I worked on cockpit and internals today




Some wiring and wood grain and leather and aluminum..and lots of test fitting.
Normally I paint edges and such of parts, but I have been warned to not slop paint into fitting surfaces as things won’t go together
So you are seeing some of that sloppy bit







I think my internal linen is pretty dope....some might call it smick I am down with the kids too

My son came into my room and said “hey, is that wood?....it looks like wood” love it.

I have a little process for doing the light and dark wood.
It is not perfect, but it is a repeatable process for me so I can keep it fairly consistent and uses readily available paint I have on hand
It is easy to go a bit overboard on stuff you’re not gonna see

Aside from the rigging as an obvious Road Block to making a WNW kit, Wood Grain pattern painting is a worry
I made mine from acrylics as I have a short attention span and need a quick set time
Been watching lots of videos with oils on faces etc and I just ordered some W&N fast set oil flesh, white, black and red to do figure faces.
Then my daughter said that she had some of those oils from grandma who passed all her art stuff along after she died. Wow freebies!!!
So here let's test out some oils vs the acrylics for making wood. I watched Will Pattison do an oil fading video after work today...that was my inspiration.



The oil is super easy to work with and blend. I got the yellow ochre as a light wood base down, some brush strokes for grain and then over gently with tiny bits of burnt umber as grain pattern. Now we will see how long it takes to set from 8pm Wednesday the 5th= start time.
Did a darker wood with more obvious grain pattern...this is kinda fun



I do exactly the same technique with the citadel acrylics working light base to darker accents,on top. Use your brush marks as grain pattern, almost drybrush overtop those with darker shades.
For a large surface, I sprayed Ultimate gelb (yellow) as my base and then worked the other acrylics overtop.
Oils blend far better with less abrupt lines of demarcation, but the acrylics dry faster. Oils also stink more and the smell lingers IMHO

Preparing my mind for the fuselage painting. The color RFC used was PC-10 of course that changes through the war period


I like the brownish green look not too brown, not too green
The WNW kit colour call outs for PC-10 are olive drab XF-62 and flat brown XF-10 in a 2:1 ratio

What if someone wanted to paint an entire fuselage using oil paint just to try something different

That Plasmo character did it on uTube a while ago and it has stuck with me.

There is an extra fuselage in this kit. I may prime it up and see if I can hand paint it in oil just for fun and try something different

Bingo, what a pain in the ....you know
I did up the second fuselage interior and oiled the tail
It looks great, but I got a smear and then a dog hair and then dust. Kept having to remove, re-apply and then blend
So will do the main build in acrylics and save the oil for the side build fuselage
I do like the richness and depth of colour from the oil paint, just too difficult to keep smooth

But I liked playing with oils more than I thought I would
The nice thing is I have them already and the tubes last forever
The downside is definitely the slow dry time. There are additives to be used to speed drying...maybe
I can see using oils for weathering in the future

WARNING: oil paint residue can F up your acrylics from sticking...make sure you keep them separate, clean your hands and wipe parts before painting.

Got some more goodies in for the diorama part

Figure painting specialist...just what I need! ..... well if your painting more than 2 resin figures....that's special

They do look terrific and would be a great addition to the aircraft....

It’s is actually easy to paint in the oils with a few precautions the biggest ones are to not use too much, blend it well and leave it alone after that.
Oil is very satisfying material to work with as is so blendable, so easy to change tones and shades...just darn fun. HATE THE SLOW SET TIME, I am going to find some accelerant. So far wood and leather are my favorite things to paint in oils.
I oil painted one side of the spare fuselage today, not touching it until Sunday


Also got the PE seat belts in and weathered plus the wiring for the foot controls ready. Almost ready to button up the cockpit.

Some fantastic work there, she's looking great. Looking forward to seeing those figures come together.

Quick question, do you leach your oils. I find that using something like corrugated cardboard as a palette helps drain any excess linseed oil from the paint. You end up with a better colour, but the biggest advantage is that it dries much quicker.

Yes I do leach out the paints out. I tried the cardboard and it was fine, but I found a kitchen towel, we call them paper towels, worked even better as it sped the drying time at least the first try.
So I have done that again with the fuselage and have a test sprue painted to test drying time

Ya the oil stuff is just fun for me and it is super easy
I learned a better way to do leather yesterday......light primer, clear orange tamiya, your desired shade of oil paint
As you brush on the oils, you can control the depth of colour you want
It is easier than falling off a log
I will show the leather headrest when it is dry

I've just joined the oil bandwagon as well and planning to have a dabble with them this weekend all being well so thanks for the tip of using paper towels to leech them off as I was wondering if that would work.

Make sure you use separate brushes too
They don't have to be expensive, super duper unicorn hair brushes costing a fortune..... just try to keep oil ones vs others separate
My favourite ones are stiffer 'chisel' shaped for the wood grain effect

Cheers Scott I might be in touch after I've had a play, and yep already got a set of el-cheapo brushes set aside for this experiment.

I also remember as a kid working with enamels creating a wood effect by simply putting some paint on a small cloth and then wiping it over the surface to create the streaking/grain effect so I might give that a go as well.

Hi
One fuselage has smooth sides and the other has wrinkles moulded in
It is really a lovely kit for details

Managed to get the cockpit cemented in
The tolerances are super tight and I had to do a touch of trimming and lots of test fitting



Removed the wiring harness additions from both sides and tested the engine



Spare fuselage coming along. I am thinking of a diorama with spare parts lying around

The engine fits fine now, but I had to remove my outside wiring from both heads.
Once the fuselage and cockpit are together then you start to build the motor...I skipped ahead and paid the price
Will mod my mods so that it all works out
Really have to test fit and think ahead with these kits
I had to seal a small seam on the fuselage, not bad at all though
