Step 17 is assembling the gun travel lock. You're given the option of having it either in the stowed position or in the deployed position. I decided to do it in the deployed position. Starting with this step and then in steps 18 and 20 you're given a couple options for different pieces to use to model different versions of the jagdtiger. The option here is just for the clamp on the travel lock. I decided my model will be version E because that was the piece I cut off of the sprue. There really isn't any differences between the two pieces. One has a bar and the other has a rod from side to side.

Step 18 is attaching hull parts. I started by gluing the front of the fighting compartment in place. the fit is pretty good but there are a couple spots that will need some putty to fill in some gaps. There's a lifting bracket for the mantlet that has an ejector pin mark on one side that needs to be removed before gluing it in place. It's so feint that I almost missed it. There are also some tools called out to be mounted in this step which again, I'll paint off the model and install later. I didn't glue the mantlet in place yet so that I can dismantle the hull if I decide to paint the interior. The option here is for the ring that goes on the end of the mantlet. One is smooth and the other has a ring on the face. There are some very small lifting hooks glued on in this step. I had one go flinging out of my tweezers only to find it later laying on my instruction sheet.

Step 19 is building the headlight and spare tracks. For the headlight, I should have glued the mounting plate to the hull and then glued on the light so that I could make sure it was straight and level. There are two ways to glue the spare tracks together, spare track A and spare track B. The only difference is that they make a mirror image of each other when mounted on the hull. I build these on the hull so that I could make sure that the track lined up with the lower hull bracket. I may drill out the tracks and insert a copper wire as the track pin later.

Step 20 is mounting more hull parts. I left off the front towing shackles so that I could remove the upper hull to paint the inside if I decide to do so. The option for step 20 is in which shovel to use. The difference between the two is in the bracket used to hold down the spade end of the shovel. I left the shovel off so that I could paint it separately.

Step 21 Attaches more tools which I will save for later and the fenders. I haven't decided exactly what I will do with them yet so I will save them for later.

Steps 22, 23 and 24 are assembling the rear hull. There are some extremely small lifting hooks glued on in step 23. I mean extremely small. Luckily I didn't lose any of them. Step 24 is gluing on the photo etch grill covers. One side has a smooth texture and the other has a rough woven texture. The rough side goes up. Also, the the anti-aircraft machine gun mount is attached.

Really sorry to read about your health problems mate. Best wishes for strong endurance and a speedy return to health.

The JT looks great, beautiful clean build. Those tracks look so good - just crying out to leave the fenders off - or at least cut them up to show the tracks off!

Thanks for the well wishes and for looking in everyone.

I sorted out what to do with the fenders but didn't execute it very well. I've never tried doing any kind of damage. I should have sanded the plastic thinner before trying to bend it. Over all it's ok but there are some spots where I need to figure out how to get the plastic thinner now that it's bent and in more fragile small pieces.

I also felt like spraying some paint so I put down the base coat on the tracks.

ETA: If you look at the tracks, other than the obvious links I left loose to take the tracks off, you can see some loose fitting joints. They won't be seen, especially after weathering, but it's something to be aware of and check for while the glue is setting up.

Looks pretty good. A new blade in your knife and a little shaving might be the best way to thin the edges down. Some good weathering will make them look great as well.

How many to go ?
Are you still able to get around, it isn't knocking your ability to walk ? Got a friend that happened too.

I was able to make some more progress with this today. There were a couple spots on the upper hull that needed a little sanding to fit better. I also decided to only paint the lower hull NATO black before starting on the camouflage. Then, I painted wheels and wheels and wheels and wheels. I screwed up a bit. After painting the inside of the mantlet and a little bit of the gun I glued the mantlet to the barrel. Later I realized that the mantlet couldn't be attached if I ever wanted to assemble this thing! Luckily, it came apart easily enough without messing anything up.

On another good note, I think I officially have a stash! I now have a Tamiya Suzuki Hayabusa that my wife and kids bought me years ago when I owned one, the RFM F13 Tiger, a Revell P-61 Black Widow that a friend's wife gave me for something to do while going thru chemo and the new Tamiya Easy Eight Sherman. Whoo Hoo!

Looking to be an impressive build! I look forwards to seeing the completed JagdTiger.

If its any consolation - its been even longer since I did any armour in earnest and now I struggle with the T34 tracks too..
Sorry about the health issues - I hope your chemo is as successful as the wifes was. - you'll soon be back to normal then!

I got a little more painting done today on the wheels. I solely based my choice on which camo scheme to go with on the wheels. The scheme I chose has a few colored wheels both on the inner and outer sets. I thought that looked nice and will give some depth and interest to the lower hull.

I decided to go with Tamiya's XF-88 Dark Yellow 2, XF-89 Dark Green 2 and XF-90 Red Brown 2. Supposedly these are a good match for German late war colors. The Red Brown really looks green in the pot but goes on almost a chocolate brown with a green tinge, at least over a NATO black base. I don't know if these are a true match for late war colors but it will at least look different than the Brummbar I just completed.

My oldest son has been building a AFV Churchill for the last 2 years. He loves Churchills for some reason. It's a nice model but he was in way over his head with this as a first model. He finally buckled down and finished it. Today I taught him as best I could to use an airbrush. He did a really good job. I think I'm going to work with him to do some color modulation and bring it to life.

Wheels looking good and colourful and once you run a filter over those colours it will tone them right down. Good choice I think.

Not really an update, but I couldn't resist seeing just what it would look like with the wheels on. On my Brummbar, I painted the wheels too lightly and overcompensated the other way with these. I think they'll still come out well after some oil paints are applied and weathering is completed.

Nothing wrong with going light on the base coats It gives you far more scope with weathering and washes without the tank getting too dark.

My mojo got a major boost today so I decided to get a little work done. Since what I had ready to work on was wheels, I worked on wheels. First off I added some highlights to the outside faces. I was originally going to do this with an airbrush and then decided to just use a brush and basically dirty paint thinner in each color mixed 50/50 with white, building up the effect slowly.

Next I added a filter with black-brown oil paint to both sides of the wheels. I'm not sure where this is headed but I wanted to add a base layer of grime. The wheel on the left doesn't have the filter and the one on the right does.

I've decided to go ahead and do some rolled steel texture, flame cut marks and weld beads. It's a little late to do it because I waffled too long deciding if I was going to do it or not. It will be my first time trying to doing this and I've messed it up a bit, but so far everything has been repairable. I'll post an update when I get a little further along

I have been progressing slowly. My last round of chemo was three weeks ago now and it messed up my blood counts, leaving me very weak and mentally a little wishy washy. I decided (a little late) that I wasn't going to cut any corners on this model so I added rolled armor texture, flame cut marks and weld beads (with help from our Uncle Night Shift.) It's my first time doing this so I've definitely learned and improved as I've gone along. I should have done this earlier so I've broken off a few pieces but nothing that I can't fix. I really like the effects and will continue with the techniques on future models. Here's a pic. If you look closely you can see all three things in this one picture.

Good to see your still in the fight and on your feet even if a little out of it, but I'm sure you will beat this.
Really like what you have achieved in the way of extra effects. I shall have to check this Uncle night shift out.

The extra detail work looks superb. The casting detail and weld seams look awesome. Well done for going the extra mile.
