I just read this thread from page one - I don't know why but I hadn't seen it before. All I can say is: wow, what a master-class! Brilliant!

For rolling Magic Sculpt, in the absence of talc, I find cornflour works well too

Update #8

The helicopter isn't done yet, needs some detail painting.
But I wanted to do something else for a change, so I started at the base.

This chopper is going on a round base made from a plastic cap that we use at work to protect the pipe bevels.
I'm dutch, so if I can get it for free, I will! Cheap ass...

I will paint this cap flat black

I want to create a sort of landing base like the ones on top of hills,where they would do quick in and out pick-ups and drop-offs..
So I googled the web for images from vietnam earth and folliage.
This is what I found.

So I now know what groundwork to make.

I'm adding some sandbags and medical suplies too, and a figure that is on it's way from the U.S

Back to base building...

These are the products i'm using:

After a lot of mixing pigments I finally had the correct, slightly red colour of Vietnam earth.
My camera does not pick up the colour now, for it's dark outside, and to dark in my livingroom to take a decent photo.
Daylight works better

Anyway, I put the mixture on the base and I made it as smouth as possible.

It kinda looks like a Canadian moose turt now!

Then, with a old brush, I make the ground uneven again.

With another old brush, a flat one, I make it slightly even again.

This is what I get after a bit of gardening

Now to put in some green...
Grass tufts, static grass and some nature scatter. I'm planning some jungle plants (few) but I have to search for them in one of my perfectly organized storage boxes....

I did some spilling, but no worries, It's water based and can be removed easily.
Here's a close up from what I got so far.

Not really a update, but I just wanted to show you guys what the plans are for the Bell 47D M*A*S*H heli.
The base as shown in previous update, had dried, and I added earth pigments and applied setting solution.
Now it has to dry again.

Just for the fun of it I dry fitted some jungle foliage.
Made these out of small plastic aquarium plants.

I want to make a jungle look at the back of this little dio, so I'll add some different kind of grass/bush. Going shopping this weekend!
At the edge of the jungle are some sandbags and medical suplies planed, with the chopper pilot sitting against it.
Maybe a sign or two, that depends of the space...

Here's a pic to show the foliage...

I just finished reading through your thread Frans.
It's the best moose turd I have ever seen!

I've seen some winners too.
There is just the right amount of brown stuff of unknown origin, green leafy things of questionable substance, and not the slightest bit of steam.

This is again, a fine piece of Fransinated modelling. Top drawer buddy. MASH is one of my all time favourite TV shows. I'm glad that you did this. It is extremely well done.

Update #9

Thanks for all nice comments fellas! It makes me a happy modeller!

This is going to be my second last update before the reveal.
The chopper is finished, and just finished the display for it.
The only thing remaining is one figure, and that is hopefully going to be delivered next week.

So on to the base.

Added sandbags, for I wanted it to look like a firebase.
Made the sandbags out of milliput. As most people knows how to make them, I thought at leaving those pictures out.
But for as this is a modelling forum for all kind of modellers with and without experience, I going to post them anyway.
Here's a quick how to

First up: mixing the milliput.

Then making nice sausages with a diameter of 6mm.

Then cut them in 1cm even pieces.

Making them a bit square between my fingers.

And putting them together. No worries for the differend shapes, for that makes it natural looking

With a blade I scribe a seem in the bags, and with an old piece of cotton I press a "canvas" patern in the bags.

After a black primer I painted them canvas.

Gave it a black wash,

After drying and remove the excess black wash, I highlighted the bags with drybrushing. And done!

Now... remember the plants? I put some small plants on the dio, but I wanted more...

So after a quick trip to the local pet shop, I bought some plastic aquarium plants.
I wanted this dio to look more like a firebase ate the edge of a jungle... Of course, these plastic plants are painted to get rid of the plastic look.

And for the fun of it, I added a big plant...

Printed out some medical supply boxes and folded them.

And this is the finished display...

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE!

And your sandbags are excellent and more detailed than my Milliput ones on my Panzer build...? Though to be fair mine are tiny 1/76.....

Excellent demonstration for the followers and forum members, plants are a good find too.... Just picturing the shopkeepers face right now and grinning to myself..

I take my hat off to you sir, truly a marvel to watch you create some stunning scenes..

Those medical supply boxes I bought a long time ago for my Doge WC 54...
But before cutting them out., I scanned them in my computer as a image on the right scale, so I have now an unlimited supply of boxes.

I print them out on thick paper.

Now go mop that floor!

The sand bags look great- and are cheaper than buying the Tamiya ones.

the use of aquarium plants is smart also
