Slight delay to the project.....baby number one arrived safely on Tuesday, so painting may have to be delayed a few weeks until the dust settles! All healthy and happy though, and a much better end result than any of my other projects ever turned out even if I do say so myself!

Will still get finished in time for the deadline, just may have to wait a few weeks for updates!

Thanks everyone! Well the little one is nearly two weeks old already! both she and mam are doing amazing , so I was 'allowed' a few hours at the bench over the weekend, so I took full advantage.

I made a start painting the whippet (no need to phone the RSPCA!! ) laid down a shadow coat using Tamiya nato black, a highlight coat with white, then blow over the lot with Tamiya Olive Green. It does look a little too green maybe, but once the clear coat is down and weathered, it will darken down, I did blow over a dust coat with Olive drab, and I can adjust it if I need too, but I wanted it to be 'a bit green' rather than 'a bit brown' so I'm happy with it so far....





Gloss coat, decals, detail painting and weathering are next on the list for it, then I still need to tackle the tracks

I also made a start on painting the dio, base colours laid down over primer and then a few coats of Klear, ready for washes and weathering, lots and lots of weathering, so it'll look a lot different when it's finished.

Broad sunlight and a nice breeze meant drying times were virtually zero I like to just throw on the first few coats of paint and then take more time and care with the weathering afterwards.

I might have done an hour or so on the diorama before the little one was born....but then completely forgot to update the thread..... but it did get Kleared this weekend and a few other touches.

And the tank was definitely bare plastic on Saturday morning, and painted by Saturday lunch time, Scouts honour

I need to work fast, it will be December 31st before we know what's going on, the whole year has been a blur .....spoken like a true 'old' person

many (belated) congratulations Gary the Whippet is lovely no sorry the baby is lovely I'm sure! now all you have to do is work out how you can hold a bottle and baby with one arm and dry brush with the other so as not to waste all those wee small hours awake...

TINY update, did a little detail painting....that's it...

It just keeps getting better

Well after a short hiatus dealing with temper tantrums and dirty nappies (that's just me!) I couldn't let the 100 year anniversary of the end of The Great War pass without taking some time out to reflect and what better way to be alone with your thoughts and be thankful for the freedom we have than some time at the bench. So I managed a few hours over the weekend progressing the Whippet.

I'll keep it short and sweet. White and red stripe was painted on, purposely detacked the masking tape to try to give slightly rough edges:



The tracks were painted with a silver base coat, then lightly coated in a mix of flat black with a touch of brown, I'm happy with how these are looking, think they'll come into their own once I get weathering and add some dry brushing. They were VERY fiddly to fit though, almost as if they were one link short, but I managed in the end:



Tank was then given a few coats of Klear before setting overnight and the decals were applied yesterday:



Then last night once the decals had set most of the day, I gave another few light coats of Klear just to seal everything in ready for washes and weathering, happy with it so far:



I had to take a little artistic licence, the Musical Box tank number was A344, but the kit decals only had A347, so I cut off the 7 and hid the '4' behind the spuds on the side of the tank, that's where the number was located, so rather than waste time making/painting an additional '4' that would never be seen, I thought this was fair game.

And I purposely went in hard on the 'IX' decal with the softening solution to give it a slight worn look, so that's why it doesn't look perfect.

My infantry have also been primered and had a base coat of Tamiya Field Grey over them, will start the detail painting next but I've got no photos of them sorry, not much to see yet.

The contrast is actually a little more 'stark' in places than I was trying for but that will be diluted once I get some heavy washes onto it. My reference pic on the first page has the tank looking really dusty and dirty, so I'm going to go fairly heavy with the weathering on this one, and then hopefully the variation will still be visible underneath.....planned all along

Fear not gents, this is still ticking over slowly in the background, I can sense you are all worried

Weathering the Whippet has begun, needs a dull coat and some pigment application and it's done.



And my motley crew are looking a lot more presentable....I still can't for the life of me paint faces though, but they look 'ok'...from 50 yards away....in the dark...through thick fog so that's good enough for me.



I'm hoping to get completely finished by this time next week, need to mount my men (leave the childish puns to me please) here is a mock up mid way through the weathering...dio still needs a dull coat and some pigments adding as well, but the finish line is in sight.



Hope everyone else had a productive weekend, looking forward to seeing all the RFI posts starting to trickle in now the deadline is approaching.

That looks fantastic, I love the weathering on the tracks, and to me the figures look great!

I have a 'slap it on and hope for the best' mentality when it comes to painting and weathering always seems to turn out ok in the end, the infantry did take a good few hours of details painting for each of them though, so the time was invested there

Beautiful diorama Gary, everything ties in together really well. Love weathering and the figures look great!

I managed to lay a matt coat down this weekend on both the diorama and the tank, no pictures though, all that's left to do is try to correct the faces on my men, and then mount everything, and just some dry pigments to go on.

Setting my dead line to be complete for 1 week from today

great work there Gary. Since you asked for some comments. I noticed no mud left on the cobble stone from the tracks on the whippet and the soldiers are too clean....more mud.

Yeah I was actually planning on adding a little more grime to the soldiers, I have a applied a light black wash to them, I'm thinking of just 'dusting them up' now with some dry pigments and see how they look, hopefully that will be enough? I'm trying to depict the scene where they are setting off into battle rather than completely beat up.

This looks decidedly dusty to me, August 1918, height of summer, more dust required all round I think

Love the brick but since you asked the one thing i was thinking was on the broken edge there would be a lot of morter dust and a lot of times the mortar would still be stuck to the unbroken bricks, the front looks amazing but that just stuck out to me a little. All in all it really looks killer though.

Appreciate it I'm going to 'go to town' with the dry pigment on the smashed bricks before the final reveal, so hopefully I can achieve a more realistic finish.

It does look like it has just finished raining, even the bricks are just right for that.

ooh - looking forward to seeing the advanced techniques in action

Well, I'm calling it done now, felt like a long project with plenty of 'distractions' along the way so I'm glad to see this one over the line. Not 100% happy with it, but is anyone ever?! Overall I think it turned out ok though. Looking forward to getting stuck into something a bit more modern for my next build, and a bit cleaner!

Final reveal thread and pictures to follow, but a sneak peek from yesterday for now as I was applying the last of the weathering...



REALLY enjoyed the whole process of my first group build, thanks for all the great feedback, I'll definitely be participating in another one in the new year, have a good one guys
