I am gonna move on and come back to the steering wheel, it is consuming too much time
There are lots of other things to mess around with and make still
I bought a Fujimi 427 Cobra kit, hoping to be able to copy the windscreen

This is a 4W laser and Matthew has cut 1/2 mm plywood with it, ‘cause it use to be his!!
It is all in the settings, speed, # of passes and not having an idiot at the controls .

have you tried a small fan to blow the smoke away while it's cutting ?
Will it cut styrene cleanly ? .... thinking of Minart and their composite wheels.

Yes a fan and a vacuum/paint booth extractor planned for when I test cutting leather
Wife is off to Victoria for the next weekend, so perfect time to test leather then
Those hybrids look cool, spent too much time surfing them

Oh and cutting styrene: word on the forums is it burns and melts, but I will give it a try and see if there is a setting that works.
Styrene fumes are rather toxic, so back to the fan and vac idea

She has been primed in Tamiya white and a layer of Mr Metal Color Aluminum layed down.
The original a/c Cobras were an aluminum body shell.

Then a test bit of styrene handled the same way was tested with two blues.
Tamiya clear blue on left and Alclad hot metal blue on right

Then I found some Tamiya LP Mica Blue and did a little square

Probably going Tamiya clear blue, using hot metal blue on a Datsun pickup that is coming and the mica blue on that 427 racer cobra
Back into the cupboard to cure

I do like what you are doing with the painting. Be careful with fumes. Just treat it like rosewood and work accordingly

Just to clarify, I cut 1/2" plywood with my 80W laser. I only ever did 1/8" ply with the 4W.

It wouldn't be terribly difficult to change the diode out for a stronger one, there just aren't that many stronger options that would fit. Then you have an issue with keeping it cool. This desktop cutter/engraver isn't really meant for anything other than this class of laser diode. Really the only viable options are just fine-tuning the settings to find the best setup for the material needing to be burned. I always intended to spend the time to classify each material with the optimal settings for marking, engraving, and cutting. I just never found the time.

First two coats of Tamiya clear blue down over the aluminum.
Dry fitting the chassis+engine+Cockpit+body and testing rear wheel gap and alignment

I was worried about the brown interior and the blue...not anymore

The color is amazing, but if you put another layer of clear you might get a better finish. You could try polishing the topcoat, but I would be afraid that you would get variations on the color.

Thank you everyone

Lots of dust specks and such in the paint, but the Blue came out as I wanted

Now I am doing front and rear suspension and trying to get level alignment
Using the moto jig for the first time, just modified a bit to let the frame sit flat and brass rods for reference

Hopefully this lets all four wheels sit even and flat. Lots of missing parts in the suspensions, so little bits added here and there.

Looks great and I do remember doing this when I RC raced cars and of course on full size cars. Sure you do not have some Engineer in you??

The jig has sat for over a year on my other desk....figured it was time to try it out
I would love to say I have engineer in me (my family has two) but my math skills are poor to non existent.
I cringe when I see the kids doing their calculus homework

One of my weekend goals was to get her up on her wheels

There are no attachments with these spoked mags, so I had to make my own.
Some poly caps, threaded brass rod and tapped brass nuts. Stupidly hard way to make something but then....

Ways to go to get all the details done, but the wheels, stance and presence looks good so far

I had a nap this afternoon, so am wide awake at near midnight...might as well model.
I have not forgotten this build.
I am STILL awaiting the 427 kit do I might copy the needed missing parts.
But since mid January the kit hasn’t shipped from Japan. I think this is BS. Just sent a nasty message to the seller.
Anyhow, here the build sits in dry dock

I gave up on a Japan kit and bought the 427 at LHS a while back

The windshield frame is what I am after to copy.
BUT, the Fujimi kit us much wider than this AMT, so nope that doesn’t help

I am going to have to scratch one out from either styrene or brass and maybe vacuform the glass
I think I will 2k clear the body to protect the blue while making the windscreen
Did some clean up sanding and tried to improve the clear blue base...got more dust in it

I switched the rubber tires from that new kit for this blue one
Slightly less aggressive tread and sidewall height to make the A/C 289 look more appropriate.
Fatter tires will look better with the 427

The windshield frame is a clunky gross thing...I will probably have re-make it for both!

So I made two windscreens
First a styrene one...I suck at clean styrene bending. Matthew thinks this one is too tall

So a brass one soldered to the copper base ..couple mm’s shorter and 45* angled

More finishing required

Huh you guys surprise me

I hate the styrene one.
The styrene has a slight twist at the passenger corner, is too tall and the top part is too long
It is hard to get smooth bends in the styrene, the metal is way easier to bend

If you think the brass one is out of scale, look at the kit ones

The 1:1 pic...delicate, but still thickish

I will work them both up a bit more and see who comes out on top
It will be easier to vacuform the acrylic glass to the metal frame than the plastic, so that is another plus there

It is like 35 degrees C here and hot even with A/c on

I got the styrene windscreen shortened and angled..meh

Then I splash 2k’d the body...oh yeah

Also cleared the wood for the steering wheel
