Well that didn't go as planned   still wet the day after and this stuff normally dries in an hour or two....just breaks apart in your fingers.
The bag of sculptamold has been in a storage container for weeks and all the plaster had fell to the bottom of the bag  and I didn't give it a good mix before using it so just got a soggy mess
oh well  will try again soon :)

Nice Bentley Casper. You asked about bonnet hinges for the Airfix Bentley on Pascal's 35b thread. If you have not sourced them already, have a look at Dolls House suppliers who normally stock various sizes of scale piano hinges. Also look at Hobbys and Hobbies mail order on the web. HTH.

Nice work Casper! To me the key of a good build is to ensure the additional work being added to a kit looks as though it belongs and is better than what was provided. Well to me you have covered that in spades!

I'm curious and interested to see how your display turns out. As it sets, you sure have a good looker there my friend.

I cant believe I didn't shake the bag first   :wall: its been stored for months  I ended up with soggy toilet roll sticks
You may see me try different things and most wont work but its fun making a mess :D I have a couple of ideas for the base but I think the plaster one is a bit ambitious, I was going to build some sort of dry stone wall along the back. Its an idea I had for the VW shed find I'm doing but larger rocks, I will post a pic in the VW thread but I'm still undecided if it will be used or not and its still needs some colour, may do the washes tonight to see how it looks.

Hi Ben :) thank you, didn't go as planned but never mind  The car still has lots of stuff to do before its finished, the Hood and windscreen details will be left till last. I'm also looking at the spare engine covers I have from the second kit in the hope I can hinge them but on both kits the right hand covers have a bend in them that will need straightening out for it to sit right, will try and get a pic up later..

I wrapped some jute around the steering wheel but I think its a little oversize  I have some black cotton to try on the spare

On the second wheel I tried some rigging cotton that I had from a previous build, wrapped it around...and around then the spokes had some black coated copper wire wrapped around...and around  :o  took me ages  but I think the second wheel looks a little more convincing and I don't fancy doing that again in a hurry  just need a tiny knob for the shifter and try a little bees wax on the string to flatten it out a bit but it needs to dry because I gave it a wash with cold Tea just before the photo, should dry a bitter lighter

Thanks joe, every bit of detail adds interest :) just the shifter to add an end to and a bit of black gloss on top of the brass in the centre then scratch some off again.

This is your fault scott   I must be mad :?
I cant see me getting past the first wheel but do a bit here and a bit there in between and I may get one finished in a month
On a serious note it would take a little while to complete the first one let alone five :wtf: thats if I dont throw it at the wall first...
I had a quick look at my Bentley and those wheels probably wont come of willingly, they were fixed too well

anyway for a bit of fun and variation I decided to see how it goes but be warned this wont be pretty and I'm not expecting great results so bare with me, this could be a long one..... :)

The second Bentley kit I purchased was started and very badly done I might add. The builder used so much glue it took me one and a half hours just to get the parts apart and ready to start, I almost gave up when one of the wheels centres broke trying to take off the two brake hubs. It doesn't help that the plastic being so old has gone very hard, not brittle just really hard to drill. I can see me going through some drills doing these.

pic of the parts after disassembling them, now to clean them all up

I make that 28 spokes on the outer rim and 40 on the inner rim times by two  :? 136 holes per wheel x5 = to bloody many :o

I have done a couple of glue bomb re-builds off eBay like that
Tons of cement, half the sprue tree still on the part. You just wonder what the heck they were thinking.
Well yes I wish you good luck to re-spoke those, that is a more than a double number than I did and not much bigger of a hub to work with.
Forty two spokes...you are nuts :eeek:

For the judges, it was merely an open 'challenge' to spoke any wheel at any time; not a specific Bently wheel at this time
Does that sound legally mumbo jumbo enough to get me off....Scott free one might say ;)

No it doesn't, its still your fault  "sprue tree still on the part"
I used a punch to cut some 1mm styrene discs to add some meat to the thin hubs, drilling isn't going to be easy so a little more room will hopefully help.
The centre on the inner rim is bigger and I don't have a punch that size so I sharpened up the end of a 1/2" copper pipe and used that instead. took a few goes and a bit of filing but got there in the end.

      Image

also two smaller ones to fill the inner hole then slip a small drill through the centre.

 And I ended up stabbing myself in the palm with a sharp needle file. Everytime I use those things I hurt myself, I stabbed myself above the knee a couple of weeks ago and still have Iron filings under the skin to prove it, blooming hurts like hell
same with the inner rim centre, small disc first then the bigger one.

      Image

well I make that three and a half hours so far and I haven't done a spoke yet

got a couple of spokes in tonight just to see what it looks like, not pretty but you can see the difference between 0.7 stainless with 0.8 brass tube and 0.5mm brass wire with 0.6mm sleeves or collets what ever you call them cut in half. I did a couple of 0.7mm spokes earlier today and they are the same size as the plastic ones.
When I did the kit wheels I spent a couple or so hours cleaning the spokes up.

oops (edited, posted the same pic twice  )

not perfect but it gives an idea of what it looks like. will leave it at that for now in case I stab myself again  :)

The first few holes were drilled at 0.7mm so the 0.5mm brass rod was loose in the holes making it more difficult to position the spokes but I've past those holes now so I can start drilling with a 0.5 drill.

A quick check to see how things look and line up, its not brilliant but Its like scott said the more you do the better you get so I should have five wheels starting rubbish at one end and a perfect one at the other  and if I start do two spokes a day I should be done by this time next year
on a serious note I will be lucky to get past the first wheel :D

      :thumb1: Thanks scott
cant remember where I picked up the pin/drill vice but they are very cheap and come in handy, I don't use the twisty bit much to be honest.

I found another outer wheel rim in the parts box and the rear axle assembly from the kit that was started by the previous owner probably about 30 years ago, you can just see in the centre where the drive shaft from the motor goes and the metal axle.
I needed to make sure I had some spares before I carry on because if by a miracle I finish these wheels I will need to remove the other four I did from the model and that's going to tricky  Lets see how things slowly progress. I need to get more brass rod and some new 0.5 drills now so will come back to them later.

While I'm waiting for the 0.5mm brass rods I thought I would test my hinge idea on the spare starboard bonnet.
I cut all the brass pipe sections with a sharp blade rolling it gently until it cuts through, best to do it with a spare rod inserted as these ping everywhere and are hard to find once they hit the carpet. Starting at one end I set the first tube with thin extra strong superglue and inserted the 1mm rod allowing some extra at each end.
I then loaded up around 5 tubes and glued every other to the bonnet. It doesn't take long to reach the end and first impressions are good so will move on to the ones on the car hopefully without having any spills. The bonnets have been painted but will need a final clear coat.
still bits to add yet but will do those on the bonnets I'm using

That is a neat job. How will you secure the rod in there once its cut to length - a touch of superglue at each end??

Not entirely sure to be honest Neil  I was looking over it this morning. The centre rail is chromed plastic and there isnt much meat on the bone so to speak. I have to cut the grass now but will give it some thought. Any suggestions welcomed :thumb1:
I think I should stay with the spare part and work it out before doing the others, it will help me with fixing to the centre rail.

May I suggest cutting a narrow brass (or similar material) strip to the dimension of what is shown under the kit hinge (as seen in the last photo in your Thu Feb 25, 2021 4:47 pm post). That is what would fix the bonnet to the firewall and radiator as well as give the hinge strength. Then glue the first and last hinge parts to it (not to the bonnet). Then glue the other hinge parts alternating between the right and left bonnets. Then the unglued center rod will go through the right and left bonnet hinges as well as be the piece that holds the bonnets together and secures it to the brass strip on model.
On the table or recently completed:

perfect thanks :thumb1: will look at doing that in brass, it would look better and be stronger too. Do you mean having one central hinge. Didn't think of that

The one side it fixed pretty good but adding the right side is going to be more difficult and I'm not sure if it will hold. The right hand bonnet has a bow in the centre that needs straightening out so it can sit flat without tension or I think It will just pull off.
The joining edge wasn't sitting flat all the way along the brass tubes so some plastic had to be sanded off both ends to get it even
I ran the hot tap over the bonnet while bending and straightening out the kink, surprisingly it got most of it back to shape but I still see a slight twist on the front end. The plastic is very hard, its not brittle but could snap near the vents if i try too much. Looks better than it did.
