Thanks
And the tracks can out great imo
I only tested the mr metal paints on a scrap piece of styrene but this color is great
Paul uses this aswell on a variaty of things
But i just a few minutes ago brush painted some of the hydraulics with the chrome silver and it turns out better then when i use the airbrush it is almost like real metal
so i will be repainting all the light metal parts to give them another buffing and make them shine
But i will show the results in the next update and everything should be painted by then
Cheers Mark

Good day fellow modellers
I have a new update for my bulldozer
This time it is all about the painting and a start of the weathering
I started with the base color after i masked the windows
And that went pretty good
The airbrush clogged up just once and that is with vallejo
but i think i showed that already

then it was time for some metal paint
Image
i used mr metal chrome silver for all the hydraulic pistons as the need to be shiny but it leaves me with a question
As you can see the 2 pistons in the photo look different in color
Both are buffed at this point buy the small one on the left is brush painted
But this one looks a lot better so how did that happen ?

Then came the blade
it was first painted in the same color as the pistons but i thought it was to bright and the real thing is made from steel so i repainted it with mr metal stainless to make it a bit darker
Image
and now i'm happy with the color
so this baby is ready for some base color and a lot of chipping

Image
and here is how it turned out
My goal was to have just some paint left on there
So i used ak chipping fluid and let that dry for about 15 minutes
then i sprayed the base color and left that to dry for 30 min.
It was then chipped with water and an old brush

While that was drying i painted the heads of the pistons and the lights
Image

Image
so these are all the parts painted
I then used ak filter for dark yellow on it to darken the color a bit but that had very little result as it is very hard to see in a photo

So it was given a satin finish anf the last decals where applied
Just 1 on the outside
Image
Image
then i started chipping the entire vehicle
I had seen a picture of a real D9R and the USMC don't paint the real ones very often as it was a scratched and chipped on every single surface
But i like the look.of it and it breaks up the monotone color so i used vallejo model color :german camo black brown as a chipping color and applied it with a sponge all over the vehicle except the front part of the blade
I still need to do the chipping near the glass but i will use a brush for that as i don't want to paint the windows
And then she is ready for some wash and streaking
And ofcourse dust but i'm not sure if i will use pigments or the ak stuff for dust because i never used that
And a bit of rust on the exhaust
But that is all for next time as i will try to finish it by then

So thanks for watching and untill next time
Cheers Mark

Thanks Peppie
And like i sayed in the pm they work on all primers
I don't know what caused some parts to look better at the second try
Maybe because.there is a thicker layer of paint
So mr metal can be brush painted aswell but it is very thin
And i think they are great with much better results then the other metal paints i used before
So as long as you don't paint entire planes with them they should last a while and a lot cheaper then alclads but maybe alclad is better for some purposes

You are entering SMC too? NICE!
This model is competition worthy Mark.
It's a really tough competition, I agree with that.
Just start at the lowest class (like I do) and subscribe under militair vehicles.
All info can be found on there website.
And that blade looks brilliant buddy! !

Yep that is the idea
I never entered a competion before so i thought i want to try it once
And if i don't like it ,it is the first and last time
If i do like it i may do it more often
But i know of a few guys that are going there aswell ,they are all members of twenot and they don't really go for the standard level competion
I have the book :made in Holland by afv (modeller)
Almost all the guys in that book are present at smc
And if i compare myself to them :shifty:
The saying is don't bring a knife to a gun fight
Well this is bringing a rock to a tank battle
What they make is far beyond my skills
But thanks for.the comment
And i hope to enter as my work requires me yo be preseny in weekends i'm not sure if i will make it but i will take a week of vacation for it i think just to be sure
Cheers Mark

Mark, I decided on the alclad, for the reason I want to use it on airplanes. I chose the alclad because I heard people telling, you can't use maskingtape on Mr. Metal (it rips off) .
But I ordered some Mr. Metal also  (dark iron) to use on engines and stuff (no need for masking there).

Good luck with the alclad
I didn't have problems with the mr metal but i used after the basecolor so i didn't mask it and i don't know of ripping it from the model
But it is better for a large surface i think
Mr metal is used up fast as i noticed

hi guys
so after a while i have blown away the dust and continued the weatering and final assembly
so maybe those tubs of doom aren't such a bad idea
it will keep the dust of the model anyway

last time i did the decal and the chipping
so i whent on with the wash
Image
the wash i used is ak interactive oef and oif wash
this was used as a pin wash around all the raised details
i used 3 coats of it in all the air intakes to make them stand out a bit

Image
after the wash had dried i went on with streaking effects
this is simple to do and gives a very nice result
for this i used 2 colors
the first is ak's oef and oif streaking
this is applied with a small round brush on verious spots and all you need to do is make random streaks from the top to the bottom of a part
let it dry for a while ,about 20 minutes
then blend them down with some thinner and a small flat brush
i used a #2 brush

Image
this was repeated with ak's rust streaks
this was only done on a few places and they had chipping already
so when a bit of rain hits the vehicle some rust will be dragged with the water when it goes down the surface

once that was dry to the touch i started the final assembly
the lights where fitted with the clear parts and the rubber hoses for the hydraulics where glued in
a bit of a bummer was that the rubber tube provided in the kit is a few mm short so some hoses don't have the amount of slack they need
Image

and then i fitted all the parts i had left
so the beast is build
Image

Image

Image

Image
this is it so far
i still need to give it a matt coat and after that is dry a bit of grease on some pivot points
and finally dust
as you may see the door doesn't fit all that well this is because you would have to glue it onto the armor plate that it seals off
but i wanted to keep it opened so i can't close it completely

and that is all i have for now
i maybe get a base for it and applie some sand on there to get a dessert feel to it
so i hope you like it in it's weathered state and ofcourse all comments are welcome
untill next time
cheers Mark

Thanks John
I'm glad you like it
And i'm very happy with the result so far
It does need some dust and a oil/grease stain here and there
But the matt varnish needs to dry first and it will need a second coat too
I will go to a modelling club meeting next sunday and i hope to get a nice wooden base for it
Then i will add a bit of sand and she is really finished
Cheers Mark

hi guys
so the last update is here
i finished the bulldozer today
i am still thinking about a base though

but here it is
Image
there was not that many work left after the last update
the only things i have done was add a bit of rust on the exhaustpipe and a lot of dust

Image
the dust is done with mig productions gulf war sand
this is simply brushed on and the excess was blown off after

Image
the hoses in the back received some dust aswell
to get the brand new look covered and make it look like it has been in use a while

Image
the exhaust pipe was "painted" with old rust pigments mixed with Ultimate thinner
after that had dried i applied some standard rust pigment to finish the work

Image
the blade had some sand added aswell
for this i brushed on some mig pigment fixer on the raised edges and sprinkled on some pigment

and that is basicly all i have for now
once i figured out what i will do for a base i will a last update and a topic in the land gallary
and make some more photo's of the then finished project
so let me know what you think and untill next time
cheers Mark

Thanks Frans
And i am still playing with that thought
I do want to enter a competition but smc is the hardest armor competition we have
And a friend told me it was good enough but he entered many competutions in several countries
So he knows what he is talking about but at the same time he is a lot better in modelling then i am
But it will need a base before that time

hi guys
well this build is now finished
after being stored in one of my display cabinets a few months back i kind of forgot about it
altough the D9R was done it still needed a base
mainly because of the use of a lt of pigment wich can fall of and make the displaycabinet dirty (i don't like cleaning  )
but it was my plan to take this with me when i go to the upcoming SMC modelshow and competition this sunday
so i think a good base would be nice

so here is the last bit of progress

Image
the base is made up from 3 pieces of wood from the diy store wich i glued on top of eachother and then some staining to get a nice color
the sand is made from soil that was found in the garden ,this has a high amount of clay in it
this helps to get a better result when you press the tracks in it and it is not likely to sag back and become flat
the soil was mixed with a drop of light sand paint water and white glue
the paint had absolutly no result so i sprinkled a very fine gravel on it
that was sprayed with the airbrush and some vallejo pale sand (modelcolor range)
as you can see the mrkings from the tracks and the blade are very nicely defined in the sand

Image
a bit hard to see but my camera didn't want me to get any closer
i ap;lied a coat of pigment
for this i used mig productions gulf war sand wich should resemble the color of the iraqi dessert

Image
and then it was time to remove the masking tape
clean up the remains of the pigments and ofcourse put the bulldozer on there

and that is all i have
i will post the rest of the photo's in the gallery section
so this build is over  ,it was a very nice build with an excellent kit
the kit is a truely recommended kit and almost a must have for the armor builders who are looking for something different
so i hope you guys like the result and the thread
untill next time
cheers Mark
