Blue being a darkish colour it is so easy to cover any pre shading. Looks good to me though.

true what you say about blue and had completed forgotten about that whilst doing it. Therefore, I didn't dilute it enough. Well oil paints it will be further along. Still looks good and it does show a bit more then in the pictures but enough to my taste.
Hope seing my progress helps you get your mojo back on your side ! Mine so much back that I'm even thinking of finishing my Javelin at the same time, that's been sitting on a shelf, waiting for decals, since the beginning of this project. Have a great week end my friend !

Hello everyone,
so this is going to be my last update before leaving on vacation next Monday as they shouldn't be much progress in the next few days with work and last minute preparations for the vacation. And also, being book all day on Sunday for the graduation of my 10 year old son for his black belt in karate. I'm saying it because I'm so proud of him and of all the work and perseverance he put in, especially in the last year. He will have to perform 17 different katas and participate in 3 rounds of combat. All that for an intense 3 hours process. Congratulations !:

So back to modeling. Last time was the painting of the main color. after letting the paint cure a few days, I masked everything up for the upcoming wood effect.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
Unfortunately, my mix of oil paint was again too thick. So after the gloss coat dried, I sanded it a bit and srayed again a gloss coat but this time with a bit of clear red in it.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
Not happy with it... really not the best wood effect I've done

But then, a bad luck happened when unmasking everything.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
:bash: :bash: :wall: :wall: Glued it back and will sand it and paint it again in time.

Propeller is done

Wheels were painted but the decals for the Palmer markings broke on me so I had to dry brush the markings.

Assembled and weathered

When working on the wheels, I was thinking if I would put already the petrol pump
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
But when studying it, and decided to wait for it, I realize they was a mistake in the instructions. It shows the same PE number parts showed a few pages before to use on the main body.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
When I saw it for the main body, I thought it didn't corresponded much to the drawing and was kind of out of it's place. But what the hell because I had lost one of the two ! But then, when seeing the mistake, I found the good one to put on the body and found by accident yesterday the lost part ;)

Speaking of decals, had a mishap with rudder. :wall: Was putting it on one side with microset/microsol with mix results. I then remembered that I had trouble with those products and WnW decals on my last kit, and that VMS worked pretty well (which are quite better in my opinion). So I switch to those. Unfortunately, using them in a short time after the microsol was may be too strong of reaction and I putted my finger on it by accident.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
This will be to have painted on to correct it.

Decals went on the top wing
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
With VMS this time.

Speaking of VMS, for those who would like to use them, it's a good idea to watch a video using them on his YouTube channel as says a few important pointers not written on the bottles. And, although it says you can use them with any sort of varnish on, it is better to have one. Because the solution will stain the paint, depending the brand. Yes the stain can be remove with a brush and water but if you are using acrylics....

I decided to try something new to weather the bottom of the top wing by using watercolor pencils. And it worked out pretty well ! You have lots of control over it only by using water and a brush. And it recreates, in my opinion, the soaked effect of stains on the linen.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
The effect was too strong on the top wing (being where I started first) so I just sprayed the color on top of it
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

SO that's it ! if if I have time at the bench it will be spent doing the decals of my Gloster Javelin. Can't wait to be on vacation!! Leaving for Barcelona with the kids for 2 weeks, then after a few days back here, we will leave the missus and me for a few days at the beach in Atlantic City   So a nice summer !

Take care everyone !
Francis

    Hello everyone !

yes this project is still alive and ongoing ! I realize by starting writing this update, my last post dates from 6 month ago...As I've mentioned in the Figure GB, I've developed lots of anxiety issues and panics attacks lately, on top of personal problems. Working hard on the anxiety/panic attacks, I was able to get back a bit into modeling, thanks to Figure GB :)

I have not touch this build for a while...may be end of July a bit. So I Had to get my head back into it a bit...took lots of notes on what has to be done. And, this is the stage I'm at before this update :
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Taking all those notes would helped me knowing what's next, specially with WnW kits where the instructions tend to go everywhere at once. But in the end, it did not have the effect I wanted ! I sat down procrastinating for hours... and when I finally got myself to start, I had a huge panic attack just because I was back to modeling... yes panic attacks are stupid like that ! and no control over it ! Well, I fought through it with all the new tools I have and was able to start for real. And once I started, I spent lots of time on it and I'm happy to show my progress.

First off, the last thing I had done before putting this kit aside was a bit of rigging on the inside of the top wing.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

    Engine and MG put on
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
we don't see it but their are sparks wire on the engine !! Worked for nothing on the details... that's the way it is for lots of the WnW...lots of details that don't really matter lots of time. That being said, I love my engine anyways.

To go ahead for me to progress, I had to varnish most of the parts of the plane. Decals were put on with mix results (more on that later)
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
On the subject of decals, you can see there's one on the underside that is really bad, and one or two others that have stain on it or broke. Not being my first WnW kit build, I realize that first off, their decals are becoming a bit old. Specially this kit being an older one. They don't react great on a Matt coat directly. And they don't like microsol/microset solutions, or the VMS one. They actually tend to stain them or discolor them. Tamiya's decal solution, not being as effective doesn't do that. Also realize it does not happen as much on a gloss coat.... I know, I know... Most of us do gloss coat before decals, but I don't when I don't have lots to put on. But all that being said, it's worth taking note of that for anyone for future WnW kits. And their big decals, are also quite fragile compare to other brands.

keeping on the subject of decals, in the last post, I think I had showed the problems I had with both decals going onto the rudder.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Before taking them off, I had to find a color match for the blue and red. Blue was quite easy to find being Tamiya's Flat blue. Tested a few reds
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
Finally find a mix of Tamiya's flat red and hull red was the one...except I kept adding paint until I got the mix right... so I was left with what was in the paint cup
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
Not a lot  ... but for a small piece !

So everything, including the blue paint, was removed from the rudder. All was paint all over again for this end result :
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
    Pretty happy with it !

Also did a bit of rigging... because there's a lot on that plane. I've shown earlier for the top wing, and you could also see in the pictures for the decals a bit of it done. A few holes, I've been drilled (not all of them are already as my previous WnW kit). Manage the brake one the struts in the process of handling the plane.. :wall: and the other one on the verge of breaking also :wall: ...let's say that part of the kit isn't the best. They are fragile, put on at the beginning of the build. And the plane needs lot of handling through the building process. And yes ! there's also rigging on the wheel structure

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Also worth mentioning, that I had lots of airbrush and compressor problems. So thanks to @digger303 for helping me sort all those out. And thanks to him especially for helping me through all my anxiety issues and personal problems. I,m he doesn't know it, and realize it, but he did helped greatly even being on the other side of the planet.

Hope to show a new progress by next weekend, as I think I'm back into the game now.

    Cheers everyone !
    Francis

    Hello !

first off, thank you everyone for the commentaries. These are certainly another boost for me to get back into it.

Still thinking about what I would do for weathering, and waiting for my clear coat to cure properly, I decided to study the riggings diagrams and give it a little go.

When looking at the real plane in a museum I visited last year, it gave me a great idea what could be done.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

The struts from my kit have replicated the anchor points. Ok, I have one that broke in the early stage of the build and I had to replicate the top the best I could and it doesn't have it. But well, it's only one and on top so it shouldn't be seen that much. My theory I was going to try was to cut a good length of wire, pass it troop the hole, make a loop in prevision of the rigging position and glue already the wire at the anchor point.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

The struts isn't glued in place yet.As it seems, for now to be working, I decided to move on to the other struts.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

And then, moved on to the diagonal one between each struts

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

When you look at the real things, you can see that sometimes, the same wire passes through several points. Thinking that it would be easier that way, less manipulation, less glue... I went ahead and tried it.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
You can see in the above picture, that the wire stats at the bottom of one strut, passes through the anchor point to go on at the other end of the wing (next picture) you can also see my ugly repair of the top cowl not fitting at all. and that it's still would need filling... but too late in my opinion at least.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
Above, the same wire as before, stretch at the other end of the wing. The wire was glued in place at the first anchor point and will be glued to the wing later.

All that, made everything quite easier and faster then my previous biplane. But will see if it comes back to haunt me when I put the top wing in place.

Have a great weekend everyone !
    Francis

Rigging and struts look great and the pre-rigging before you put the top wing on might be inspired. If it works it will make life a lot easier. I found when I did mine assembling the wings then adding the rigging I need 3 pairs of hands.

It's true it's quite an hard process. But with careful planning and quality CA glue it can be not so bad. I even find it relaxing

    Hello everyone,
hope you're all having a great weekend. Here it's a beautiful sunny winter day after nice snowfall last night. Finally finish the cold wave we had (-30 C during 3 days).
Quite a small update and you'll see why shortly.
Last time I had done most of the rigging that could be done before putting the top wing on. So, I moved on to weathering of the plane.
I always use mostly oil paints for that. I don't want to go this heavy this time. I wanted to fade a bit the blue color and change it a bit. So I put a small amount of mineral spirits on the surface, then dots of white and 2 different blue. I blended everything with a brush. And using a soft brush when the mineral spirit was dry, I blended everything again.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

The rudder being fully rigged, it was time to weather it also (a bit heavier) and glue it on the plane.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Now to the reason why it's a small update. The "big" step for me would have been to glue the struts on and then the top wing. So I first needed the glue the ailerons that had been painted separately being left on the sprue. So the ailerons have small tabs to insert in the wing. And that's the main place to glue it. From past experience, they hard to keep in place with only small attachements points. So when it was time to glue them, I realize the tabs to go in !! I thought did I use the top ones and glued the bottom ones on the top wing ?? Did I used the wrong parts ??...

Well, no to all those questions !! WnW had the brillant idea to put the underside of the ailerons showing on the top of the sprue !! Didn't realize it ! So I painted it upside down !
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Let's say that was another curve ball for this kit ! I was bit desperate of that...I could cut the tabs and try it to glue it in place and hope it holds in place and it glue in a clean way. Or I could, remove everything and try to paint the putted-roundel. But the problem with that solution, even I already matched closely the colors for the rudder, that time the different mix would be just beside the rest of the roundel. So even a small difference would show !
But thank god !! I have spare decals ! But still bummer to do it over again being close to the finish.

    Cheers everyone !
    Francis

Well it took only 5 minutes to put a new update !!  Just after finishing my post, I was about to do over the ailerons as mentioned. Cut the spare decals I have, then check to make sure they are the right size...well it's now the same damn roundel !! The exterior color is white...

    Showing barely.
    Damn !
No choice to try to make a mask myself, then paint the roundels.

He said it first , but I'll say it again the fading technique works really well.
I suspect the trick is not to apply too much white so it blends easily. I shall have to remember this one and maybe try it out on my cannon.

It's the pits when horrible little gremlins interfere with the build process. It's a real shame because it looks so good. Pity you can't just flip them over to the other wing.

Nicely restrained oil works for weathering the paintwork. Its amazing how just the smallest amount can create such texture :th:

I suspect the trick is not to apply too much white so it blends easily. I shall have to remember this one and maybe try it out on my cannon.

It's the pits when horrible little gremlins interfere with the build process. It's a real shame because it looks so good. Pity you can't just flip them over to the other wing.

Yes that's about it. I tackle one section at a time. I take with a flat brush with mineral spirit on it that a wipe a bit in a paper tissue before. I put it all over the surface. Then the dots. Let the most of the mineral spirit evaporate. Then I blend it in it with a brush that is dry. If needed I use mineral spirit again. I let dry for may be an hour. Then I blend everything again using a really soft brush

The guys already said it but that's great work on the weathering & fading.

Hope you manage to get the ailerons sorted out :th:

    Hello everyone,

hope everyone doing good. I've not been much on the forum since my last post (almost a month ago). Mostly because being busy with other things.
And also, not long ago we've been it by 2 back to back snow storms, one being the biggest since of this century. Let's say, even being use to it, it changes a bit of the usual. 110 cm in 2 storms (that's around 44 inches) with gusting winds of 100 km\h on the second storm. After the second storm, I could not go outside through the front door. They was snow all the way to the top of my car. Just to give you an idea, my dog is at the height of the roof of my shed

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

so I'll have some catching up on everyone's posts afterwards.

Back to the ailerons... I had painted them upside down. Painted the good side this time. Made masks to paint the roundels. Was happy with the result of the color match being so close to the decals...but now you can call me stupid ! :wall: :wall: :bash: :bash:

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

What the hell ?!?! Have to start them over... again !! I decided to put them aside and get back to it when the top wing would be attached.

All the struts where glued in place and they are quite fiddly.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Carefully, glued one strut at a time in the holes.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

The fit is really clumsy and not solid at all. I'll have to be careful handling the plane for the final phases. And the alignement of the wings wasn't good at all. I sat the plane on the box vertically to help a bit but still not good. May the rigging will help.

So that's it for now. Feel free to comment or criticize

    Have a great weekend
    Francis

Don't venture in here too much, the aircraft stuff, but just read through your build thread and WOW, just wow!!
What a build, and the detail is pretty amazing (like the rigging, and colors for wood, the wicker, etc.!! Crazy) especially with how small (most of) the parts are!

Good to see a big up date friend.
The wing looks good from the angle I can see, but I know what you mean about attaching all the supports, keeping them at the right angle then attaching the wing all with only one pair of hands. I know at one point I felt like tossing it as far away as I could, do you know that feeling that seems to come from down deep and rises up and the only way to get some balance back within yourself is to get rid of the problem and throw it as far as you can.
Despite my feelings and my build you are powering towards a really nice aircraft. I can see it with what you have achieved so far and your so close to finishing....once those pesky ailerons are sorted :thumb1:

    Hello everyone,

first of all thank you for all the comments. Quick update as I have started the rigging. Going quite better then I expected.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

But stumble on a major issue... They are 4 struts attached to the inside structure (molded that way). And it made them always in the way during the build. And are quite fragile. So one was broken early on, and was putted asde....but can't find it anymore ! And saw it yesterday...: So stop the progress for today.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Let's hope I find it. Won't be easy to recreate if I don't... and don't remember the color I used for the wood effet

Remixing colours is a nightmare for me, they only have to be a little off and it shows.
Marvellous win though finding a missing part and the rigging is coming along a treat.

Rigging looks excellent. Don't get too stressed about matching the strut colour if you have to - it wasn't unknown for machines to suffer strut damage during combat and have them replaced either with new ones or from another aircraft.

      Hello everyone !

time for a quick update !

First, remember the big snow storm I mentioned in my previous post ? Being the biggest for us for the century. Montreal is one of the big city that gets the most snow in the world. Just to give you an idea, is a picture of one of the six snow depots in the city

Image1510904-dix-appareils-loues-permettront-lancer by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Just amazing even to me who's use to snow.

      Back to modeling now,

Remember also the lost strut ? Well found it the garbage bin. Glued it back and it helped to correct the alignement problem I had with both wings.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Still on rigging... 3 small pieces needed my attention. First one seems an impossible task !

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

      and it goes there :

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

So a little calculation was needed to make sure it align right. Triangle resolution (don't know the English word) and taken in account a 15% stretching the wires support. Not so bad result (excess still needs to be trim off)

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

      Other little pieces :

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Other then that, all the rigging is finish expect for the connection of the flaps (more on that later) and the wheels structures.

Yes the flaps ! So after painted them upside down and having to remove the decals, and then inverting the white and blue on the roundels, I went back at them. Painting went well, added a bit of black to the flat blue. But it's still off a bit from the decals

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

So, I'll think a bit if darken them more by spraying them again or using filters... or leave it as is...the weekend will help me think.

I CAN SEE THE FINISH LINE !!! Because after all what I mentioned, I have a bit more weathering to do on the sides, under the bottom wing, and bottom of the plane including oil splashes from the engine. As I mentioned to my friend @digger303 just pushing through it with all that as happen to me the last year and the major anxiety issues have been having, it makes me quite happy to be almost finish.

      Have a great weekend !
      Francis

      Hello everyone !

A real quick update as the finish line is getting closer and closer.

All the rigging is done (except for the flaps) and wheels are attached (including rigging also :wall: )

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Weathering as begun under the wing

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Unfortunately, I realize a problem too late. The fit for the wheels' structure was really bad ! and 2 days after gluing it in place I Realize it had made the plane at an angle.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Don't know if I'll be able to fix it. I've putting a bit of weight on it to see if it could sit in place but I doubt it.

But still, I love the look of the scheme. Almost done !

      Have a great weekend !
      Francis

I can't really spot where the problem is with the undercarriage it's almost like one leg is shorter, but that can't be. Never the less the paint looks good and the rigging has worked well.

      Hello everyone !

So this should be my next to last update on this project !

Weathering stage is finish. Was able to correct a bit the alignment by leaving a weight on the wing.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Weathering on the sides was done only with watercolor pencils (except the engine cowl). the rest was done using oil colors. I'm happy with my first attempt at castor oil engine spills. Used a mix of red, sepia, burnt Sienna and raw umber.

As I said, I put a weight on the wing. You can see the difference in the 2 pictures
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

things left to do : 4 wires to attached (2 on each flaps), assembling and painting a little device called a Rotherham petrol pump, wire in front of the wheels that got off and finally the propeller (already painted but needs weathering) and the spinner on top of it.

Have a great weekend everyone !
      Francis

With those engines continually pumping out oil it did tend to get everywhere.
The mechanics must have hated it.

Like all groundcrew they felt they 'owned' the aircraft and only leant it to the pilot who frequently broke it or got it dirty!

      Hello everyone !

finally ! the last update !!!
Months and months after the finish of my friend @digger303 Camel ! I have to go faster !

Propeller and spinner on. Propeller was already painted. Just weathered a bit with pencils... same with the spinner.

Thinny thinny thing left... the petrol pump that goes on the wheels struts.

Realize after gluing it in place that it was a bit too high because the small propeller would hit the structure of the plane ! well too late... just another mishaps through lots in this build.

So that's it !!! Most of the weathering was done with watercolor pencils, method I loved and tried more for the first time in this build. And rest with oil paint, easiest and cheapest way I think as you can recreate all colors and all textures instead of paying for enamel products that go bad after a while.

Finish picture will show in another post shortly ! Thanks to @digger303 for lots and lots of support. And to you all for all the comments.
      Francis

Can certainly see where WNW is much closer to the real thing than my old Academy kit.
Great work, love that blue. :th: :th:
