Update ?. Paint

Well here it is. I used Italeri paints, I've found them not particularly friendly through the airbrush, they're great for hand painting though.

So here it is painted, glossed and ready for decaling.

Last Update Before Final Reveal

Hey all, thought I better throw in a penultimate update before the final reveal, as I haven't been giving this one the attention it deserves. The painting and decaling have been done and there's only weathering to finish up.

I used Montex masks for the main canopy, they were on there for well over a month, with undercoat, paint, gloss coat and matt coat, it was a real heart in mouth moment for me. More than happy with the results, I haven't tried Eduard masks but I can recommend the Montex.

The decals were from Techmod. Thanks to UKscalemodelling and Opapapa I had warning of possible problems. I tried them on another kit with not so good results, but on the Ju88 I was better prepared and they went down beautifully.

And, just because I think it warrants it, a bit of a history lesson on the Finnish Swastika "Hakaristi". It originates from the good luck motif applied on the Thulin type D monoplane of the Swedish Count Eric von Rosen. In March of 1918 he arrived in Finland and donated his aeroplane to the Finnish 'White" forces. By General Carl G. E. Mannerheim's orders No. 26 of 18 March 1918, von Rosen's emblem was adopted as the national marking for Finnish Army Aircraft. The Swastika was ultramarine blue on a white disc, with size, location and shape being defined on 20 March 1934. Colour of serial numbers was black on olive green and light surfaces and olive green on black surfaces.

White discs were visible from a long distance. On 23 July 1940 it was ordered that the maximum diameter of the insignia would be 100cm to make aircraft less visible. By orders of 12 January 1944 the disc colour was changed from white to blue grey. This was applied on new aircraft with a colour similar to RLM 65. On 1 April 1945 the insignia was changed to white-blue-white roundel under Allied (especially Soviet) pressure.

Great looking bird! Good paint job. The Techmod-decals are great once you get them in position in one piece. I think that the blue colour is quite correct as well. Many kits that have finnish markings have the blue in the roundels too bright or light... or pale... sorry, don't know the correct word

btw. Finnish swastika still remains in the top left corner of the presidential flag and also in the centre of the airforce flag. I can imagine that it has raised an eyebrow or two amongst the people who doesn't know the history behind it. Even here in Finland.
