad Aqua gloss. I love the stuff, its a superb varnish and really adds to the paint's depth, especially on the underside where you can ACTUALLY still see the marbling!







Decals later today. Time to give the bird some real identity.

I wouldn’t take too many notes on the upper surfaces paint job! Every time I look at it I’m reminded of Blackadder’s critique of Baldric’s war poem.

Already planning for it. Rest assured, I shall be handling all kit related material.

Finally got back to the bench today. Busy with the move - and the stress of the move - but things are in good shape now so I got back to it

First use of my decal pens. First requirement was to colour code them for the 2 Microscale solutions I use.



Then it was time to see how they went. I added a pipette's worth of solution to each one as I figured that would be plenty.

I'm well pleased with how they work. After a few brushes the liquid started to flow but there was no dripping or excess, they work a treat! Managed to get the main decals done and all the stencils on the upper wings and fuselage.







Trickiest decals were the walkway lines on the wings. Less dramatic than I thought they would be but they fought me just a little





Happier with the build now. The paint looks nice with the decals and I'm liking the overall scheme.





I emptied the pens back into their respective bottles and rinsed the nibs in water. Not sure about leaving the solutions in so I thought better safe than sorry.

The underside will be done tomorrow and I think that will probably be it before the move. I had hope to finish it before moving but I just cant see it.

I've planned all I can for the move. I get the keys on the 1st. All the new furniture is arriving on the second (including my new chair and a second desk to double my bench space) then the big stuff from my current place goes in on the 3rd.

Bench wise, I hope to be up and running again by COB on the 4th.

Well its taken a little bit longer than I had planned but today was the day. No more moving stuff to do, today was the first day where I could truly do what I wanted with my time.

First up was testing the new chair. Very pleased. Comfortable, easy to move and goes nicely under the bench.



Detail stuff today. Got the underside stencils done.



Finished painting the propeller and the main wheels.



Now with her boots on - test fitted, minus the tail wheel



That famous Spitfire nose - pilot couldn't see a thing on the ground!



Next up will be glossing to seal the decals (still need to do the decals on the prop and spinner) then a Ultimate wash and weathering to finish. Then its on to the BOMBER SIG - FINALLY!!!!

That's a great looking chair mate, if I may ask where did you find/get it? I really need to replace my old office fabric one, the gas shock has started go now. I have to keep adjusting it up every hour or so and before anyone says it I've not put on weight the chair is about 8yrs old and was a cheapish one from Staples I think it was.

I'm in the same boat with my car build, work is just crippling at the moment but hopefully I;ll have the car finished this weekend and like you start on the bomber

I got it from Argos. It’s well comfy and was a doddle to put together too. Really pleased with it.

Glossed this morning to seal in the decals and get her ready for a dirty old wash. Ultimate Dark Dirt



Then a wipe down with a cotton bud and some tissues.





Then it was time for some chipping, gun smoke and engine staining. I popped the legs on too.





And peeled off the cockpit masks. used a wooden BBQ stick after learning a lesson last time using metal tweezers - scratches!!















So there she is. Rushed the finish but screw it, I've got a Dambuster to crack open for the bomber SIG and I'm beginning to look conspicuous by my absence!

Whats with the grey scheme ? is it `Late War` ? as in, when Mustangs couldnt be arsed with camo `cause they were so on top of the Luftwaffe.

It’s a high altitude scheme used in Italy. I cheated a bit because I kept the original shape wing tips, not the extended high altitude ones.

It was a new one on me too. I went for it partly because I didn't want to do the standard RAF two tone camo scheme. I have a Lancaster up next and that will be in standard RAF Bomber Command colours so I didn't want to do two similar camo schemes on the trot.
