Re: 1/16 Takom Pz.Kpfw.1 Ausf B (Panzer 1)

Good morning all

Hope you, you’re families and loved ones are keeping well in these weird and perilous times we live in.

So the weekend came and went in a haze, as all weekends do for some unexplained reason, known only to God and the Universes Timekeeper. The week drags through work, then spins by in a jiffy at weekend and along comes Monday morning again  .

Friday, as part of Mrs DW and Mr DW wanting to stay healthy and fit, we went for our routine daily ramble around our local area.
Mrs DW at 10 years younger, is fitter and walks a hell of a lot faster than this Arthritic Dinosaur, but the 3 or 4 miles we do, certainly blows the Cobwebs out of our brains. Working from home, it helps with our Mental Health and Wellbeing  .

I have lived in this area for a few years, and was married in 1999 at the Church that sits on the highest Hill in our area. The Church has a grave belonging to a William Coltman, VC, DCM and Bar and MM, the most decorated Non-Commissioned Officer of the First War. He was from this area. What a story and he survived WW1 and without picking up a rifle. Absolutely mindblowing.
Image
Some 500 yards from our house, is an area that has 31 Trees planted to commemorate the 31 Men and Women who gave their lives in all wars. Its called Coltman Wood. It’s a very quiet and reflective area, and very well set up. The trees are Hornbeams, and they have set up large Plaques around this area that describe each Year of the First World War, and specifically how it effected the local area. Very well done and poignant. We spent some time that morning reflecting and reading the moving tributes, before walking back home.
Image
I had an unusual one off session on Saturday afternoon in M/C, after a bit of Six Nations Rugby, and on top of my usual session on Sunday (I’ll elaborate on that later).

Mrs DW went out on Saturday, looking particularly well.
She’s lost weight (due to her Running every day, and following the NHS Couch to 5k programme), which has given her new vim and vigour  . She looked good. I laughed, because she was banking money from the sale of our old Ford Focus and some additional cash from a 5 year Legal contest, where she was hit from behind in a car whilst parked at Traffic Lights. I joked with her, “Was she coming back”? :jd:
You know, Money in hand, looking Glamorous, Old Begger at home, falling apart and hands covered in C/A and Model Paint……….. :eeek:
On her return, she came back with this little group of my favourite things. Trifle, Root Beer, Flowers and a Good Book. She’s a good woman
Image
Saturday, I decided to crack on with the tracks. Big Fingers and tiny tracks, what could go wrong  .
I had separated the 200 Track Links into Glass Tubs that formerly contained a particular favourite relish of mine. Kimchi.
Image
100 links in one Kimchi pot and a 100 in another. I thought the Glass Pots would be great storage, as they have screw top lids and so loss of Track Links by toppling them or ham-fisted moves would be minimised. The problem is, the odour of Kimchi lingers longer than envisaged. The smell after a week when I took the lids off, has left the Tracks quite pongy :o
I initially started to bore the connection holes out with a Pin Drill (as per Fruil tracks), but deduced that over 200 tracks was going to take up all weekend and more, just drilling them out. After drilling ten or 15 Track Links, I started to insert the supplied Takom Pins into said holes, to see if they would just “Wiggle” in.
Image
Image
Image

Image
Some wiggling and moving of Track Link, up and down facilitated entry of pin and after much cussing and swearing  . Some went straight in without resistance. Some took an eon to locate all the way through.
Image
Some snapped. I expected some to give way as thin plastic, but no problem really. Very few snapped and they only failed due to vigorous manipulation. Simple case of poking Pin Drill down hole to push Pin through and then poking in broken end. I did at first play a little TET into hole (especially on broken Pins), but the fit was pretty damn good.
The call out in instructions was 97 per side (this I have read is touch and go, as one builder had had to put in 98 Track Links on one side and 97 the other side). Anyway I have 6 spare Track Links and Pins. The numbers on cardboard are my notes on how many links were in each length constructed at that point.
Image
They look very good. I gave the Pins a rub with a Sander to take off any burrs from cutting them off Sprues. The Tracks once built articulate and bend beautifully and no pins are falling out, well done Takom.
I forgot to add an image of the built Tow Rope mentioned in last weeks post, so here it is.
Image
Then, this is a big THEN, things went seriously downhill.
Sunday, I had a several poor nights sleep due to pain from Osteoarthritis and nasty Ulcer on the back of my left leg, that I have had since July of last year, that had sealed up before Christmas, but broke out again.

Lack of sleep and pain equals poor judgement and poor planning and direction. I cocked up significantly.
Its not the end of the World or that, its not even serious, but to a perfectionist and bit of a OCD Nut, its really mucked me up on this build.
Having completed all of the Lower Hull, Running Gear and Tracks, then set them aside, the Instructions move on to the Upper Hull.

The Fenders and top of the Hull come as a super large piece of plastic (P35). Beautifully detailed and really nice moulding detail.
Section 12 of instructions, first call out is for part P45, no probs.
Next, bear in mind, still 1/16 scale, tiny pieces of plastic in the shape of two ovals (A27) with a clasp of some sort through them (A26). Seriously fiddly  . All my references were pretty sketchy, and the instructions even magnified were a bit hit and miss.
Image
Parts P27 & P31 (Crowbars), were easy to clean up of a Mould Seam Line and fit perfectly.
Image
I will explain that the Instruction book is A4 Landscape sized and, I tend to fold it in half along seam. So next section of build after 12 is of course 13 (under booklet and out of view), except, as I have folded page over, and am devoid of sleep and mind is not on job, I did not read on to Section 13 :wall: :wall: :wall: .
Rooky mistake, and a salutary reminder to beginners to read instructions thoroughly. I didn’t, that’s why I fecked up  .
Section 12 also has you build Lifting Jack, comprising of 9 parts. A beautiful and very detailed Jack.
Image
Image
I ploughed on putting the Jack together and then realised my mistake in horror in Section 13, when I realised that the Jack did not fit in to its prescribed area between parts E45 and a small recess in Fender. Not even close.

“£!%$^&*()?@“£!%$^&*()?@“£!%$^&*()?@! :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

I tried to take it apart gingerly but the Glue was curing faster and faster.
In a Nutshell, cocked up completely.
Best thing to do then is Stop!
Clean off tools, tidy up and come out of Man-Cave.
I stormed off for a walk on my own, and after 3 miles in brisk cold, returning to house and loving wife, I explained my conundrum and mistake.
We had a look on the Worldwide Web for spares. None. Luckily the parts required for Jack are all on one Sprue E.
I have contacted www.emodels.co.uk as a first resort and suppler of kit, who I buy most of if not all of my Modelling Kit off, and asked them for a contact at Takom for a E Sprue. Also contacted Takom direct, but have read they can be hit and miss on Customer Care.

A disappointing end to a weekend. Monday brought a more philosophical mindset, but still super sad at my mistake. Even at my age, one has to learn from mistakes and it was a classic rookie mistake.

We’ll see what a reach out to Modelling Brotherhood will return.

As always, best wishes to you all and stay safe and take care,
DW

Oh well we all stuff up at times. Can't just re apply tet to soften the parts up usually works good enough to pull the bits apart. Never the less it still looks marvelous and what a lovely wife you have.

I did try to moisten and lubricate with TET but the main section would not shift.
Reached out to suppliers and Gawd, I've spent enough with these people to warrant a little support.

Mrs. DW sounds like a real gem of a lady. It's good to hear that your town has honored those who gave so much for us all. It's good for our young ones to know of them. I'm lucky that my boys are interested in and know our family's, our nation's and our world's history regarding such things.

Sorry to hear of your difficulty with the model but It happens to us all if that helps any.

Pass along a thought from me the next time you're near the memorials in your town and stay safe and healthy.

    Hi Joe

Thank you for kind comments Joe, she is a good woman and I'm very blessed. I came out of M/C in such a rage, and straight away Mrs DW snatched the wind out of my sails and calmed my anger. She makes things steady in my up and down world.
I will next time in this wood, send a message to these brave Men and Women from our friends over the pond, who stood so gallantly with us.
I have reactivated my FB account (suspended in February 2020 just as Covid kicked off, to protect my Mental state), as I was contacted by a fellow Modeller that a quick message to Takom on their FB site, works quicker than email. We shall see :th:
Look after yourself and my very best wishes to you and family,

Neither did I Sir, but Lordy, their is a whole pile of 1/16 out there, governed only, in my view, by price

They really are a tad pricey.

      Morning all

Hope you and you’re families and Team are keeping very well and safe?

A short post this week as since the monumental c@%k-up with Lifting Jack, not had much of a MoJo in me for building progression.

Friday Bake, saw me indulging in a bit of Bread making, that have not done for some years. Came out very well, for a 500g Loaf.
      Image
      Image
Took some robust and heavy Security to stop person / person’s who shall not be named, devouring hot bread slathered with butter.

Saturday, was spent giggling with a present that I bought for Mrs DW some years ago at Christmas. We haven’t, for some reason, got around to actually playing with it, till Saturday. When box was opened and instructions read. It is one of those Mould Kits to replicate Baby Hands etc……
Seeing as we don't have Babies.........just have to have a bit of fun together
We thought, we would replicate our two hands entwined, yeah I know its soppy, but with Valentines Day next day, It seemed Romantic enough for me and Mrs DW.
      Image
We had to lay out chairs and a stool so we could get ourselves into a comfortable position to hold hands in a bucket of Goo.
You grease up both Hands and Wrist with Vaseline, and mix up Rubber Mix with Water (21C) and then place hands entwined into bucket, push down to bottom of bucket, then raise up a tad and hold position for 5 minutes, or until the sloppy Goo, solidifies.
With a very satisfying Slurp, you pull hands out, and mix up a solution of Plaster of Paris, which is poured into mould in 1/3rds and circulated around mould and bucket tapped vigorously to dispel Air Bubbles. The mould is then filled up to top and left either 5 hours or Overnight (which is what we did).
      Image
      Image
Sunday night, the Rubber is picked away gingerly with fingers and a supplied Wooden Pick and Brush,
      Image
The Entwined Hands in Plaster of Paris look like this.
      Image
Some further drying for a week in a Cupboard, and then the whole thing gets coated in PVA.
My little finger has an Air Bubble in Nail that will need some work, but as a Modeller with all the kit, this should not be a problem. We may A/B the whole thing in Bronze Paint after. I wish on hindsight, that I had inserted some metal Rods into Wrists as supports for cast. It weighs a quite hefty old lump. The detail is incredible from the pattern on Wedding Ring, to Veins and follicles on Skin.

Anyway, back to Panzer 1 kit. Bit of a low point to go into Man-Cave on Sunday, since last weeks calamitous episode :bash: , and find Bench as left.
I have contacted Takom via email and FB (Re-Activated account from over 2 years just to get a message through), and emailed www.emodels.co.uk. Emodels have passed me on to Bachmann Europe Plc, who are their suppliers. I have been on Bachmann Europe website this morning and filled out details  .
They need various proofs of payment and Bar-Codes and such. I have had a very nice email this morning, from the Spares Coordinator at Bachmann Europe, who unfortunately, did not have a Spare E Sprue, and are awaiting a shipment from Takom, so by the time my request is made, it will be months. Her only short term solution is if, and it’s a big if, somebody returns a kit.

I can only keep plugging away.
With my heart not in this kit now, I pootled a long cleaning up some parts from Sprue E, Shovel
      Image
I did complete the Front Lights and Horn assembly.
      Image
The Fire Extinguisher was glued and clamped together.
      Image
That I’m afraid is my some total of build this week.
I’m thinking of boxing this kit up and starting something else off, as I feel because of one botch-up, my heart and soul are not in it.
Probably better to put all of this away, and get something fresh out  .

      Thoughts Gents.

In the meantime, take care and stay safe,

Hmmmm - I'd hate to see this one consigned to the RTB pile - I'm looking forwards to seeing it completed. So:
      * Is there no way you can rework the jack to your satisfaction to progress the build??
      * Failing that - can you not skip that area and return to it later as and when a Sprue E is available??

        Hi Neil
Thanks for looking in and yes, very, very reluctant to add model to RTB pile.
        * To Re-Work Jack? I didn't think the Jack was that messed up, but looking on images it really is beyond redemption :bash: .
I did think of covering it with a Tarp (employing Paper Shaper Product Digger recommended), and allowing the "Tarp" to cover in such a way that Jack still there but obscured  That could work.
        * Carry on without Jack? Thats probably what I'm gonna do. I can't honestly stick this on pile and walk away as yet.
        Just as update:
A very wonderful lady at Baumann Europe Plc (UK Supplier of Takom and others), has been very kindly emailing me yesterday. Unfortunately, Baumann have just ordered from Japan a Container of imports, so have proverbially "Missed that ship". Next order could be sometime. On getting home last night, I immediately took some images of Bar-Code on Box and Baumann sticker, which she asked for, and emailed them to her. They now have all details to contact Takom to send another E Sprue.
Nicola at Baumann Europe Plc, you get a A-Star for Customer Service     .
        Cheers,

That is good news. Always hate to see a modeller struggle. Hopefully it will bring some mojo with it. Excellent stuff.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

At the price of £70 in the UK its certainly in the Ball-Park of most prices of newer 1/35 offerings. Its building up into a very impressive size even now. The size of a Abrams or Tiger must be daunting.

Top of the morning you Plastic builders, out in this weird and perplexing World.

Hope you’re all keeping Safe and Well?

I may have mentioned this at some point in the past, and probably not even in this Thread, but I bought Mrs DW a Model Tank for Christmas, ½ as a joke, which most thought on here would culminate in my Death or Divorce :jd:
        Well, it didn’t.
Mrs DW has been building a Lego representation of the Friends (American TV series), Café Studio set. She was bought this kit by her Sister, as she is an avid Friends buff. Having completed this Lego set, she felt the urge to move on to my present  .
I have supplied her with a pot of TET and an old Cutting Pad for her to start on the Meng M4A1 Sherman / Toons Tank.
        IT’S PINK
        Image
Well not all Pink  as you can see, It has Purple Rubber-Band Tracks.
        Image
        Nobody likes Rubber-Band Tracks but Purple Rubber-Band, my eyes, my eyes :o :o :o :o :o
I didn’t know what to say, I really have had my Flummox, Flummoxed. I mentioned to her that we would attempt an A/B session, yup!, in my M/C, for her to colour said model once built.
I asked her whether she wanted to weather said model…………………………?
“Can I use Glitter” was response :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: .
She actually wants to do a Build Thread……………………………What have I unleashed here.
No Baking this week, so moving swiftly on……………………

Anyhoo, back to my attempt at the 1/16 Panzer 1 Ausf B.
Bachmann’s Europe Plc have my details, and Sprue E re-order is now on their list and time will tell on outcome.
I have though taken advice from my fellow Modellers and will continue with build, so here is a bit more work from Saturday and Sunday.
I had assembled the Horn, and I was gonna Super Detail the said Horn by drilling out excess plastic from Louvres. I was, but, my Chuck on my Dremel will not hold a really small Drill-Bit. I have ordered a Chuck set in case I want to open out the louvres.
        Image
All of the Tools, Spade, Axe, Jack-Box etc, have been cleaned up off Sprue Points and Moulding Lines and then mounted on Cocktail Sticks with C/A, ready for individual Paint Jobs.
        Image
        Image
The Fender section could now be glued on top of Lower Hull, and it’s a damned good fit. The Front Head-Lamps Power Cables lined up perfectly with holes in Front Glacis, amazed.
        Image
        Image
I'm leaving one of the Front Headlamps with its cover on and one with cover off, just for effect.
I haven’t taken many images of the next part of build, apologies, but under Fenders were 12 approximately, on each side, sizeable Moulding Plugs sticking out in pairs under Fenders. Really poor on Takom’s part this.
I snipped them off at the base of moulding with Xacto Cutters, and then sanded off excess with a Dremel Mounted Sanding Band till smooth. This took some time, and was frustrating to say the least, but as under Fenders, nothing will be seen.
I added the Fire Extinguisher to its mount and glued in place.
        Image
With Fenders on and fitted, The Lower Hull has Wheel Assemblies either glued or held on with Blue-Tack to aid painting, and Track assembly completed.
This meant we can move on to Section 18 (I have missed out Section 17, which is the addition of Rear Fenders, which can wait a while). Section 18, is all Upper Subsections.
Takom, have supplied the brackets for opening all of the Hatches, but as no Interior is supplied so open Hatches is a bit pointless, me being OCD, I still add the opening Brackets, but in closed position.
        Image
        Image
So, a nice easy build with nothing to complicated. The fit of these Plates is spot on and no Warp or Gaps. Very nice Weld-Line along some edges that will look terrific when Pin-Washed.
        Image
        Image
Despite mentioning that no Interior available for this kit, I have left the Side Crew Hatch up a jar (may have something "Jamming" the Lid up so to speak i.e. Rags or something), just for variation, so will paint interior Hatch and Weather / Chip accordingly.
        Image
Only fiddly parts were three Lifting Hooks / Ties (Parts A20 x 3), in 1/35, they would have just been moulded on or feeding some part of the Carpet Monster if separate parts :bash: .
        Image
        Image
All in all, the Upper Substructure has gone together very well, with no real cussing and stress.
That I am afraid, is “All She Wrote” the esteemed Coen would say.
Take good care of yourselves and stay low to avoid the blows, and keep ducking and diving till this Pandemic gets put to its proverbial Grave  .

Love and Best wishes as always,

DW (& Mrs DW waiting in the wings so to speak, ready to pounce :boom: )

I haven't got much Glittery stuff in there. Its all Matts and War stuff.............: : : :

Strewth this thread has covered some ground since the last time I had chance to check in!!

Great progress with the baked goods & plaster art DW :)

And the Panzer is looking none too shabby either - I hope you get a solution with the jack but if the worst comes to it, then just leave it off and maybe scratch build some empty straps from styrene? Those pioneer tools were always liable to being lost in the field weren't they? Whatever you decide please carry on with the main build as it's been a load of fun so far :th:

As for sharing the man-cave then Mrs Tomcat is generally in the den with me while I'm sticking my thumbs together - she's dabbled with kits, but really enjoys figure painting more so you're not alone... although I'm a little panicky at the thought of a "Strictly come Dancing" glitterball Sherman...

Basically a very good product that you can mold paper, toughen and remove from it to paint then reattach. Work best on the thinner paper.

Morning all of you fellow Plastic Lovers (bit weird sounding that  ), and Kit Hoarders.

        Hope you’re very well?

Well, no baking this week, but have been making Korean Kimchi (Starting to sound like chap of the Fast Show).
Have always loved this stuff and supposedly very good for your gut and stomach due to its fermented status.
I know it doesn’t look like it from its appearance, but it’s a very complex taste, but it’s a taste you either love or hate, very Marmite I suppose. Personally, I love the stuff.
        Image
The Bleach is not part of the ingrediants  I made a double load of this on Sunday morning, and its basis is Napa Cabbage or Chinese Leaf Cabbage.
        Image
This is soaked in Kosher Salt for a good few hours and then washed and drained in cold water to remove all of the salt water.
The Paste is made up of shredded Carrots, Spring Onions (Scallions), 2” of Fresh Ginger, Garlic (a lot), Radish, Korean Chilli Flakes (these have a kick like a mule and get them via Amazon, and I love Chilli so put a goodly portion in it), Fish Paste / or Fish Sauce, Shaoxing Sherry.

This is then added and the whole thing mixed together. Its left overnight in Plastic Seal-Able Pots (Mrs DW says she can still smell the infernal stuff even when sealed  ), then placed in Fridge.

It ferments, and stews and gets really pongy over time but the taste gets better and better with time :boom: :boom: :boom: :boom: :boom: :boom: .

Sunday morning, saw me taking repose in M/C and cracked on with the Rear Sub-Structure.

The first thing was to attach 9 hinges to Rear Plate for Engine access plates. Couple of Hooks also added. Fiddly but its 1/16 size fiddly.
        Image
This gave me a chance to put all of the Rear Engine Deck Inspection Hatches in.
        Image
        Image
        Image
Section G was a 3 part assembly for the radio Ariel, which I haven’t attached as yet and left loose so can be fixed in position later on.
        Image
It was then on to 6 tiny tabs (even in 1/16 size, really tiddly), catches for the Engine Deck Inspection covers, and these were cut away from PE Sprue, and cleaned up with a File, before being attached with Jarvis Extra Thick C/A.
        Image
        Image
        Image
The last thing of that morning was to glue the two halves of the Exhaust together. This will be treated to a coat of Mr Hobby, Surfacer, 500 to give it some texture.
        Image
Sorry about shadows, this was then left to dry fully before a bit of work sanding joints down :th: .
I’m afraid that’s your lot for this week, bit slow on plastic progression.
