Stunning job, worthy of a job with Meng producing the finished thing for Boxart.
What a clever chap you are

Yep - I think there was a fair chance of that which is probably why they abandoned it after testing the prototype

Tomcat's 1/35 Wasp Jeep - Build Part 7

Posted: Sun Sep 27, 2020 3:10 pm
by Tomcat64
I've had a couple of good sessions in the den this weekend and got the jeep just about done I think...

The flamethrower was finally installed and I added some of the extra piping seen in the reference photos by using Tamiya 0.5mm cable
Image

I also added a small valve-block thingy I saw in one of the photos by cutting & drilling out a cube of styrene and adding a sliver of round section to act as the tap
Image

Here's the flame projector from the other side
Image

The "scorched" patina on the bonnet has been built up using a combination of airbrushed black wash, dark oils and finally some fuel stain wash all blended together
Image

Down the back and the various tanks & pipes have been weathered using oils & fuel stains
Image

As well as extra piping being added here
Image

The driver's seat has been installed but the steering wheel will wait until the driver figure is painted & added
Image

I might do a little more fettling later but I think that's the jeep done
Image

The figures have been primed and will hopefully get some paint on them this week and I've got a simple base in mind to mount them all on.

Thanks as always for looking & leaving comments :cheers2:

Thanks mate - yep it certainly goes up to at least 11 on the bonkers scale of inventions...

You know that moment in the bar when everyone's had a few and someone says "ang on lads, I've got an idea..."

Tomcat's 1/35 Wasp Jeep - Build Part 8

Posted: Mon Oct 05, 2020 1:27 pm
by Tomcat64
Well I think we're nearly there...

I created a small vignette base using a piece of styrene sheet mounted on foamboard and then covered in Vallejo textured earth.
Image

Ok... I'll admit not the most exciting of photos, but I'll add some pigments & scrub and I think it'll do the job
Image

Most of this weekend's bench time has been spent working on the figures. Mainly Vallejo model colour in a variety of shades & mixes I can't remember. As usual there's a couple of the faces I'm not 100% happy with but any attempt to "fix" them will result in nausing them up so I think I'm leaving them as they are, with the exception of adding some pigments around their boots to dust them up a bit. Although that helmet looks a bit bright so I might revisit that!
Image

All being well I should have this finished this week if I get a couple of evening sessions in :)

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

It's looking great!

A weekend's work on four figures! OMG they look great! I've been considering making it a rule to at least have a go at the figures if they're included in a kit and haven't even made it that far yet.

Figures can be a little daunting for sure, Joe but give it a go as they can bring a subject to life and give some context too. Treat uniforms the same way you would soft stowage. Faces just need time and practice - oh and swearing... lots and lots of swearing :)

So a productive half-hour after work tonight has seen this one done I think.

I'll dig out the grown up camera for some final photos later this week but here are a couple of quickies to show how it turned out.

The vignette looks great! It adds a lot along with the figures. The jeep is amazingly done. Great job all around!

Thanks for the advice on figure painting. I definitely have the cursing part down. I just need to nut up and give it a go. I'll never get any better if I never try to do it. What kind of paints do you use for the faces?

Very well done Neil! I think this is a great subject. I really like the extra effort you applied to the details, and the figures finish it out perfectly.

Thanks Joe! After experimenting with a few options I've settled on the Flesh set by Andrea Color paints for the last few builds.
