Ok, so at this point in the build I’ve pushed on with the inflight build as most all things are closed up and it’s
Easier to get it to the final paint stage. So the wing roots are buttoned up.......

Now it’s at this point with the outer wings that I discovered that no gun detail was supplied with the kit so I
Decided to add my own using brass tubing......
So I counter sunk some depressions into the main spar housing keeping in mind NOT to go all the way through due
To the fact that it would foul the main wing spar on final assembly. I then chamfered the outer edges of the barrels
And drilled out the outer openings to to remove any swath from cutting the tubing.....

Any whoooo.......

The inner detail is given a coat of the top colour for depth
And then the final bits assembled...
So with the exception of the rudder, this is ready for paint!

Howdy people!

So after a slight delay the main paint is done and ready for stencil decaling. The MRP lacquer paints lay down
Very smoothly and leave a nice satin finish. However, using the Montex vinyl masks (being thicker than masking tape)
In conjunction with lacquer paint (also thicker than acrylic paint) did leave a slight lip to the edges of the painted
Areas. Though that was dealt with by using the blue side of the “ultimate modelling products” polishing stick.
This was also used to start the weathering process buy fading the insignias and camo line and scuff up some areas.


So we start with the pre shading which incidentally I tried using my new H&S infinity plus airbrush with some......
Startup issues any whoooo.......

The MRP white covered very well as well as the intermediate blue to let the pre shading show through.....

Now on top the walkways were painted then masked before the top colour went down.....

Next was the “Montex” masks for the insignias.....
Then some of the pre fading of the paint work...

And some final angles........
So just a few decals and stencils to go before weathering starts!

Righty O then!

I just had to share a quick update on the old Corsair. I decided to ditch the Tamiya decals completely and run
With HGW models wet transfers instead for all the stencils and markings...... bloody brilliant! If you have prepped
Them correctly (as per instructions) they lay down like paint. No carrier film, no decal setting solution and just look
Amazing! Sneak peek below.....

I have to do the rest of the airframe but they are so easy to work with, I should have some more pics over the next few
Days.

Ok! So paint is now complete along with some pre weathering and fading of the insignias and camo line, also
Stencils are all laid down. By the way, wet transfers are just the business! After a little clean up of the excess adhesive,
And a semigloss clear coat, they are so much better than Tamiya decals no muss no fuss. Any way on with the show.....

And finally.....



Now I have to do something I always dread and slop on some ultimate products weathering wash. Now I now this will
Turn out just fine but it always looks like it’s ruined when it first goes down. Anywho.....

Looking great, some good progress updates
I have a love/hate with weathering as well..half the time I hate mucking something so pristine and the other half love the dirty look on it
A good clear is always the saviour

Thanks mate, in spite of the anxiety I always get when I do this, weathering is in fact my favourite part of modeling.
My F1 cars have to be pristine as that’s how the teams represent them at every race but I like the fun of dirtying down
Something so it looks used and possibly has a story behind why it looks the way it does.

So it’s about this time that I would be updating the Corsair builds but....... a little while ago ( about 12 months)
My spray booth kicked the bucket but I managed to get it working with my trusty persuader
However last week it died for real.

The good news is this arrived today..........


Or so I thought....... it has a UK plug and even though we are a colony of mother England IT NO FIT!
Sooooooo...... I now have to go tomorrow to find a replacement. Not hard mind just annoying that I can’t play
With the new toy. Anywho fresh build updates soon as the goal is to have the inflight build finished by the end
Of the week.

The BV is a great bit of kit, had mine a little over a year now very pleased with it.

I think someone screwed up at E models or perhaps you didn't tick the right box as they are available with any plug. As you say not a show stopper just annoying, enjoy.

Yep it’s 100% maybe probably my fault! But the ever patient wife has just shown up with a replacement plug and I now
Have it installed on the work bench.

Now if I could just find something to paint........

Right!

So where we left off last time was a fairly liberal sloping on of the Ultimate weathering wash. This was done over a semi gloss
Coat so it didn’t stick too solidly to the paint work as I wanted some grime but mostly highlighting panel lines and rivet
Details. Slightly moistened kitchen towel was use remove the bulk of what I wanted to get rid of and the last little bit was
Wiped in the direction of air flow to achieve some subtle streaking grime.......

This is the first layer of weathering and already it gives life and depth to the aircraft. When I was completely
Happy with the results and a little fine tuning, I sealed this layer with another semi gloss coat to protect this
Work against the next layers weathering. I have to say Ultimate washes are very easy to use and very forgiving also
(If you’ve prepped the paint work correctly) easy to erase if you make a mistake as it doesn’t ruin anything.
Anywho, on to the next phase!

Ok,

So the next step in the weathering process, I tried something I had heard of but haven’t seen done before and it
Utilises a form of salt technique that rather than use it for chipping, I used it to get some panel fading and natural
Looking grime build up. Now this was achieved using sea salt flakes to get uneven/irregular shapes and highly
Diluted white paint. 20ml thinner with 2 drops of paint shot at 12-15 psi max. The trick is to slowly build up the
Layers, letting it dry and going again only if necessary as it’s very easy to over do this and ruin the whole thing.

The results are quite effective........

This was all done over the most exposed surfaces to the sun but left out of the vertical surfaces to creat some subtle
Shadowing.

For the high traffic areas, I did the same again but with black paint to get some deeper grime particularly on the lower
Surfaces......


The details now are beginning to pop and this layer was sealed with a light coat of semi gloss clear as well.

Alrighty then,


Now comes the closing stages of weathering this bird. This is where the whole thing can come undone as a lot of
Modellers get carried away with slopping on to much enamel oil stains and fuel marks and exhaust stains as well as
To much oil paint in general and the elements don’t blend together. We see one particular bit of weathering on
Someone else’s model and want to incorporate into our own and that’s all fine to do as I to see some fantastic stuff
People have done and want to replicate it. But....... the question we often forget to ask ourselves is “does it fit in
With what I’m trying to show?” In my humble opinion, weathering just for the sake of it can ruin the aesthetics of
A beautifully constructed and painted model. So the question I ask is “what has this subject seen/been through to
Get to where it is today?” What is the reason it looks a certain way? Then decide at what point you want the subject to
Be at. E.G fresh off the assembly line all the way to crashed rusted out hulk. So with that in mind, these final stages
Just take what’s already there and throw a little enhancement at it with some oil paints and enamel grime with some
Pigments thrown in.......

So at this point this bird only needs a top coat of flat clear to bring all these elements together when I noticed
The stand for this was black and kind of didn’t lend anything to the overall look so I decided to paint it in the same colours
As the aircraft......

So the last few things to tie up on this part of the build is the pilot tube the antenna post and run the antenna leads
And this one is done! Final shots next time!

Wow, this is nothing short off amazing mate the finish is superb. That salt weathering is really good gives a totally realistic sun faded paint surface, do you apply something to make it stick them over spray or do you just sprinkle the crystals on and over spray?

I'm going to add the kit to my stash

Hey Kev,

This technique works well over a semigloss or flat clear coat “not” a gloss coat. The reason is you apply liberal
Amounts of water over the surfaces you want to cover with the salt and if you have a gloss coat the water beads
Instead of pooling where you want it to go creating to heavy clumps of salt when sprinkling on. After you lay down the
Water, use pinches of sea salt flakes over the water and try not to make to big clumps. Leave it to fully dry for a couple
Of hours, then get your airbrush at low pressure 12-15psi and gently blow air onto the model to get rid of any loose
Bits. This assures you that the salt has stuck and won’t move during the paint phase.

So, to apply the water you can use a large flat (clean) brush or a squeegee bottle (again thoroughly rinsed out).
Once you have put the paint layer on leave it to dry and go off again for a couple of hours. Don’t be tempted to remove
The salt before the paint it fully cured or the work will appear obscured and more blended than intended.
To remove the salt just use a dry clean brush and brush in the direction of airflow. For the more stubborn bits of salt
Use a slightly moistened microfibre cloth and gently wipe again in the direction of air flow. This is best used as the final
Layer of weathering because if you put a final clear coat over this it will all but disappear.

I have almost finished rigging the antenna wire so I’ll have the finished pics up later today and I’ll put some
In the gallery as well.

So it’s been a while since I’ve updated this thread mostly due to moving house an having no
Space for modeling sadly. But now I am set up and as promised part two of this build is now on the
Bench. So if you remember I finished off the in flight version and got up to the wings and under
Carriage of the folded wings version so here we go.......

Oh first to show off the new digs..... Now it’s onto the P.E for the wheel bay....

A small update for now but more to follow soon.

So it doesn’t look like it but a fair amount of work has gone on culminating in finished wing
Root attached to the main fuselage. We start off with some micro mask to get a little chipping
In the wheel bays.....

The paints I have used on these builds up to now, I cannot rave enough about (MRP or mr paints)
The colour match is outstanding and they cover really well. Not the healthiest mind as they are
Super smelly and toxic but if you are carful well worth it. Also Ultimate’s weathering wash is the
Business to dirty up the wells. Now the tail wheel gear is no installed with the gear doors...

WHEW !

So the only real seam issue with this entire build has been ina fairly prominent place right in front
Of the wing root....
The buttoned up wheels wells...

And finally all attached to the fuselage....

So some wiring will get added the those bays and the wing fold area for some added ocd
Detail but for now it’s on to the main landing gear. Now the resin wheels by eduard for this
Kit are just gorgeous. A sneek peak.....
