At the final stretch!

All but a few parts are glued on - the prop, the canopy parts, and the rear view mirror!
Once it has a day to set up it will be ready for gloss and decals!

By the way, this is a part. I lost it.



On the other hand the landing gear is done!





Here is the engine exhaust, the antenna, and a bit of bent wire to replace the missing micro-part.

Nice neat paint and build. Kit has some nice details and is looking sharp and replacing that part was very good. Well done.

Not too sure about these very old decals - they don't want to settle down at all. I don't know if they are too stiff (I'm working them with decal sol) or too old (can the glue die?). Also, my tail cross is a bit off from the decal. Not too bad over all but it may start bugging me.
I will be watching them but I have a bad feeling they will peal off. It's a good thing I have two more sets to use.

EDIT: I was right - they are gone. Just about fell off on their own.

Way too far gone. At least I have alternate decals to use and didn't go too far along with the kit's!

After a bit of touch up I will be using these decals. The only part I won't be changing is the underside where the blue extends down the fuselage toward the tail. Because.

Here is the start of the new decals. The tail crosses and fuselage stripes are the only two that go on before the smoke rings (because the rings are part of those decals).

First - the tail cross on. Did not set too smooth either and that should have had no trouble at all! This is while still wet and before the Micro Sol. It came out a bit better after that.





What are the chances this one fits over the stripe I painted and lines up correctly? I'll give you a hint -



Still drying and wrinkly. Will it set smooth? Ha.



After some careful alignment and a double dose of Micro Sol it still looks like crap.



Next up - thousands of smoke rings!

More decaling! Here is the layout for the smoke ring decals. They are set up on the sheet to work from the right wing tip across to the other wing then down the fuselage. I am going somewhat out of sequence so I can better judge the spacing I don't want to end up without enough room at the wing root! Also, I started with one of the tail surfaces just to see how things went in a small area.
They seem to be settling down pretty well on the flat surfaces but takes some care to get the leading edge decals to curl around to the underside.

You might need something stronger than Microsol. Ulimate do a series of different strength decal solutions that might help. VMS also do a decal solution that you actually soak the decal in before application, but I have never used that so can't comment.

The decals look good, but as digger said you might need something a little more firm handed to get them wrapped if microsol isn't up to it.

As well as the ones mentioned there also Walthers Solvaset & Daco Strong which I've used and had good results with.

Here is the right side wing done. Because I had to be smarter than the instructions by working from both ends to make sure the spacing worked out - the spacing didn't work out. It's off by a few millimeters from the root toward the wing tip so got a bit crowded.



After I finished it I took the advice given in two previous posts and tried out a new decal set. Solvaset is great stuff! It handles these decals better than the Micro Set or Sol!
The fuselage decals and the three port wing decals were all settled in with Solvaset.

The spacings look fine to my old eyes, and I'm guessing there was a degree of randomness on the real thing in any case.

Very nice result, glad the solver set worked out. I had forgotten that one and I shouldn't as it's in my drawer and gets used. Very difficult for me to get that....I ordered via Canada.

Decals can be a real challenge at times but looks like you've nailed it with Solvaset

What solution works with one set doesn't work with another, I've even had varying results with decals on the same sheet

Micro set/sol is my goto, then Mr Mark softer/setter then Solvaset.

Plugging away on the smoke rings! I am so glad I didn't try to airbrush these things! Also putting on any that either go over decals that have already set or don't go over any at all.







Upper surface almost done! Only this many to go! At least they aren't tiny stencils!

Yes, Solvaset is excellent. But be careful with it. It can melt down a decal in nothing flat. On quality decals like Caracal its not likely to. But lower quality...who knows. I always test it on a relatively meaningless decal first.

OK. I may end up posting my finished build shots while it's still wet but I am done! All that's left is to glue on the canopy and that is it for the building. I'll have to give it a dull coat after the decals have more time to dry to finish it off.

The last of the decals. Notice the decal on the tail? I was going along, following the numbers, and put on the "Veltro" decal. It's not a Veltro - it's a Folgore.
